Cutting Taxes In Maryland The Easy Way: Talking About It

MARYLAND GOV. Martin O’Malley (D) has been a prolific tax-raiser, having advocated or acceded to some 40 new or increased levies since taking office almost seven years ago. Those tax hikes have generated almost $10 billion, according to one conservative group’s estimate, which the governor has not tried to refute. They have helped pay for generous spending on public schools, higher education and the state’s transportation network and social programs.

Little surprise, perhaps, that in the race to succeed Mr. O’Malley, the pendulum has swung back toward tax cuts. In the context of an improving economy, that’s for the good; no doubt, plenty of Marylanders would appreciate keeping a greater share of their income. But candidates have an obligation to explain how they intend to offset any loss of revenue, especially since several of them also propose new spending.

Del. Heather R. Mizeur, the most liberal of the three Democratic contestants, has floated a soak-the-rich plan while simultaneously promising to cut personal income taxes for 90 percent of Maryland taxpayers. It’s not clear whether the math would work, but her program would do nothing to help the state’s already tepid climate for business. She also proposes huge spending on education, transportation and much else, with highly speculative means (such as legalizing and taxing marijuana) to pay for it all.

12 Dining Etiquette Rules Every Professional Should Know

Eating with someone in a professional context can be tricky. On the one hand, you're trying to get to know the person better, but on the other hand, you're worried about what your eating habits say about you.

The most important thing to remember, says career coach Barbara Pachter, is that you're not there for the food. You are there for business.

In her new book "The Essentials Of Business Etiquette," Pachter discusses the dining etiquette rules every professional needs to know:
1. The host should always be in charge.

Revolt Against Obama, Government Is Possible Says Expert

On Tuesday, Michael Cannon, Cato Institute’s Director of Health Policy Studies spoke to members of Congress that an armed revolt could occur against the federal government if things do not change.

Cannon testified that President Obama’s disregard of the Constitution and the lies concerning the implementation of Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) and its implications, and the consequences of Obama’s behavior, could lead to an armed revolt against the federal government.

Cannon stated that Obama’s actions were unprecedented by any president in acting to do as he pleases while Congress does nothing about it.

Three White College Students File Racial Discrimination Complaint Against Professor Over Lesson On Structural Racism

A Minnesota college has reprimanded a faculty member for creating a “hostile learning environment” by targeting “students based on their race and gender.” The faculty member is black; the complaining students are white.

When three white male students in Shannon Gibney’s mass communication class at Minneapolis Community and Technical College complained because she discussed structural racism in every class, Gibney invited the students to file a racial harassment complaint. The students took her up on the suggestion, according to The Raw Story.

“It was inappropriate for you to single out white male students in class,” Lois Bollman, the college’s vice president of academic affairs, wrote in a letter of reprimand to Gibney. “Your actions in [targeting] select students based on their race and gender caused them embarrassment and created a hostile learning environment. For that reason, I have determined that a reprimand is warranted.”

This isn’t the first time Gibney was criticized for going over the top in directing racially charged comments to people of color.

The Truth About Hate In America

The FBI has released its 2012 list of hate crime statistics, and much of the data clashes with the leftist narrative that America remains besieged by increasing amounts of anti-black racism and anti-Muslim bigotry. Yet the greater issue involves more than who is committing what crime against which entity covered by hate crime statutes. Hate crime statistics, and the law that prompts their collection, have promoted yet another expansion of federal power at the expense of states and localities.

Before getting into the numbers, the FBI explains that the Uniform Crime Reporting Program defines a hate crime “victim” not just as an individual, but as “a business, an institution, or society as a whole.” Moreover, a hate crime itself is defined as an offense “against a person or property motivated in whole or in part by an offender’s bias against a race, religion, disability, ethnic origin, or sexual orientation.” In 2012, there were there were 7,164 hate crimes. The “victim” breakdown reveals that 55.4 percent of those crimes are perpetrated against persons, 41.8 percent against property, and the remaining 2.8 percent against society at large.

NSA Collects 5 Billion Records A Day On Cellphones

The National Security Agency is gathering nearly 5 billion records a day on the whereabouts of cellphones around the world, according to top-secret documents and interviews with U.S. intelligence officials, enabling the agency to track the movements of individuals — and map their relationships — in ways that would have been previously unimaginable.

The records feed a vast database that stores information about the locations of at least hundreds of millions of devices, according to the officials and the documents, which were provided by former NSA contractor Edward Snowden. New projects created to analyze that data have provided the intelligence community with what amounts to a mass surveillance tool.

