Peak Obesity?

Obesity rates have increased at least slightly so far in 2013 across almost all major demographic and socioeconomic groups, according to Gallup's latest study. The largest upticks between 2012 and 2013 were among those aged 45 to 64 and those who earn between $30,000 and $74,999 annually - which 'coincidentally' is perfectly in the cohort that is 'disincentized' to work by the growing shadow of bought votes and entitlements. So, the question then becomes, is the considerable spike in 2013 that is so evident below the "peak" in obesity rates as the government is forced to introduce more haircuts on its foodstamp program? Time will tell...

US Obesity rate is spiking (along with the Fed's balance sheet and stocks...)

WhoWhatWhy Bush And The JFK Hit, Part 7: Empire Strikes Back

What possible connection could there have been between George H.W. Bush and the assassination of John F. Kennedy? Or between the C.I.A. and the assassination? Or between Bush and the C.I.A.? For some people, apparently, making such connections was as dangerous as letting one live wire touch another. Here, in anticipation of the 50th anniversary of the JFK assassination in November, is the seventh part of a ten-part series of excerpts from WhoWhatWhy editor Russ Baker’s bestseller, Family of Secrets: The Bush Dynasty, America’s Invisible Government and the Hidden History of the Last Fifty Years [2]. The story is a real-life thriller.

Note: Although these excerpts do not contain footnotes, the book itself is heavily footnoted and exhaustively sourced. (The excerpts in Part 7 come from Chapter 6 of the book, and the titles and subtitles have been changed for this publication.)

For Part 1, please go here [3]; Part 2, here; [4] Part 3, here; [5] Part 4, here; [6] Part 5, here; [7] P art 6, here [8].

Little is Ever What it Seems

The evidence was mounting that Poppy Bush was not the genial bumbler the public remembered – the bland fellow in the turtleneck who drove a golf cart around Kennebunkport and could never make up his mind.

Apparently Poppy had secrets, and he kept them well. It seems that he had been involved in intelligence work for much of his adult life. He had been in and around hot spots of covert action. And in the fall of 1963, he had for some unfathomable reason been worried that someone would discover he had been in Dallas on the evening of November 21 and seemingly the morning of November 22.

As far as I knew, he had attended the oilmen’s meeting and then left for Tyler. Why hide that fact?

One obvious reason is that no one with any political ambition would want to be associated in the public’s mind with the events in Dallas on November 22, 1963. But in that case, what does it say about Poppy that his first instinct was to create an elaborate cover story to airbrush away an inconvenient fact?

It is theoretically possible, of course, that there was something totally apart from the assassination he didn’t want known. But given his documented intelligence ties and the fact that figures close to him were connected to the event, the likelihood that his attempt to distance himself from Dallas on November 22 was unrelated to the tragedy of that day seems low.

What Has Happened to America?

The roll out of Obamacare, the abject failure of the website, the total confusion, people losing their private insurance programs before they are enrolled in the monstrosity that is the "Affordable Care Act," the president making promises that he knows he can't keep - and all the other sloppy inattention to detail, the amateurish attitude of those who are supposed to be in charge, and the overall unacceptable level of incompetence would embarrass even the most arrogant of presidential administrations and have the nation up in arms and ready to put up a set of gallows between the two houses of Congress.

But, something has happened to America in the last couple of decades: a large part of the population has conceded its future to a government that grows bigger and more intrusive every day. Rather than take their heads out of the sand and admit that they are passing along a fiscal monster that's going to devour the prosperity of foreseeable generations, they choose to accept:

Federal Debt Jumped $409 Billion in October; $3,567 Per Household

The debt of the federal government, which is normally subject to a legal limit, jumped by $409 billion in the month of October, according to the U.S. Treasury.

That equals approximately $3,567 for each household in the United States, and is the second-largest one month jump in the debt in the history of the country.

