DELAND -- Larry Stephens, a former substitute teacher and one of three candidates for Volusia County chairman, on Friday denied allegations in a police report that he had sex with a girl who lives in his neighborhood.
"It's untrue," Stephens, 44, of Daytona Beach said Friday. Stephens, who used to teach at the girl's school, Silver Sands Middle in Port Orange, has not been charged with a crime, police said.
But a Daytona Beach police detective signed an affidavit alleging Stephens had sexual intercourse with the girl, then 12, at his house on Alamanda Street in December 2003.
The affidavit was sent to state prosecutors in March, said Sonja Wiles, a police department spokeswoman. "It's really in their hands right now."
Linda Pruitt, spokeswoman for the State Attorney's Office, confirmed a "current, active investigation by this office" into the allegations but did not comment further.
Society doesn't care ... big deal.