The NSA does not target Americans’ location data by design, but the agency acquires a substantial amount of information on the whereabouts of domestic cellphones “incidentally,” a legal term that connotes a foreseeable but not deliberate result.

Banksters Could Be Forced To Pay Billions For Crashing The Economy

But, these fees are just a small fraction of the price that American taxpayers paid for the economic collapse. So far, the too-big-to-fail banks have forked out about $80 billion dollars in legal fees related to the crisis, and the ratings agencies predict that the banksters will be on the hook for another 50 to 100 billion. Although that sounds like a lot, it's simply a drop in the bucket compared to the $6 trillion dollars that their gambling cost our economy. And, many of these settlements were so-called "no-admit-no-deny" agreements that did not even require the banksters to admit to their crimes. To make matters even worse, many of these settlements could be written off of banks' taxes, which means that the actual amount that banksters are responsible for is even less than that $80 billion. The vast majority of the cost of the last economic collapse fell to the taxpayers, and the too-big-to-fail banks have been able to consider their fees as just another cost of doing business. And, most of our lawmakers aren't doing much to prevent the next crash, let alone hold the banksters accountable for the last one. As Senator Elizabeth Warren says, the system is rigged, and Americans are fed up with the banking oligopoly. If we want any chance at stopping the next economic meltdown, we must break up the banks, and start throwing the banksters in jail for their crimes.

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown Target Of Mounting Criticism Over Health Care

WOODLAWN, Md. —There's a new push in Washington for heads to roll over the new health care law, so what about Maryland?

Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown was in charge of the rollout of health care reform in Maryland and happy to talk about it, apparently until now, when many want to know why has this been so rocky, WBAL-TV 11 News I-Team lead investigative reporter Jayne Miller said.

There were smiles all around in April 2011 when Gov. Martin O'Malley, flanked by the state's top Democrats, signed the law creating a whole new agency to set up the state's new health insurance exchange. It was the result of the Affordable Care Act.

"Our nation has lost his greatest son," he continued. "Our people have lost their father."

Vegas Lady Liberty Sculptor Sues USPS Two Years After It Used The Wrong Image On Stamp

Two years ago the United States Postal Service admitted it made a huge mistake by issuing a “Forever” stamp featuring the Statue of Liberty. Not that Lady Liberty isn’t the perfect subject for a stamp, but because the agency used an image of a replica sculpture from a Las Vegas Casino. Back then it was all “shrug, everyone likes it so we’ll keep it.” Here is where what goes around appears to be coming around.

When the USPS realized it wasn’t the original Lady in New York Harbor, it said it would “reexamine” its “processes” so it wouldn’t happen again. But it also figured hey, this is going well and is so popular that the USPS “would have selected this photograph anyway.”

SUSPECTS ARRESTED IN PRINCESS ANNE MURDER

(Princess Anne, MD) –Maryland State Police criminal investigators arrested two suspects today in the murder of Adrian Lurele Marshall in Princess Anne.

Those arrested are identified as Brandon Michael Early, 17, of the 500 block of Random Drive in Baltimore and Cory Hamilton, 28, of the 400 block of Liberty Street in Salisbury, Maryland. Both men are charged with first and second degree murder, and robbery.

The victim, identified as Adrian Lurele Marshall, 35, of the 11,000 block of Greenwood School Road in Princess Anne, Maryland was found dead in his home on Thanksgiving morning. The autopsy determined Marshall died from multiple gunshot wounds. The manner of his death was ruled a homicide.

Early was arrested at his home in Baltimore without incident at 2:00pm this afternoon. Hamilton was arrested at his place of employment in Salisbury without incident at 11:00 a.m this morning. Both men are awaiting an appearance before the Somerset County District Court Commissioner.

At approximately 1:00 a.m. on the morning of Thursday, November 28, 2013, state troopers responded to Marshall’s residence after receiving a 911 call, reporting a possible shooting. Upon their arrival, Marshall was found lying in the kitchen area of his duplex style residence.

Detectives from the Maryland State Police Homicide Unit responded to the scene and initiated an investigation. Continuing assistance was provided by state police investigators from the Criminal Enforcement Division from Berlin, Salisbury and Princess Anne, the Gang Enforcement Unit, the Gun Enforcement Unit, and the State Apprehension Team. Crime scene technicians from the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division responded to gather and process evidence at the scene. The Somerset County State’s Attorney also responded.

