LGBT Students: Sex And Gender Are Not The Same Thing

MILLINOCKET, Maine, December 1, 2013 – A student group at Mills College in Oakland, Calif. is exploring new grammar territory with its discussions of “preferred gender pronouns” or PGP for short.

Members of the group Mouthing Off! are helping shape gender references that are beginning to spread into the LGBT (lesbian, gay, bi-sexual and transgender) communities on campuses throughout the US and the world, and will inevitably appear in societal references of all types.

Obama's 'Clandestine' Plan To Make Bullets Vanish

Former U.S. Rep. Allen West, R-Fla., is joining the National Rifle Association and other gun-rights groups to warn about a back-door attack on the Second Amendment by the Obama administration’s Environmental Protection Agency.

In a column posted on his website Sunday, West wrote about the Doe Run company’s lead-producing plant in Herculaneum, Mo., which is being forced to close after the EPA required it to spend up to $100 million on upgrades.

Doe Run, the last primary lead smelter in the United States, has been around since 1892 but is closing on Dec. 31.

Safer Alternative To Weight-Loss Surgery: Stomach Implants

Researchers and engineers have developed new options for people having difficulty losing weight: implantable devices that help people eat less without the trauma of surgery or the risky side effects of obesity drugs.

At least six new implants have been developed by medical device manufacturers. Most, but not all, are implanted through endoscopes that go in through the mouth. The devices are often removed after a desired amount of weight is lost. They work through different mechanisms to give patients a feeling of fullness before they have overeaten. Many have still not been approved by the FDA, but may be available in clinical trials.

Abiliti, made by IntraPace Inc., has been used for years in Europe and FDA approval is pending in the U.S. It works by sending electrical pulses to the stomach to make people feel full with smaller meals. It also sends signals to the brain to discourage snacking between meals and late at night.

100K Sign Up On Federal Exchange In November, Administration Far Short Of Its Goals

This morning Bloomberg published a new report suggesting that, during the last month, roughly 100,000 people signed up for insurance at Healthcare.gov. The good news for the administration is that this represents almost a four-fold increase from the month before, when only a little over 26,000 people registered. So, the folks in the White House should be pretty happy, right?

Well, no, not really. In order to be on pace to meet their projections, they would have needed to register close to a million by now.

After two months of software errors and delays that have threatened the success of President Barack Obama's signature health law, the administration said yesterday that it met its self-imposed deadline and the site, healthcare.gov, is working smoothly for the majority of users. The fumbled rollout forced the administration to scale back its original enrollment targets of about 800,000 for the first two months.

Gays Seek Right To Divorce In Conservative States

HERNANDO, Miss. — Lauren Beth Czekala-Chatham wants to force Mississippi, one of the America's most conservative states, to recognize her same-sex marriage. She hopes to do so by getting a divorce.

She and Dana Ann Melancon traveled from Mississippi to San Francisco to get married in 2008. The wedding was all Czekala-Chatham hoped it would be, the Golden Gate Bridge in the background, dreams for a promising future. She wrote the vows herself.

The couple bought a house together in Walls, a town of about 1,100 in northern Mississippi's DeSoto County in June 2009. But the marriage was tumultuous and, like so many others, it didn't last.

A Crossroads In Delaware For Christie, Biden

A Biden-Christie faceoff in 2016 would pit alma mater's football fans against each other

They walked the same halls at the University of Delaware as students, shared the same mentor and still root heartily for the football team, sometimes seeing each other at home games in Newark.

Vice President Joe Biden and Gov. Chris Christie, whose time in Newark, Del., was separated by 20 years, are both defined by their outsized personas and keen political skills — skills that might bring them together once again for another kind of matchup.

Instead of being spectators together at Delaware Stadium, Biden, 71, and Christie, 51, could face off to become the next president of the United States, if the blue-and-gold gods have any say.

Volusia Candidate Denies Child's Claim

A Girl Told Police She Had A Sexual Relationship With Larry Stephens. No Charges Have Been Filed.

July 24, 2004|By Kevin P. Connolly and Denise-Marie Balona, Sentinel Staff Writers

DELAND -- Larry Stephens, a former substitute teacher and one of three candidates for Volusia County chairman, on Friday denied allegations in a police report that he had sex with a girl who lives in his neighborhood.