In the continuing resolution deal sealed by President Barack Obama and the Republican congressional leadership last month, the legal limit on the federal debt was suspended until February 7 of next year.

'PURGE SURGE': OBAMA FIRES ANOTHER COMMANDER

WASHINGTON – After multiple top generals described to WND what they regard as a full-scale “purge” of the U.S. military by the Obama administration, the commander of U.S. Army Garrison Japan was summarily relieved of duty and his civilian deputy reassigned, pending a “misconduct” investigation.

Nine generals and flag officers have been relieved of duty under Obama just this year – widely viewed as an extraordinary number – and several sources put the total number of senior officers purged during the five years of the Obama administration as close to 200.

Lawmakers Could Save Millions By Targeting Food Stamp Fraud

As House and Senate negotiators meet for the first joint talks on a bill that includes sharp cuts to food-stamp funding, an open question is whether lawmakers will get serious about targeting fraud in the massive program.

A recent inspector general audit suggests a full-blown crackdown on fraud could save $222 million a year.

The amount appears relatively small considering the government pays out roughly $70 billion in annual food stamps benefits. But negotiators will likely consider every penny of potential savings as they try to bridge the gap between the GOP-led House’s proposed $40 billion cut and the Democrat-led Senate’s $4.5 billion cut.

Food stamps, officially known as the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, are part of the larger farm bill but are being dealt with through the House’s separate Nutrition Reform and Work Opportunity bill.

GOVERNOR O’MALLEY SIGNS EXECUTIVE ORDER TO IMPROVE MARYLAND EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS

REISTERSTOWN, MD  – As part of the O’Malley-Brown Administration’s commitment to homeland security, Governor Martin O’Malley issued an Executive Order to adopt the Maryland Emergency Preparedness Program (MEPP). The MEPP is the overarching platform to ensure a consistent and comprehensive approach to preparedness.

The Executive Order outlines the roles and responsibilities related to the four mission areas used for measuring preparedness -- prevention and protection, hazard mitigation, incident response and disaster recovery. The Order is part of the Administration’s ongoing efforts to improve our State's ability to withstand adverse conditions, both natural and man-made. Under the Executive Order, the Maryland Emergency Management Agency (MEMA), Maryland State Police, and other state agencies are charged with fulfilling the activities that support those four core mission areas.

“Our most solemn obligation as public servants is to ensure the safety of our people. Over the last several years, winter blizzards, Hurricanes Irene and Sandy and the derecho storms have given us many opportunities to learn new lessons in safety and preparedness,” said Governor O’Malley. “Building on those lessons, this new program will help to improve preparedness among individuals, businesses and governments throughout Maryland.”

MEMA is coordinating the new efforts with other state agencies, local partners and the private sector.

“Traditionally, state emergency management agency plans focus on roles and responsibilities during the response phase of an emergency – providing help for local governments and their first responders,” saidMEMA Director Ken Mallette. “Now, we will develop robust plans to deal with those other mission areas – recovery, prevention and mitigation’ – so we will be better prepared to serve our residents.”

Government Shutdown 2013: Federal Workers Sue Government Post-Shutdown

The government shutdown may feel like ancient history, but some federal workers say they’re still dealing with the financial consequences. Even though they received back-pay, they are now suing the government.

So far, there are just five federal workers who have joined this collective action lawsuit – which is different than a class action lawsuit, because plaintiffs must opt-in and file the appropriate paperwork. They hope and believe more federal workers will sign on.

The five workers employed by the Bureau of Prisons in cities across the country were deemed "essential” and worked throughout the 16 day shutdown, but they were not paid in-full until the shutdown ended.

Asian Ladybugs Becoming Peskier For Homeowners

Have you noticed an inordinate amount of ladybugs around lately?

It’s to be expected, according to Jennifer Frye, an invertebrate ecologist at the Maryland Department of Natural Resources.

“This is something that’s been happening more and more in the last couple of decades,” she says.