Investigators continue to interview witnesses and urge anyone with information to call Crime Solvers of the Lower Eastern Shore at 410-548-1776. All callers will remain anonymous.

No More Class Action Lawsuits Against Your Employer

Companies can force employees to sign arbitration agreements waiving all rights to class-action lawsuits. A federal appeals court has overturned a decision by the National Labor Relations Board. It's a big win for businesses worried about lawsuits over workplace grievances like unpaid overtime. The case considered a policy in which Texas-based homebuilding DR Horton required employees to sign agreements to resolve any workplace disputes in individual arbitration proceedings. The appeals court says the agreements are fine, but they must clarify that employees can still file unfair labor charges with the NLRB.

Challenging Transition To Adulthood For Marylanders With Disabilities

In Maryland, young adults with disabilities are entitled to public education until age 21. After that, families must apply for support through various programs and organizations. Services and financial assistance are contingent on eligibility requirements and the availability of funds.

Two Republican Congressmen Propose A Way To Balance The Budget

Two Republican Congressmen think they've found a way to help balance the budget and restore some Defense spending. And federal employees would foot the bill. The proposed new law would cancel sequestration entirely for the Defense Department and a handful of other security-related agencies in fiscal 2014 and 2015. It would offset that move by requiring federal employees to contribute more of their salary toward their pension. It would trim Medicare payments and agricultural subsidies among other entitlement reforms. Backing the bill are Reps. Jim Bridenstine (R-Okla.) and Doug Lamborn (R-Colo.). They say their bill could reduce deficits by $200 billion over the next 10 years.

Montgomery County Minimum Wage Might Be Tricky To Enforce

Enforcing Montgomery County’s new minimum wage law raising it to $11.50 an hour over several years may be much trickier than the council bargained for when it rushed through passage of the bill last week.

The Montgomery County Council provided that the county’s Office of Human Rights could enforce an area of law that it has no experience with, but then it told the county executive to delegate that enforcement to a state agency.

But an official at the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR), which oversees enforcement of the state minimum wage, said that can’t be done under current law.

Rand Paul: Americans Trading Liberty For False Security

In the opening pages of Ray Bradbury’s famous novel Fahrenheit 451, protagonist Guy Montag asks: Wasn’t there a time when firemen used to put out fires? They laugh at him, rebuke him and say: Everybody knows firemen start fires.

Montag knew this. Montag’s father and his grandfather had been firemen. It had been his duty for many years to start fires. He knew it was his duty to burn books, but this day would be different.

Montag arrived on the scene to do his job but found a woman who wouldn’t leave. He complained that she had all of her books but still wouldn’t leave. Undeterred, Montag proceeds with the other firemen to douse her books—and her—with kerosene. The woman shouts out and goads them. She is indignant that they would touch her books at all, and she still wouldn’t leave. She says to them: “Play the man, Master Ridley; today we will light such a candle, by God’s grace, in England, that it won’t be forgotten.”

Harry Reid Gives Some Staffers A Pass On Obamacare

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is breaking with fellow congressional leaders on Capitol Hill by giving some members of his staff an exemption from having to purchase health coverage through Obamacare’s new insurance exchanges.

CNN reported that Mr. Reid and his personal staff will purchase insurance through the exchanges, but that the Nevada Democrat is using a loophole in the law that allows lawmakers to let their committee and leadership staffers keep their federal employee insurance plan.

“We are just following the law,” Adam Jentleson, a Reid spokesman, told CNN.

The move will provide some additional political fodder for Republicans, who have trained heavy fire at Obamacare — most recently pointing to the rocky rollout of the federal HealthCare.gov website as additional proof that the law is doomed to fail.

Some Reid Staffers Exempt From Obamacare Exchanges

Washington (CNN) -- Democratic Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, one of Obamacare's architects and staunchest supporters, is also the only top congressional leader to exempt some of his staff from having to buy insurance through the law's new exchanges.

Reid is the exception among the other top congressional leaders. GOP House Speaker John Boehner, House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi and Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell have all directed their staffs to join the exchange, their aides said.

After website woes, President pushes benefits of Obamacare

In the charged atmosphere surrounding Obamacare, Reid's decision only gives Republicans more ammo to attack Democrats already suffering politically from the law's botched rollout.

In September, Reid told reporters, "Let's stop these really juvenile political games -- the one dealing with health care for senators and House members and our staff. We are going to be part of exchanges, that's what the law says and we'll be part of that."