"It's untrue," Stephens, 44, of Daytona Beach said Friday. Stephens, who used to teach at the girl's school, Silver Sands Middle in Port Orange, has not been charged with a crime, police said.

But a Daytona Beach police detective signed an affidavit alleging Stephens had sexual intercourse with the girl, then 12, at his house on Alamanda Street in December 2003.

The affidavit was sent to state prosecutors in March, said Sonja Wiles, a police department spokeswoman. "It's really in their hands right now."

Linda Pruitt, spokeswoman for the State Attorney's Office, confirmed a "current, active investigation by this office" into the allegations but did not comment further.

Hill Leaders: Terror Threat Growing In US; Intel Community Not The 'Bad Guys'

The worldwide terror threat is growing and changing, making Americans less safe than they were in years past, the leaders of the House and Senate intelligence committees said Sunday.

“Terror is up worldwide,” said Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence. “The statistics indicate that. The fatalities are way up.”

Feinstein made her comments on CNN’s “State of the Union” during a joint interview with Rep. Mike Rogers, R-Mich., chairman of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, who argued the terror group Al Qaeda continues to grow and consolidate.

The Statistical Delusion Of Black Mob Violence

The deniers of black mob violence have a new mantra: “Colin, show us the numbers.” Otherwise, all this talk about the Knockout Game and an epidemic of black on white violence is a myth. An urban legend.

Really? Alright, you asked for it.

I wrote White Girl Bleed a Lot: The Return of Racial Violence to America and How the Media Ignore It for these exact people. The deniers. I did not really put a lot of numbers in White Girl because I figured: What was the point?

First off, the numbers on racial crime and violence are just as horrific as you can imagine. Pick a number between between 5 and 100. That is how many times greater black crime and violence is compared to white and Asian.

The only people who do not know that are ones who don’t want to know it.

Baltimore Paramedics Under Investigation For Leaving Patient In Alley

A Baltimore City paramedic crew is under investigation for the way they handled a blind, diabetic and homeless patient, the WBAL-TV 11 News I-Team has learned.

Paramedics said the patient was verbally abusive and violent on the way to the hospital and he demanded to be let out of the ambulance, and the paramedics obliged by leaving him in an alley.

It's a sacred trust between residents and government: A 911 medical call will be answered, and unless the patient refuses treatment, they will be transported. But what happened after a Baltimore City EMS crew picked up a patient is under investigation.

Jacqueline Cummings made a complaint about what she said she witnessed on Sept. 27 that still bothers her.

No, Obamacare Isn't Fixed

“Healthcare.gov on Dec. 1 is night and day from where it was on Oct. 1,” Jeff Zients, who was brought in to oversee fixes to the troubled Obamacare website, declared during a Sunday conference call.

But that statement says more about how badly the website was functioning on its launch date than it says about how well the site is functioning now.

Starting in late October, Zients declared that the website, which is supposed to enable residents of 36 states to sign up for insurance through President Obama's health care law, would be functional for a “vast majority” of users by the end of November.

HHS: 'We Have Met The Goal' Of Fixing Healthcare.gov

The Obama administration on Sunday touted “dramatic progress” in its efforts to fix the botched healthcare.gov website by the president's self-imposed deadline, saying they had “met the goal” of having a system that works for most users.

“While we strive to innovate and improve our outreach and systems for reaching consumers, we believe we have met the goal of having a system that will work smoothly for the vast majority of users,” said a report from the Department of Health and Human Services, detailing the “tech surge” working to repair the troubled Obamacare online insurance marketplace.

“Dramatic progress has been made on improving healthcare.gov,” the report said. “The new management system and instrumentation have helped improve site stability, lower the error rating below 1 percent, increase capacity to allow 50,000 concurrent users to simultaneously use the site and will help drive continuous improvement on the site.”

Teacher Pleads Guilty To Assault, Has Sentence Suspended

Timothy Krupica had all 12 years of his sentence suspended by a Montgomery County judge after pleading guilty to four counts of second-degree assault. He'll spend 3 years on supervised probation.

