Senate Reaches Tentative Deal On Student Loan Interest Rates

One day after failing to move forward on a one-year extension of low interest rates on federal Stafford student loans, the U.S. Senate has reportedly reached a tentative agreement that tie interest rates to the 10-year Treasury bond, thus resulting in a moderate increase in interest rates for students taking out their first loan this fall.
On July 1, interest rates for subsidized Stafford loans reverted from 3.4% to 6.8%. Given the desire to appease young voters (and their parents) and to not add considerably to the existing $1 trillion mountain of student loan debt in the U.S., lawmakers have been feeling the pressure to figure out a sensible long-term solution.

ABORTION POLL BY LEFT-LEANING HUFFINGTON POST YIELDS VERY INTERESTING RESULTS

Americans overwhelmingly support a national law banning abortion after 20 weeks of pregnancy, according to a new poll by the left-leaning Huffington Post/YouGov.

By a margin of 59 to 30 percent, Americans said they would favor a “federal law that would ban most abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.”

Further, “on a 20-week abortion ban, 70 percent of conflicted respondents said they were in favor of the measure, along with 30 percent of respondents who gave pro-abortion rights responses to both questions and 89 percent of those who gave anti-abortion responses to both,” according to the Huffington Post.

Benghazi Update

Last year's deadly terror attack on the U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, continues to dog the Obama administration. Yesterday it was State Department executive Victoria Nuland's turn. She's the president's nominee for chief envoy to Europe. Nuland was questioned by senators for her role in shaping the now-famous talking points that followed the attack. Nuland would not blame her former boss, then Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Nuland said her role was not to shape policy, but rather to make sure the administration's message was consistent. Senators of both parties agreed Nuland is qualified for the new job.

Federal Funding Announced For Fenwick Beach Pumping

FENWICK ISLAND -- Fenwick Island officials last week announced the federal Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a contract for a vast beach replenishment project to repair the damage caused during Hurricane Sandy last fall and other coastal storms throughout the winter and early spring.

The Army Corps of Engineers has awarded a contract to repair and restore the beaches in Fenwick and other coastal resort towns in Delaware to Great Lakes Dredge and Dock. With the contract awarded last week, a notice to proceed is expected to be issued at any time and a construction schedule will be released. With Fenwick and other Delaware beaches in the height of their seasons, the beach replenishment and restoration projects will likely be scheduled after Labor Day.

During the project, roughly 389,000 cubic yards of sand will be pumped onto the beach in Fenwick from offshore borrow sources and spread over about 6,500 feet of shoreline. The dunes ravaged during Sandy last October and other storms last winter and early spring will also be restored to their pre-storm conditions.

Terrorist Gets Permission From CIA To Build A Vacuum Cleaner

The confessed mastermind of the 9-11 attacks has had a chance to use the skills he went to college for. Khalid Sheikh Mohammed has a bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering. He asked for and got permission from the CIA to design a vacuum cleaner. Mohammed has been confined to a basement prison in Romania for a decade. A former CIA official tells the Associated Press, the CIA wanted Mohammed to retain his sanity after years of waterboarding and solitary confinement. In case he or his colleagues should ever stand trial or testify in court, the officials says, the CIA didn't want them to go nuts. No word on plans to build a better vacuum cleaner.

Study: Youth Attitudes Shift In Great Recession

Drew Miller clearly remembers the day his father was laid off.

Miller, now 25, was a freshman at an Ohio college, full of hope and ready to take on the world. But here was this “red flag … a big wake-up call,” he says. The prosperous years of childhood were over, and his future was likely to be bumpier than he’d expected.

Across the country, others of Miller’s generation heard that same wake-up call as the Great Recession set in. But would it change them? And would the impact last?

The full effect won’t be known for a while, of course. But a new analysis of a long-term survey of high school students provides an early glimpse at ways their attitudes shifted in the first years of this most recent economic downturn.

Federal Hackers Not Welcome

Federal hackers can leave their black T-shirts folded and their red hair gel in the medicine cabinet. They're not welcome at this year's annual DefCon hacking convention. In the aftermath of the Edward Snowden surveillance revelations, the conference founder has politely asked federal attendees to take a year off. Jeff Moss says the other hackers need time to process what they now know about the National Security Agency. DefCon attracts more than 15,000 code jockeys to Las Vegas each year. This year's conference starts Aug. 2.