Expectations Drop For Congressional Budget Deal

Just a week away from its Dec. 13 deadline, lawmakers will have little time in their post-Thanksgiving legislative session to negotiate the kind of major budget deal they'd need to end the federal government's crisis-driven management style.

So rather than struggling to find a "grand bargain" that would offer compromises on spending, taxes and entitlements, lawmakers are now aiming for a narrow deal that would restore some of the cuts imposed under the budget-squeezing "sequester."

"It's looking like a much smaller deal that would hopefully give us a number we could appropriate for fiscal year 2014 … and hopefully a target number for 2015," Rep. Tom Cole, R-Texas, a member of the bipartisan House-Senate budget conference committee, told the Washington Examiner.

The special budget panel was created in October as part of the deal that provided temporary funding to end a 16-day government shutdown.

Eat These Flab Fighters Every Day

Many people needlessly shun raw nuts from their diet, believing their fat content contributes to weight gain. But mounting research suggests nuts such as pecans and macadamias may actually help you live longer—and help you lose weight to boot.

This isn’t so surprising considering the fact that tree nuts are high in healthful fats that, contrary to popular belief, your body needs for optimal function. Also, to optimize your health, weight, and longevity, you’ll want to shift your body from sugar-burning mode to fat-burning mode. One of the simplest and most effective ways to do this is to implement intermittent fasting.

In order for your body to begin burning fat as your primary fuel instead of sugar,it is helpful to swap non-vegetable carbohydrates like sugar and grains in your diet with high-quality healthful fats. Raw nuts are one source of such fats.

Investigation: MD Judges Reveal Much About Finances

Maryland ranks as one of the highest states in the nation when it comes to judges who disclose financial information at the state’s highest court level, but the investigation revealed Maryland earned a ‘C’ on its grading scale, according to the Center for Public Integrity, a Washington, D.C. based think tank.

The three year investigation looked over personal financial disclosures where they found judges who oversaw cases where they had a financial interest.

In all 50 states and the District of Columbia, 43 states received a failing grade, which make it difficult for the public to identify financial conflicts of interest of those on each state’s highest court.

New Toll Hike Hits Drivers Hard

Fort Lee, New Jersey (My9NJ) - Could you imagine spending $100 to drive over a bridge or through a tunnel? Well, as of Sunday, that is the new reality for truckers driving into Manhattan.

This will be the third of five Port Authority toll increases passed since 2011. It means only a 75 cent increase for car drivers using E-ZPass. For cash paying truckers, on the other hand, it means a $12 hike, taking them from $90 per crossing to $102 just to cross the George Washington Bridge.

Many truckers are upset over the toll increase. Independent trucker, David Edwards says that the toll hike is wiping them out. “I came across here the other day and had to do a lot of deliveries, and it cost me over $400,” he said.

The Wisdom Of Looking Like An Idiot Today

Stocks & Bonds

There has been an absolute party in the stock market over the past two years. The S&P is up nearly 40% (!) since early 2012 and has almost tripled since its 2009 lows. It's been nearly impossible not to make money in the stock market recently (unless you've owned mining shares).

Bonds have remained at historically-elevated prices. And although 2013 has seen prices come off slightly from their highs, prices are still substantially above pre-crisis levels.

The pumped-up performance of paper assets here is of course due to the staggering amounts of new money the Fed has been creating since 2008. Starting with a balance sheet of $880 billion pre-crisis, the Fed has since expanded it by an additional $3 trillion. In less than 5 years. And it's continuing to expand to the tune of $85 billion (some calculate $100 billion) per month.

Most of that money sits in excess reserves enriching the banks at zero risk, at high hidden cost to the public (a rant for another day). But enough of it is sloshing over into the markets where it does exactly what excess liquidity always does: rise all boats.

So, if you decided to stay out of the markets, you've watched the party boat pass you by. They say "Don't fight Fed" and so far, the Fed is indeed winning. In reality, it will likely prove to be the Charlie Sheen version of "winning", but to the casual observer whose 401k is up 20% this year, the Fed definitely appears to be playing the better hand.

Real Estate

How soon we forget. Home prices have resumed climbing at historically-aberrant rates. The Case-Shiller home price index just reported that, year-over-year, its national home price index grew by 11.2%.

A number of markets have re-entered bubble territory. San Francisco, where prices are now higher than at their 2007 peak, saw a 26% year-over-year increase in average prices. Las Vegas, the poster child for housing prices excesses six years ago, saw a 29% average price increase from 2012 to 2013.