But these aren’t American insects. They are actually Asia natives that were first introduced to America in the early 1900s to control aphids, otherwise known as plant lice. The population began thriving here in the 1980s.

So You Think Acetominaphen Is Safe?

When it comes to proven, over-the-counter solutions for easing pain and controlling a fever, acetaminophen (also called paracetamol, and best known by the brand name, Tylenol) has long been the preferred recommendation for many. It is actually the most widely used product of its kind, and with good reason. When compared to other non-prescription pain relievers and fever reducers, such as aspirin or ibuprofen, acetaminophen is considered to be much more safe — especially for young children, people with weak or compromised liver function, or blood-clotting concerns. [1]
The Dangers of Acetaminophen

But, not so fast. Despite being a better choice than some of the alternatives, acetaminophen doesn’t exactly get a free pass. To the contrary, severe health problems such as liver damage and death have been reported, even after “mild” overdose.

Nasty New Computer Virus Holds Your Data Hostage

A nasty new kind of computer virus is making the rounds.

The Cryptolocker virus is what's known as "Ransomware." It encrypts the files on a user's computer and then demands a payment to get it back. And in this case, that data is encrypted using a key that's so strong that even a supercomputer couldn't break it. For users, that means that unless they pay the ransom, their files are as good as gone. To get the files back, the virus demands payments of anywhere from $300 to $1000.

Cryptolocker is being spread by malicious files attached to "phishing" e-mails. The e-mails purport to come from banking or shipping companies, and include attached files which appear to be PDF text files. What the user doesn't know is that clicking on those files will install the virus on their machine. Experts also say the viruses are NOT being caught by current anti-virus programs. What that means is that by the time it shows up on your machine, it's too late to stop it.

Must-Read: Texas Single Mom's Viral 'Thank You' Letter to Obama

A single mother in Texas by the name of Yolanda Burroughs-Vestal has written a ‘thank you’ letter to President Obama that just demands to be read:

Dear President Obama,

I wanted to take a moment to say thank you for all you have done and are doing. You see I am a single Mom located in the very small town of Palmer, Texas. I live in a small rental house with my two children. I drive an older car that I pray daily runs just a little longer. I work at a mediocre job bringing home a much lower paycheck than you or your wife could even imagine living on. I have a lot of concerns about the new “Obamacare” along with the taxes being forced on us Americans and debts you are adding to our country. I have a few questions for you Mr. President.

Have you ever struggled to pay your bills? I have.

Why Congress Is Trying To Kill The CFTC

There are lots of problems with America’s regulatory agencies. Budgets shouldn’t be one of them.

Take the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), a great case in point.

The CFTC is responsible for a lot of regulation. It now regulates the largest, most opaque market on the planet, the $400 trillion-plus swaps derivatives market.

And while $400 trillion is a big deal, so is catching LIBOR manipulating crooks, and commodity pooling Ponzi-schemers, and Jon Corzine, and determining whether banks (I’m not going to name names, Goldman Sachs) that own commodity warehouses that control metals are manipulating prices.

All of the market-related things the CFTC regulates and is responsible for are, depending on who’s being screwed, relatively equal in importance.

U.S. Govt. May Force Doctors To Accept Obamacare And Medicare Patients, Eventually At Gunpoint

The primary tool of socialism is force, and while that force usually begins with good intentions codified into law, it inevitably ends up with the kind of force used by Mao Zedong to murder millions of his own citizens. “Political power grows out of the barrel of a gun,” he famously stated, and Obama-supporting democrats are following in his footsteps.

Word from the street is that Kathleen Murphy, a democrat running for the House, wants to make it a legal requirement that doctors accept Medicare and Obamacare patients.

Many doctors, of course, have already announced that will not accept such patients because they would go bankrupt if they did. The government’s payout on medical services rendered to patients in these groups is a total joke, you see: doctors sometimes receive only 30% of what they actually billed. And they can’t negotiate, either. The government simply tells you what you “get” to receive in terms of payment, regardless of how much you actually billed as a doctor.