Maryland Tally 4 Heat-Related Deaths This Summer

I am requesting with this press conference that Gov. Patrick Quinn order the Illinois National Guard (and) the Illinois State Police (to) come to Chicago and work with our mayor Ron (sic) Emanuel to provide safety for the children, especially,” she said at a news conference in Springfield.

Over the holiday weekend, 74 people were shot and 12 killed in Chicago, and Davis says the police don’t have the manpower to make arrests.

Inept Muslim Arsonist Trying To Commit Insurance Fraud Lit Himself On Fire By Mistake

An arsonist has been described by police as ‘inept’ after setting fire to himself while trying to burn down a takeaway.

Rana Kamran later told doctors that his injuries were from cooking oil he had spilled on himself at his home in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, after falling over.

But his DNA was linked to a jacket that was dumped after a blaze at Hafiz takeaway that was so fierce an elderly woman had to be rescued and treated for smoke inhalation from a neighbouring house.

State Prepares For Former Inmates To Sign Up For Medicaid

State officials are working to make sure people being released from prison will sign up for benefits during the 2014 Medicaid expansion.

When the enrollment date for individual health plans rolls around in October, former inmates will also be eligible for health plans offered in state health care exchanges, another part of the “Obamacare” Affordable Care Act implementation. But health advocates say that at best it’s more likely they’ll be signing up for Medicaid, because of their low incomes.

About 9,000 to 10,000 inmates are released from Maryland prisons annually.

“Statistically a majority of the people we see, we help enroll into the Primary health care program,” said Sheila Mackertich, vice president of Health Care Reform Initiatives at Health Care Access Maryland. “Most of our people are either low income or no income.”

We’re The Sweetie-Pie Libertarians

I don’t want to mention names here. This transcends names. This is a phenomenon I’ve witnessed many times over the years. It’s the sweetie-pie libertarian syndrome.

The other day, an aide to a prominent American politician was the subject of an attack in the major media. Why, this person has said some things that all right-thinking people oppose! When he was a radio host, he was provocative! We’ve never observed this phenomenon before! And he thinks there might be some kind of objection to the Lincoln regime! Why, he must support slavery!

(Cue my interview with a zombie.)

Now there are perfectly good reasons one might have to oppose the Lincoln regime. Lysander Spooner opposed it, and Spooner supported John Brown. (I suppose Spooner supported slavery?)

A few thoughts off the top of my head:

(1) Lincoln was a man of his time, which means he viewed large, centralized states as self-justifying goals. This was the age of centralization in Italy, Germany, and Japan, after all. Yes, large, centralized states can abolish slavery. They can also wage horrifying wars, carry out genocides, and erect massive police states. As many people were killed in World War I, the first great war of the world’s centralized states, as there had been slaves in the South.

Above The Law

Fidelity to the rule of law is the centerpiece of a free society. It means that no one is beneath the protection of the law and no one is absolved of the obligation to comply with it. The government may not make a person or a class of persons exempt from constitutional protections, as it did during slavery, nor may it make government officials exempt from complying with the law, as it does today.

Everyone who works for the government in the United States takes an oath to uphold the Constitution and the laws written pursuant to it. In our system of government, we expect that Congress will write the laws, the courts will interpret them and the president will enforce them. Indeed, the Constitution states that it is the president’s affirmative duty to enforce the law. That duty is not an abstract formulation. Rather, it means the president cannot decline to enforce laws with which he disagrees or whose enforcement might cause him or his political allies to lose popularity. It also means the president cannot make up his own version of the law as a substitute for what the Constitution commands or Congress has written.

In the modern era, presidents have rejected the value of the rule of law and instead followed their own political interests. President George W. Bush, for example, while signing into law a federal statute prohibiting the government from reading your mail without a search warrant, boasted that he had no intention of enforcing that law — and we know that he famously did not enforce it.

Mexico Takes The Cake In Overweight List

Mexico heads the list of the world's most overweight industrialized nations. Fat chance you say? Exactly.