Krupica was accused in February of inappropriately touching two 11-year-old students at Meadow Hall Elementary School, where he had taught since August of 2009. At the time of the accusations, he was teaching 6th grade at the Twinbrook campus.

Under the conditions of his plea deal, Krupica is not allowed to teach any students under the age of 16.

The 2016 Presidential Candidate That No One Is Talking About

There is a candidate lurking for a 2016 run that could change our nation’s history forever, and not in a good way. I am going to go on record with a prediction here and I honestly hope I end up with egg on my face.

It is my belief that a 3rd party candidate is being hand-picked and/or groomed as we speak. This is not just a normal 3rd party candidate that will get 1-2% of the vote. I believe this candidate will be more like Ross Perot and seriously complicate the election while guaranteeing that Hillary Clinton will become our next president.

It’s time for a reality check. We need to look no further than the recent Virginia Governor’s race.

It was not necessarily the strength of McAuliffe that defeated Ken Cuccinelli. It was more the presence of a third party (Libertarian) candidate named Robert Sarvis, who was able to gain 6.5% of the popular vote. Most of those votes came from Cuccinelli and thus guaranteed a McAuliffe victory.

Education: Let Down By Our Leaders

Many Americans feel abandoned, first, by the people officially in charge of education: National Education Association, Department of Education, National Council of Teachers of Math, National Council of Teachers of English, the Common Core Consortium, and another 20 groups with pretentious names and sly agendas. These groups have plotted, many suspect, to dumb down our public schools.

Parents have to grapple with the thought that our Education Establishment has deliberately devised reading methods (Whole Word) that make kids illiterate. They have dreamed up math instruction (Reform Math) that keeps kids from learning to multiply and divide. They’ve created teaching methods (Constructivism) that almost guarantee that children will not learn much factual knowledge.

If learning is taking place, elite educators have a knack for formulating new policies and practices that end up neutralizing those occasional bits of good news. For parents, it’s a Kafka thing. They’re in an endless labyrinth, and never find progress.

Not just the people officially in charge of education have let us down, but all the people who should be protecting us from these strange invaders. Where are the media of all kinds, where are the elite universities where is the Chamber of Commerce? Where’s the business community, where is the old money while they let the public schools subside into mediocrity? Where are the community leaders

Virginia Taxation Department Breaks With U.S. Treatment Of Same-Sex Married Couples

Virginia may be for lovers, but for same-sex married couples who already had to go elsewhere to tie the knot, tax time could present new burdens.

The reason is a recent decision by Virginia’s tax collectors to treat gay couples differently than the IRS does.

The Virginia Department of Taxation, after consulting with Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli II’s office, has ruled that the state will not conform to the U.S. Internal Revenue Service’s new tax treatment of same-sex married couples because state law and a state constitutional amendment prohibit recognition of gay marriage.

Supreme Court Deals Death Blow To Christian College's ObamaCare Suit

The Supreme Court on Monday refused to hear a challenge to ObamaCare brought by a Virginia-based Christian university, ending for now one of the biggest remaining legal fights against the health care law.

The justices, in turning away the lawsuit from Liberty University and leaving in place a federal appeals court ruling dismissing it, did not comment on their decision. The decision comes less than a week after the high court agreed to hear a separate challenge from Hobby Lobby and one other company to the law's so-called contraception mandate -- the requirement on most employers to provide access to contraceptive coverage.

Rules Of Engagement Limit The Actions Of U.S. Troops And Drones In Afghanistan

Say dwellings now virtual safe havens for terrorists

The new U.S.-Afghanistan security agreement adds restrictions on already bureaucratic rules of engagement for American troops by making Afghan dwellings virtual safe havens for the enemy, combat veterans say.

The rules of engagement place the burden on U.S. air and ground troops to confirm with certainty that a Taliban fighter is armed before they can fire — even if they are 100 percent sure the target is the enemy. In some cases, aerial gunships have been denied permission to fire even though they reported that targets on the move were armed.

The proposed Bilateral Security Agreement announced Wednesday by Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Secretary of State John F. Kerry all but prohibits U.S. troops from entering dwellings during combat. President Obama made the vow directly to Mr. Karzai.

