Enforcing Montgomery County’s new minimum wage law raising it to $11.50 an hour over several years may be much trickier than the council bargained for when it rushed through passage of the bill last week.
The Montgomery County Council provided that the county’s Office of Human Rights could enforce an area of law that it has no experience with, but then it told the county executive to delegate that enforcement to a state agency.
But an official at the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation (DLLR), which oversees enforcement of the state minimum wage, said that can’t be done under current law.

Montgomery county will go from the richest in the state to the poorest with the highest unemployment rate. Watch and see.
ReplyDeleteThey had to pass it, to see what was in it. Now, they can fill in the voids created BY NOT KNOWING WTF YOU"RE DOING IN THE FIRST PLACE.
ReplyDeleteWe truly live in an a$$clown state, and nation.
Costco formerly known as Price Club lobbied hard for this increase. They want to run out smaller competition. Contrary to what most people think and believe big business is always behind these types of things including EPA regulations and other regulations, permits, fees, etc. Since the advent of the anti trust laws, they dreamed up this way to circumvent them and run out competition.

ReplyDelete"President Barack Obama wants to raise the federal minimum wage to $9 per hour. And the CEO of one of America's largest retailers says such a move would be good for workers and businesses alike. In fact, he says raise it even more.
On Tuesday, Costco CEO and President Craig Jelinek came out in support of the Fair Minimum Wage Act of 2013, which aims to raise the federal minimum wage to $10.10 per hour, then adjust it after that for inflation.
"At Costco, we know that paying employees good wages makes good sense for business," Jelinek said in a statement. "We pay a starting hourly wage of $11.50 in all states where we do business, and we are still able to keep our overhead costs low.""

ReplyDeleteCostco wants to raise the minimum wage because it would hurt its competition more then it would hurt itself. Who is the competition?? Sam's Club ring a bell? Linked with Walmart by distribution, it would severely hurt Walmart's bottomline and operation. Quite frankly, I don't think scanning items at a checkout counter is worth $10/hour. I'll head on over to the self checkout-I didn't like the disgruntled person at checkout anyway.