Nearly a third of Mexican adults are obese, a recent United Nations Food and Agricultural Organization report says, topping even the United States, which comes in a close second at 31.8%.

The United States has long been a fixture atop the chubby list.

The culprit? High-calorie, low-cost, processed foods and an increasingly sedentary lifestyle as Mexican incomes rise and more people move into metropolitan areas.

1984 Revisited

I just re-read “1984″ by George Orwell, who wrote it in 1949. It’s depressing, to put it mildly, although a few sentences, and even a paragraph or two make sense, and allowed me to see a few things a bit more clearly. You can’t read too many books! I read 30-40 a year, and even that isn’t enough I suspect!

From page 129 (mine is a paperback) comes this sentence or two: “They could be made to accept the most flagrant violations of reality, because they never fully grasped the enormity of what was demanded of them, and were not sufficiently interested in public events to notice what was happening. By lack of understanding, they remained sane. They simply swallowed everything, and what they swallowed did them no harm, because it left no residue behind, just as a grain of corn will pass indigested through the body of a bird.

Isn’t that a perfect description of 95% of Americans, who are literally ‘know nothings,’ and don’t even care? If that were not true, how could Obama ever have been elected? Currently, the vaporous news speak are swallowing every morsel of the George Zimmerman murder trial in Florida. When he is probably found innocent, watch for the black riots, maybe everywhere in the US, but certainly in Florida. Who cares about it? The average American is so fascinated by football, and watching commercial loaded commercial TV, that as Orwell put it, they swallow every Democrat-Obama utterance, and never even give it a thought.

GOVERNOR O’MALLEY ANNOUNCES CONSTRUCTION INVESTMENTS FOR NEW ROUNDABOUT FOR UNIVERSITY OF MARYLAND EASTERN SHORE IN SOMERSET COUNTY

Transportation Act advances start of project which will support nearly 50 jobs

ANNAPOLIS, MD (July 11, 2013) – Governor Martin O’Malley today announced $3.7 million in transportation investments following the passage of the Transportation Infrastructure Investment Act to start construction of a new roundabout at MD 822 (University of Maryland Eastern Shore Boulevard) and MD 675 (Somerset Avenue) in Princess Anne, Somerset County. This project will support nearly 50 jobs and construct a long-awaited safety improvement project for the Eastern Shore.
“Thanks to the better choices we've made to pass the Transportation Act, we can continue to create jobs for our families and advance crucial safety projects like this roundabout across the State,” said Governor O’Malley
Construction of the roundabout is scheduled to begin in late fall 2013. In order to enhance pedestrian safety, this project also will provide new sidewalks along MD 675 from the roundabout to MD 362 (Mt. Vernon Road). Additionally, the project includes drainage improvements and modernizing stormwater treatment facilities.
“The UMES-Somerset Avenue Roundabout Project demonstrates how our citizens, towns, counties and the state government achieve success by working together,” said Senator Jim Mathias“In this project, years of pedestrian safety concerns, as well as traffic issues affecting the residents of Princess Anne and students of UMES, and serious storm water management issues that have been problematic to the region for many years have been remedied. I’m very pleased of our accomplishments and grateful the funds have been made available for this project to become a reality.”
When complete in fall 2014, the new roundabout will enhance the safety of pedestrian and motorists traveling to the University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES), which has approximately 4,500 students. Motorists will continue to have access along UMES Boulevard while the roundabout and related utility work is underway.
“These long-awaited and critical safety improvements are celebrated by all of us who call Princess Anne our home,” said Delegate Charles Otto.  “For more than 20 years, this has been a priority, and I applaud everyone who worked to get the funding to move this project forward.”
The roundabout project will require moving several water and sewer lines. The Town of Princess Anne has applied for a $250,000 Community Development Block Grant from the state to cover the cost of moving the local utility lines to enable the project to move forward. The total cost of the roundabout and sidewalk improvements, including right-of-way, design and construction, is $4.1 million.
“Princess Anne is a growing community and infrastructure sits at the top of our list of things to get done,” said Garland Hayward, President of the Princess Anne County Commissioners. “On behalf of all of Princess Anne and UMES, I can’t express how grateful we are to the State for making these much needed safety improvements possible.”
“Improved access to our campus and the safety of our students, who must walk along roads with no sidewalks, have been long-standing concerns of the University of Maryland Eastern Shore,” said UMES President Juliette Bell. “We are delighted that this project will be underway soon and extremely grateful to Governor O’Malley and the State for making this funding possible.”
Together with the members of the General Assembly, Maryland passed the historic Transportation Infrastructure Investment Act of 2013 during the recent legislative session, which support more than 57,200 jobs and invest an average of $800 million a year at full implementation for transportation projects, and a total of $4.4 billion over the next six years (FY 2014 - FY 2019), to enable Maryland to build a sustainable, 21stcentury transportation system. These better choices already have yielded better results for Marylanders. Recently, Governor O’Malley announced more than $1.5 billion in new funds to advance highway and transit projects throughout the State, including construction of major highway and bridge projects that will improve safety and support economic development.