The tell-tale sign of an overheated housing market -- house flipping -- is back.

If you've been holding off on purchasing real estate (as I have) -- expecting a stumble back into recession, or higher interest rates, could bring prices down to saner baselines -- again, you're watching prices get away from you.

CATO Speaker At Congressional Hearing Video/Transcript

During a Congressional committee hearing Tuesday concerning Presidential powers and President Barack Obama’s failure to implement his “law of the land “Affordable Care Act as written, an expert from the Cato Institute said that the President’s flagrant disregard for the rule of law has the potential to spark an armed rebellion against the government.

Michael Cannon, Director of Cato’s Health Policy Studies, said that the President’s failure to adhere to laws could give American citizens justification to follow suit in seeking to improve government on their own terms.

“There is one last … thing to which the people can resort if the government does not respect the restraints that the Constitution places on the government,” Cannon told lawmakers. “Abraham Lincoln talked about our right to alter our government or our revolutionary right to overthrow it.

“…That is certainly something that no one wants to contemplate,” he continued. “…If the people come to believe that the government is no longer constrained by the laws then they will conclude that neither are they.

“That … is a very dangerous sort of thing for the President to do, to wantonly ignore the laws,” Cannon concluded, “to try to impose obligation upon people that the legislature did not approve.”

Obamacare Slaps Taxes, Fees On Those He Promised To Protect

D-day arrived for Obamacare Saturday, and began with an 11-hour shutdown of HealthCare.gov — the problem-plagued website intended to provide easy access to affordable insurance for millions of Americans.

The contraption is functioning better but is still terribly inadequate. It can only handle 50,000 users at a time, well short of the volume needed to assist the millions of Americans who must purchase health insurance by year end or face fines.

Those eligible for subsidies must use the system, but often the system can’t verify eligibility for aid. Many are in limbo — applications already initiated are stalled, lost or otherwise can’t be completed.

Together with Rehoboth Beach police, officers were able to determine that the suspect, Jason J. Wilz, 33, of Millsboro, DE, committed the thefts in both areas.

Wilz has been charged by Ocean City police with second and fourth degree burglary, two counts of theft ($1,000-$10,000), two counts of theft scheme ($1,000-$10,000) and three counts of theft under $1,000. Wilz is currently in custody at Sussex Correctional Institute in Georgetown, DE, for similar charges from Rehoboth Beach police.

Owners are reminded to secure the kegs by putting them in a locked cage, using a chain or keeping them in a secure location within the establishment to avoid becoming a victim.

81% of Americans Want Obamacare Repealed

Editor’s Note: The complete rejection of Obamacare by Americans goes hand-in-hand with their disgust with Congress, which now has anunprecedented 9% approval rating. Of course the Obama defenders will continue to downplay the strong resistance to Obamacare by distorting the truth.

Overwhelming majority of the country are against the healthcare takeover

Rasmussen reports that a whopping 81 percent of American voters wish to see the new health care law repealed or significantly changed, with exactly half saying the Affordable Care Act should be completely scrapped and started again from scratch.

The 50 percent figure is a seven point increase on numbers from late October. According to Rasmussen, a further 31 percent stated that the law should be reviewed and improved piece by piece, with only 16 percent saying that it should be left as it is now.

Voters were also asked about the mandate on businesses for providing health insurance that covers all government-approved contraceptives for women. The survey found that 51 percent oppose the mandate. which is currently being challenged in the U.S. Supreme Court.

The news comes as voters once again find out that the White House and HHS have told outright lies regarding the “fixing” of the obamacare website.

Hagel also called on Congress to avoid another year of forced budget cuts known as sequestration. He has said that forced reductions in 2013 have put at risk the military's ability to carry out its future missions.

After 12 Yrs Of U.S. Occupation, Afghanistan Sets Record For Growing Opium

(CNSNews.com) - After 12 years of occupation by U.S. military forces, Afghanistan set a record for growing opium poppies in 2013, according to newly released data from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.

“Opium poppy cultivation in Afghanistan reached a sobering record high in 2013,” said the UNODC. “According to the 2013 Afghanistan Opium Survey, cultivation amounted to some 209,000 hectares, outstripping the earlier record in 2007 of 193,000 hectares, and representing a 36 per cent increase over 2012.”