“U.S. forces shall not enter Afghan homes for the purposes of military operations, except under extraordinary circumstances involving urgent risk to life and limb of U.S. nationals,” Mr. Obama pledged in a letter to the Afghan leader.

Snap: Ex-'Skins Owner Says Remove 'Washington' If You Think Redskins Name Is Offensive

One-time Washington Redskins part-owner Mortimer Zuckerman has joined those who think the offensive word in the team’s name isn’t “Redskins.”

The U.S. News & World Report and New York Daily News owner suggests that to keep the dignity of the team’s name, owner Daniel Snyder ought to remove “Washington.”

Discussing his brief partnership with Snyder as a ‘Skins part-owner, Zuckerman, most known for his real estate empire and Boston Properties REIT, addressed a Washington Post question about the name controversy.

Q: Should the Redskins change their name?

Zuckerman: You have to be empathetic to people who are insulted by the name, and I certainly am. But it’s been such a part of Washington for so long, I don’t think it has the sort of implication, the denigration or the diminution that some people might suggest. And my view is, if you want to change the name because of that, take out the name Washington.

WWII Navajo Code Talkers In Redskins Jackets Embrace Team Name

The heroic World War II Navajo Code Talkers made a lot of people feel silly this week when they not only approved the Washington Redskins’ name, but called the moniker a symbol of courage and loyalty. Four Code Talkers were honored for their service at Monday night’s game against the San Francisco 49ers. Although they met briefly with team owner Dan Snyder, the team’s name never came up nor were the men asked to endorse it, Roy Hawthorne, vice president of the Navajo Code Talkers Association, told Fox News. Yet the Code Talkers gave their tacit seal of approval when three of the four appeared wearing official team jackets. Hawthorne was asked if their appearance was meant as a statement. “We didn’t have that in mind, but that is undoubtedly what we did do,” he said, according to Fox News. “My opinion is that’s a name that not only the team should keep, but that’s a name that’s American.” More

American Jihad: U.S. Officials Worried Over Number Of Citizens Headed To Syria

Federal officials say Americans are joining the bloody civil war in Syria, raising the chances they could become radicalized by al-Qaeda-linked militant groups and return to the U.S. as battle-hardened security risks.

The State Department says it has no estimates of how many Americans have taken up weapons to fight military units loyal to Syrian President Bashar Assad in the 3-year-old war that has killed more than 100,000 people. Other estimates — from an arm of the British defense consultant IHS Jane’s and from experts at a nonprofit think tank in London — put the number of Americans at a couple dozen. The IHS group says al-Qaeda-linked fighters number about 15,000, with total anti-Assad force at 100,000 or more.

This year, at least three Americans have been charged with planning to fight beside Jabhat al-Nusrah — a radical Islamic organization that the U.S. considers a foreign terrorist group — against Assad. The most recent case involves a Pakistan-born North Carolina man arrested on his way to Lebanon.

You Say You Want A Revolution

I love movies. I always have. I make a lot references to movies both in my writing and on my radio show. It’s not unique to me. Most writers, hosts and everyone else for that matter, make at least occasional references, if not flat-out word-for-word quotes of movies while making points, even in politics. This is not an accident.

What happens in movies, television, music, whatever, eventually makes its way into the political realm. Pop culture is the fertilizer for the seeds from which the future sprouts. And on the pop culture front conservatives are sorely lagging.

I hear it all the time – conservatives complaining about “the messages coming out of Hollywood” – and they’re right. Hollywood is a bastion of like-minded, unthinking liberalism. They also wonder where the “conservative movies” are. There’s really no such thing as “liberal movies” or “conservative movies,” there are only good and bad movies that happen to have something liberal or conservative in them.

Before Obamacare became law, how many movies and TV shows were made about the sorry state of the health insurance system? For decades we’ve been inundated with stories of mean insurance companies denying care to sweet, innocent people (mostly children), or how someone without insurance was screwed over by the system, and watched as the hero stood up to or for them and won. It’s a compelling storyline from a human standpoint, but it’s also incredibly rare. But each of them helped in their own little way in the fight over Obamacare.

When all this began, the vast majority – upwards of 85 percent of Americans by most counts – had health insurance and were quite happy with it. But a story about a child who gets sick and gets treated because his parents had insurance is not a compelling story. It’s boring. It’s what’s supposed to happen.

