REHOBOTH BEACH — Thousands of Special Olympics Delaware supporters plunged into a sub-40-degree Atlantic Ocean Sunday afternoon again raising hundreds of thousands of dollars for the organization. Fair weather smiled on the 23rd Annual Lewes Polar Bear Plunge as temperatures in the 50 degree-range and calm seas greeted enthusiastic polar bears. After a week with temperatures not much more than zero, the weekend's warm weather felt like nothing less than divine intervention.
Thirty minutes before the 1 p.m. dunk, a sea breeze kicked in quickly dropping the air temperature by nine degrees. That did little to quell the enthusiasm of people from all over Delaware who made downtown Rehoboth swell with summer-like crowds.