Ron Paul: What Was Not Said About Iraq

October was Iraq’s deadliest month since April, 2008. In those five-and-a-half years, not only has there been no improvement in Iraq’s security situation, but things have gotten much worse. More than 1,000 people were killed in Iraq last month, the vast majority of them civilians. Another 1,600 were wounded, as car bombs, shootings, and other attacks continue to maim and murder.

As post-“liberation” Iraq spirals steadily downward, Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki was in Washington last week to plead for more assistance from the United States to help restore order to a society demolished by the 2003 U.S. invasion. Al-Qaeda has made significant recent gains, Maliki told President Barack Obama at their meeting last Friday, and Iraq needs more U.S. military aid to combat its growing influence.

CIA HIT IN 1950S MIRRORS JFK ASSASSINATION

Neither accused killer lived to tell his story
The JFK assassination bears remarkable resemblance to a coup d’etat in Guatemala engineered by the CIA under the direction of Allen Dulles during the Eisenhower administration in the 1950s, contends WND senior writer Jerome Corsi, author of the newly released “Who Really Killed Kennedy? 50 Years Later: Stunning New Revelations about the JFK Assassination.”

The CIA plan was to shoot and kill the Guatemalan head-of-state and place the blame for the assassination on a “patsy,” a person innocent of the crime, who in turn would be murdered to frustrate any subsequent criminal investigation or trial.

Millersville MD, Three Main St. Gym boxers competed in Millersville Saturday evening at Club One. The night has a card of 19 bouts that included novice, open and junior divisions.

Nine year old Erick Acosta, who attends Fruitland Elementary School fought in the 70lb division and was edged out in a close decision by Lawrence Malcolm of Keystone Boxing.

In the third bout of the night, Kobe Moore a Wi Middle School
Student fought in the 90lb, 11 year old division and lost a closely fought battle to Keith Cooke of No-Excuse Boxing.

The fifth bout of the night saw Lavont Shakoor of Salisbury in his competition debut. Lavont who is 8 years old and weighed 60 lbs won his very first bout with a solid decision over Jimmy McGavin of Club One in front of a large, pro McGavin home crowd.

“ The kids did a great job tonight and I am very proud of all of them, It takes so much to climb up the ring and stay focused on what you have learned, You have the crowd and an opponent you have never seen, People don’t realize the composure it takes for these kids, I was happy to see Lavont get a win in his first fight, He is a good little guy and works hard in the gym. Kobe and Erick have had many wins and will see many more, but getting a win out of the gate can be a big motivator” Said Coach Hal Chernoff of the Main St Gym.

Internet Displeased With Hallmark For Switching Carol’s Lyrics From “Gay” To “Fun” On Ornament

In 1794, when “Deck the Halls” was written, if someone said they were having a “gay” time, it meant one thing: Happy. But just because the meaning of that word has changed in the intervening years, many Hallmark customers are not at all pleased that the greeting card company dropped the original “don we now our gay apparel” lyric in favor of “fun” for a new ugly holiday sweater Christmas ornament.

Facebook commentators took up arms against the company’s switch on Hallmark’s page, writing that Hallmark shouldn’t have changed the lyrics in the spirit of being politically correct — and besides, “gay” isn’t a dirty word, said others.

At Least 3.5 Million Americans Have Now Had Their Health Insurance Policies Canceled Thanks To Obamacare

Americans see potential for winners and losers under health law, causing anxiety and confusion

WASHINGTON (AP)
— Now is when Americans start figuring out that President Barack Obama's health care law goes beyond political talk, and really does affect them and people they know.

With a cranky federal website complicating access to new coverage and some consumers being notified their existing plans are going away, the potential for winners and losers is creating anxiety and confusion.