Economist Challenges Idea Of Aging Farmer Crisis

Agriculture economists have long warned that farmers are getting old and staying on their land longer, delaying the turnover to a younger generation. But an Ohio State University professor argues that those fears are overstated and the United States likely will have little problem replacing aging farmers as long as business is good, as it has been for the past decade.

Others aren't so sure, saying while they agree with OSU agriculture economist Carl Zulauf's assessment that concerns about the unquestionably aging farmer population remain valid and create uncertainty about who will produce the nation's crops in the future.

"I think what he said is absolutely right," Iowa State University economics professor Mike Duffy said. "I think the conclusion he's drawing though is not necessarily the correct one."

Lose Insurance Under Obamacare, Speak Up, IRS Audits You

It was tragic that Bill Elliot of South Carolina was stricken with cancer; reassuring that his excellent insurance covered his expensive but medically advanced treatment and he was doing well.

And then came another tragedy--in the form of an elitist, totalitarian, Know It All Government, almost worse than the cancer. The Affordable Care Act, Obamacare, deemed Elliot's fine insurance policy unacceptable--probably because it didn't include maternity coverage--and offered him another policy with higher, "affordable" premiums that Elliot couldn't afford. As he told Megyn Kelly of Fox News, he didn't want to burden his family with the unaffordable affordable premiums so he decided to do without insurance and "let nature take its course."

But then...good news! Health insurance broker C. Stephen Tucker learned about Elliot's plight from Fox News and helped him keep his insurance.

Christian B&B Owners Lose Supreme Court Appeal: Forced To Sell Business After Gay Couple Complains

LONDON, (LifeSiteNews.com) – Peter and Hazelmary Bull, the Christian hoteliersfined for refusing a single room to two homosexual men in September 2008, have lost their appeal to the UK’s Supreme Court, with the court ruling that their company policy was “discriminatory.”

Despite the fact that the couple proved that their policy applied equally to any unmarried couples, and not just homosexuals, all five judges ruled the Bulls’ policy to be a case of illegal discrimination on the grounds of sexual orientation, and dismissed their appeal. Two of the judges said the discrimination was “indirect,” but unjustified.

The elderly couple said they were “deeply disappointed and saddened” at the decision that has “reinforced the notion that gay rights must trump everything else.”

The President As Police Commissioner: Cops And Collectivism

“The government consists of a gang of men exactly like you and me. They have, taking one with another, no special talent for the business of government, they have only a talent for getting and holding office. Their principal device to that end is to search out groups who pant and pine for something they can’t get and promise to give it to them. Nine times out of ten, that promise is worth nothing. The tenth time it is made good by looting A to satisfy B. In other words, government is a broker in pillage, and every election is a sort of an advance auction of the sale of stolen goods.”

-H.L. Mencken

The police are the greatest threat to human liberty in history. Historically, they have been the instruments of oppression throughout the ages. Absent this enforcement mechanism, no member of the political class, that curious professional remora priesthood that plagues societies that usurps power and assumes “delegated powers” not permitted of the serfs that elect them to office or suffer under their dictatorial power could not exist.

The fear of a few bad men is not curbed by putting the worst men in charge.

Investigators are still working to determine the circumstances surrounding the single-vehicle crash that killed actor Paul Walker and another man Saturday in Valencia, sheriff’s officials said.

Speed may have been a factor in the crash, which occurred about 3:30 p.m. on Hercules Street, a normally quiet road with a 45-mph speed limit, Los Angeles County sheriff’s officials said. Walker was apparently the passenger in the 2005 red Porsche Carrera GT.

The four-lane road up the hilly street has signs warning drivers to slow down as they approach an uphill curve near the site of the accident.

Amazon Testing Deliveries By Drone

Online retailer Amazon announced Sunday that it is planning a new delivery service in which products would be delivered with the use of unmanned drones.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos unveiled the so-called "Octocopters" in an interview that aired Sunday on CBS "60 Minutes," and claimed that the drones would not be ready to take flight for another four or five years. However, after the interview aired, Amazon released a statement promising that "Prime Air vehicles will be as normal as seeing mail trucks on the road today."