Second Amendment Revoked: The Unbelievable Reason Why This Army Vet Can’t Own A Gun

An Army veteran in Texas is fighting for his Second Amendment rights after learning that a misdemeanor pot conviction from 1971 has disqualified him from ever owning a gun.

Ron Kelly, who retired from the Army in 1993 after 20 years of service, was recently turned away when he tried to buy a .22-cal rifle at a Wal-Mart in Tomball, Texas, after a computerized background check flagged the 42-year-old arrest. The story was on the front page of the Houston Chronicle on Wednesday.

Kelly said he had forgotten about his minor pot violation from high school — the federal government, on the other hand, has not.

The Army vet spent one night in jail and was given one year of probation. Though he didn’t realize it at the time, he was also apparently stripped of his Second Amendment rights for a lifetime.

Over 400 Softball Teams at Bat for 2013 USSSA World Series

Salisbury, MD – Over 5,000 softball players will soon arrive on Delmarva as the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA) World Series returns to Maryland’s eastern shore.  The three-legged series, spanning from July 17 to Aug. 3 will bring over 400 girls softball teams to the region ranging in age from 10 to 18.  Preliminary estimates suggest the World Series will generate an $8+ million dollar economic impact.

Wicomico County has hosted USSSA events for the last six years, but this year’s World Series surpasses all others in size and scope.  The tournament has added an additional week and seen a spike in participation by 38% with a total of 402 teams currently registered.  Although Wicomico County serves as the tournament’s host, its growth has necessitated an expansion beyond County borders to both fields and overnight accommodations in Ocean City and Worcester County.  Realizing the economic benefits of the World Series, the town, in an unprecedented move, has partnered with Wicomico to assist in footing the $450,000 bill for this year’s tournament.    Area businesses, also realizing the greatness of the tournament’s impact have come on board as sponsors of the event including Pohanka Automotive Group and Pepsi Bottling Ventures.

Despite the hefty price tag, the $8+ million economic impact generated for the community far out ways the cost.  The tournament brings a demand of 16,000 room nights to the Eastern Shore.  Over half of these rooms have been booked through Wicomico County’s online booking system.  Based on the system inventory, hotels in Wicomico County are just about full, and at least 1/8 of bookings have spilled over into the Ocean City area.  In addition to filling hotels, area businesses including restaurants, gas stations, grocery stores, etc. see an uptick in foot traffic brought about by the tournament.

Tournament Dates:
July 17-21:  Tournament play for 10U-12U Open / 10U-14U ‘C’*
July 24-28:  Tournament play for 14U ‘A’ / 14U ‘B’ / 16U-18U ‘C’*
July 29-Aug. 3:  Tournament play for 16U ‘A’ / 16U ‘B’ / 18U ‘Open’ *
*’U’ abbreviation for Under.

The Henry S. Parker Athletic Complex in Salisbury, Md. provides the main fields of play for the series.  Other fields tentatively scheduled for use in Wicomico County include the East Wicomico Little League (Salisbury), Eastside Youth Sports Complex (Willards), Fruitland Recreational Area (Fruitland) and Mason-Dixon Sports Complex (Delmar).  Facilities in Worcester County that may be used include the John Walter Smith Park (Snow Hill), North Worcester Athletic Complex (Berlin), Showell Recreation Complex (Showell) and Stephen Decatur High School / Middle School (Berlin).