In fact, according to the latest worldwide data on opium-poppy cultivation, Afghanistan dedicates more land to the cultivation of opium poppies than all of the rest of the world combined.

Does The Welfare State Lower IQs?

Depressing news about black students scoring far below white students on various mental tests has become so familiar that people in different parts of the ideological spectrum have long ago developed their different explanations for why this is so. But both may have to do some rethinking, in light of radically different news from England.

The November 9th-15th issue of the distinguished British magazine “The Economist” reports that, among children who are eligible for free meals in England’s schools, black children of immigrants from Africa meet the standards of school tests nearly 60 percent of the time — as do immigrant children from Bangladesh and Pakistan. Black children of immigrants from the Caribbean meet the standards less than 50 percent of the time.

At the bottom, among those children who are all from families with low enough incomes to receive free meals at school, are white English children, who meet the standards 30 percent of the time.

“The Economist” points out that, in one borough of London, white students scored lower than black students in any London borough.

Blacks And Obama

In a March 2008 column, I criticized pundits’ concerns about whether America was ready for Barack Obama, suggesting that the more important issue was whether black people could afford Obama. I proposed that we look at it in the context of a historical tidbit.

In 1947, Jackie Robinson, after signing a contract with the Brooklyn Dodgers organization, broke the color barrier in Major League Baseball. He encountered open racist taunts and slurs from fans, opposing team players and even some members of his own team. Despite that, his batting average was nearly .300 in his first year. He led the National League in stolen bases and won the first Rookie of the Year award. There’s no sense of justice that requires a player be as good as Robinson in order to have a chance in the major leagues, but the hard fact of the matter is that as the first black player, he had to be.

In 1947, black people could not afford an incompetent black baseball player. Today we can. The simple reason is that as a result of the excellence of Robinson — and many others who followed him, such as Satchel Paige, Don Newcombe, Larry Doby and Roy Campanella — today no one in his right mind, watching the incompetence of a particular black player, could say, “Those blacks can’t play baseball.”

Pepco Asks For $43.3M From Customers

WASHINGTON - Pepco customers in Maryland could see their bills rise by a few bucks if a newly proposed rate hike is approved.

Pepco submitted the rate increase application to the Maryland Public Service commission Wednesday.

The company is asking for $43.3 million to help pay for investments it has made to improve the system between October 2012 and September 2013. It reports investing $238 million into the improvements, which it calls the Reliability Construction Project.

The improvements, including trimming trees, upgrading feeder and underground lines, have made a difference in the number of customer outages, Pepco says.

Obama’s Uncle Faces Deportation To Kenya For Immigration Violations (UPDATED)

Onyango Obama, the half-brother of PresidentBarack Obama’s late father, will appear for a deportation hearing in a Boston courtroom on Tuesday, after a 2011 drunk driving arrest revealed a history of immigration violations.

Obama, a 69-year-old liquor store employee in Farmingham, MA, a suburb of Boston, was helped over to the United States in 1963 by his brother. He was ordered deported twice in the late 1980s and lost an appeal in 1992, but never left the country; the drunk driving arrest, for which he served a year of probation, brought renewed focus to his case.

His lawyer said he would seek a green card under a statute that allows for applications from immigrants who have been in the country since before 1972. Immigration Judge Leonard Shapiro, the same judge who granted asylum to Obama’s aunt, will preside over the case. It’s the second deportation hearing for Obama following the arrest, after an appeals board ordered his case reviewed last December.

President Obama is not close to his father’s side of the family, and according to the White House has never met his uncle. Though Onyango Obama reportedly said “I think I will call the White House” after being arrested, the White House said they have had no contact with him.

UPDATE (3:35pm ET): A Boston immigration judge has ruled that Onyango Obama will be allowed to stay in the United States, saying the president’s 69-year-old uncle has “good moral character.”

Trophy Hunters Kill A Sacred Albino Moose

A rare albino moose, considered a sacred "spirit animal" by Nova Scotia's indigenous Mi'kmaq people, was killed last week by visiting hunters unaware of its spiritual significance. After the hunters posted photos of the kill on Facebook, outrage quickly spread both online and within the local Mi'kmaq community.

The CBC reports that the aboriginal communities have known about the moose for years, but do not kill it because it is considered sacred:

"We know the significance and we've been teaching that to the non-native population for almost 500 years — about the importance that this and other white animals played in our lives," he said. "We are not to harm them in any way, shape, or form because they could be one of our ancestors coming to remind us of something significant that's going to happen within our communities."