"I've had questions like, 'Are they going to put me in jail if I don't buy insurance? Because nobody will sell it to me,'" said Bonnie Burns, a longtime community-level insurance counselor from California. "We have family members who are violently opposed to 'Obamacare' and they are on Medicaid — they don't understand that they're already covered by taxpayer benefits.

"And then there is a young man with lupus who would have never been insurable," Burns continued. "He is on his parents' plan and he'll be able to buy his own coverage. They are very relieved."

A poll just out from the nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation documents shifts in the country in the month since insurance sign-ups began.

Fifty-five percent now say they have enough information to understand the law's impact on their family, up 8 percentage points in just one month. Part of the reason is that advertising about how to get coverage is beginning to register.

"The law is getting more and more real for people," said Drew Altman, the foundation's president. "A lot of this will turn on whether there's a perception that there have been more winners than losers. ... It's not whether an expert thinks something is a better insurance policy, it's whether people perceive it that way."

Prostitutes And Lady Gaga Tickets

A Navy commander sells secrets to a Southeast Asian contractor and cheats the government out of tens of millions of dollars. Court documents charge Navy Commander Michael Misiewicz with passing confidential information on ship routes in exchange for prostitutes and Lady Gaga tickets. The Navy commander and a government contractor, nicknamed Fat Leonard, allegedly diverted aircraft carriers and destroyers to Asian ports with lax oversight where the contractor could overcharge the Navy millions for fuel, food and collect money for tariffs fabricated using phony port authorities. A senior Navy investigator, accused of keeping Francis abreast of the investigation, is also charged.

Democratic Senator: Shut Down HealthCare.gov

The Obama administration says a senior Democratic Senator asked the White House to shut down HealthCare.gov until it's fixed. The answer was "no." The Wall Street Journal reports, the request came from Sen. Dianne Feinstein. It went to Denis McDonough, the president's chief of staff. He says administration officials believe it's easier to fix the site if it's kept running. McDonough said the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services had also considered taking it offline.

Middle-Class Migration

Americans are moving away from high-tax, high-housing-cost states.

Where are Americans moving, and why? Timothy Noah, writing in the Washington Monthly, professes to be puzzled. He points out that people have been moving out of states with high per capita incomes — Connecticut, New York, Massachusetts, Maryland — to states with lower income levels.

“Why are Americans by and large moving away from economic opportunity rather than toward it?” he asks.

Actually, it’s not puzzling at all. The movement from high-tax, high-housing-cost states to low-tax, low-housing-cost states has been going on for more than 40 years, as I note in my new bookShaping Our Nation: How Surges of Migration Transformed America and Its Politics. Between 1970 and 2010, the population of New York state increased from 18 million to 19 million. In that same period, the population of Texas increased from 11 million to 25 million. The picture is even starker if you look at major metro areas. The New York metropolitan area, including counties in New Jersey and Connecticut, increased from 17.8 million in 1970 to 19.2 million in 2010 — up 8 percent. During that time, the nation grew 52 percent. In the same period, the four big metro areas in Texas — Dallas, Houston, San Antonio, Austin — grew from 6 million to 15.6 million, a 160 percent increase.

AP Editors: Obama Relies On Staged Propaganda Photos

Editors of The Associated Press condemned the White House’s refusal to give photojournalists real access to President Obama, who prefers to circulate press release-style pictures taken by his own paid photographers.
These official photographs are little more than propaganda, according to AP director of photography Santiago Lyon.

The AP has only been permitted to photograph the president in the Oval Office on two occasions. Both were during his first term. All other pictures of Obama in his office were taken by White House photographers and distributed to the press.

Top Dem Admits: ‘We Knew’

House Democratic whip Steny Hoyer conceded to reporters today that Democrats knew people would not be able to keep their current health care plans under Obamacare and expressed qualified contrition for President Obama’s repeated vows to the contrary.

“We knew that there would be some policies that would not qualify and therefore people would be required to get more extensive coverage,” Hoyer said in response to a question from National Review Online.