Tournament games are open to the public with no admission fee charged.  For additional information on the USSSA World Series, please visitwww.SalisburyChampionships.org. In accordance with USSSA National guidelines, schedules are not released until the start of the tournament.  As they become available, information will be posted to the web site.

Ex Walmart Worker Says She Was Fired For Telling Police About Dog Stuck In Hot Truck

A woman in Ontario, Canada, says she was fired from her job at Walmart earlier this week because she called the police on a customer who had left his dog in a hot car with the windows rolled up — and after she told her boss she’d do it again.
She tells the CBC that she was on her way into work on Tuesday when she saw a customer lock his dog inside the truck and close the windows.

“I said, ‘Is this really happening? I’m going to give him about five or 10 minutes and then I’m going to call the police,’” says the now-former Walmarter. When the man didn’t return, she contacted the police. An officer arrived, took down the license plate number and went into the store to find the vehicle’s owner.

City Considers Emergency Mutual Aid Agreement

SAILSBURY -- Salisbury may be joining a short list of municipalities in Maryland to adopt a standardized public works mutual aid Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for assistance in emergencies.

“MML [Maryland Municipal League] and the Maryland Public Works Association drafted this agreement, their attorneys went through it and they’re really asking municipalities to accept it verbatim,” Salisbury Acting-Public Works Director Amanda Pollack told the City Council last week.

The MoU is not overly restrictive, continued Pollack, and in general exists just to organize responses should a municipality encounter some need to request help from other towns in the state.

Free Bus Trip To Washington To Protest Amnesty Bill

Dear Patriots,

We have joined with the Black American Leadership Alliance, Help Save Maryland, and many other Tea Party groups from across the country to rally in Washington, DC, on Monday, July 15, to protest the Amnesty Bill that the Senate passed. We need to let our congressmen know that we do not want any part of the Amnesty Bill to pass in the House.

President Obama just decided to delay Obamacare until after the 2014 elections. He does not have the authority to do this, but he has done it anyway. What makes anybody think that even if Congress does pass "tough border security measures" that the Obama administration would bother to enforce them?

This amnesty scam needs to be stopped in its tracks. The Republican controlled House needs to not bring up any amnesty/immigration bill. No matter how tough a bill they might pass, it will be rewritten during the reconciliation process. Then any tiny security measures that squeak through will be disregarded by the Obama administration. The House needs to just say NO. Let our executive branch enforce the laws already on the books rather than pass new amnesty measures hiding behind the fig leaf of border enforcement.

We need people to come to DC on Monday, July 15, to remind our congressmen that they do have a spine and should stand firm against the RINO and media pressure to do something.

The free bus will be leaving from Boscov's at the Salisbury Mall at 5:30am, stopping in Cambridge at 6:15am and then at Easton at 6:45am. We will leave DC around 3:00pm to return home. Please call Cathy Keim at 443 880 5912 or email wicomico.patriots@gmail.com to reserve your seat.

Go to www.dcmarchforjobs.com to see a list of all the speakers. Senator Ted Cruz and Col. Allen West are two of the speakers.

Call a friend and encourage them to come along. Let's fill the bus and let our voices be heard in DC.

Paula Deen Comic Book To Live On In Wake Of Major Brand Implosion

Now that Paula Deen’s big business deals have fallen like so many dominos in the wake of her admission to using racist language, it might seem like there aren’t many companies out there eager to sell goods with her name attached. Not so in the world of comics, apparently, as one publisher says it’s going ahead with plans to release the comic book Female Force: Paula Deen in October.

Bluewater Productions announced this week that “despite the recent media hailstorm and public criticism aimed at celebrity chef Paula Deen … it will not change plans to publish its Female Force biography comic book title featuring the embattled TV personality due out this fall.”

We know what you’re thinking — are they actually standing by her or is this whole thing just an excuse to kick her while she’s down? After all, the promo photo does show her rising out of a tub of butter. Not so, the company president tells Reuters.
