Russians Find Mammoth Carcass With Liquid Blood

MOSCOW (AP) -- A perfectly preserved woolly mammoth carcass with liquid blood has been found on a remote Arctic island, fueling hopes of cloning the Ice Age animal, Russian scientists said Thursday.

The carcass was in such good shape because its lower part was stuck in pure ice, said Semyon Grigoryev, the head of the Mammoth Museum, who led the expedition into the Lyakhovsky Islands off the Siberian coast.

"The blood is very dark, it was found in ice cavities bellow the belly and when we broke these cavities with a poll pick, the blood came running out," he said in a statement released by the North-Eastern Federal University in Yakutsk, which sent the team.

Two days before their Memorial Day weekend break, kids from at least three different public schools — Bethune Academy (K-5), Davenport School of the Arts (K-5, middle and high school), and Daniel Jenkins Academy (6-12) — were subjected to iris scans without their parents’ knowledge or consent. The scans are essentially optical fingerprints, which the school intended to collect to create a database of biometric information for school bus security.

One mother took to Facebook to decry the outrageous breach after her son informed her of the unauthorized imaging. She posted a face-saving letter from Polk County Senior Director of Support Services Rob Davis notifying families only after the high-definition eye scans had been conducted.

Gas Prices Expected To Drop During Summer Months

Officials from AAA Mid-Atlantic say gas prices dropped this week during the Memorial Holiday. They believe gas prices will also continue to fall throughout the upcoming summer months.

AAA Mid-Atlantic officials say this week marked the second consecutive year that the average American driver had to paid less per gallon at the pump when filling up for their Memorial Day holiday travel.

On the previous two Memorial Days, the national average was $3.64 per gallon (May 28, 2012) and $3.79 (May 30, 2011).

Annapolis Woman Awarded $800K For Undisclosed Bedbug Infestation

It started with what looked like a rash.

But over time the itching, which began immediately after Faika Shaaban moved into a house-turned-apartment at 1000 West St. in Annapolis, got worse.

For months, the bumps spread, creating scabs and lesions from head to toe. And for months Shaaban, 66, asked her landlord, Cornelius J. Barrett, of Arnold, what could be causing the breakout.

Towson-based attorney Daniel Whitney, representing Shaaban, charged that Barrett said he had no idea — all the while knowing the gray house with black shutters was infested with bedbugs.

Police in Miami say they felt so threatened by a 14-year-old boy’s “body language” and “dehumanizing stares” that they had no choice but to put him in a choke hold and arrest him.

According to reports, Tremaine McMillian was “roughhousing” with a friend when Miami-Dade Police officers approached them and ordered them to stop fighting.

Here’s where things get sketchy.

The officers reportedly realized that there was no actual fighting going on, however, they still asked McMillian to identify where his mother was.

The teen says he did as he was told, but Miami-Dade Police Detective Alvaro Zabaleta argues he refused to cooperate and started walking away.

Baltimore Police Officer Arrested On Drug Charges

BALTIMORE (AP) -- A Baltimore police officer has been arrested, accused of standing watching in uniform while what she believed was a drug deal was conducted.

Federal prosecutors announced a criminal complaint against Ashley Roane on Friday. The complaint accuses her of attempted possession with intent to distribute one kilogram or more of heroin and possession of a firearm in the furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

A spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney's Office said Roane has been arrested.

Volunteers Fear Service Encroachment

The Ocean City Police Commission’s plan to buy military vehicles for water rescue has raised the ire of the Ocean City Volunteer Fire Company, which fears that the move will further encroach on the OCVFC’s rescue responsibilities following an alleged breakdown in communication and several ill-advised rescue attempts during Hurricane Sandy.

OCVFC Chief Bo Duke voiced his concerns to the City Council this week regarding the proposal to buy a surplus military vehicle – either a Humvee or a two-and-a-half ton truck – that could navigate high water and be used for evacuation during flooding events. The idea was recommended to the council last week by the city’s Police Commission.

However, Duke feared that the purchase would further the issues experienced during Hurricane Sandy last fall. The OCVFC, he said, has a number of specially trained personnel with specific equipment such as wetsuits, waders and their own boats specifically outfitted to perform water rescues. But after successfully evacuating a number of stranded people, the fire department stopped receiving such calls for service.

Obama’s ‘Chicago Way

The scandals swirling around the Obama administration have many journalists scratching their heads as to how “hope and change” seem to have been supplanted by “arrogance and fear.” Perhaps it’s time they revisit one of their original premises about Barack Obama: that he wasn’t influenced by the Chicago Daley machine. You know: the machine that boosted his career and whose protégés — including Valerie Jarrett, David Axelrod, Rahm Emanuel, and his wife, Michelle — he brought to Washington with him.

The liberal take on the president was best summed up by Slate magazine’s Jacob Weisberg, who wrote last year that Obama “somehow passed through Chicago politics without ever developing any real connection to it.” It’s true that Obama initially kept some distance from the machine. But by the time he ran for the Senate in 2004, his main political Sherpas were Axelrod, who was then the chief consultant to Mayor Richard M. Daley, and Jarrett, the mayor’s former deputy chief of staff. As Scott Simon of NPR noted: “While calling for historic change globally, [Obama] has never professed to be a reformer locally.” The Daley machine, which evolved over 60 years from a patronage-rich army of worker bees into a corporate state in which political pull and public-employee unions dominate, has left its imprint on Obama. The machine’s core principle, laid out in an illuminating Chicago Independent Examiner primer on “the Chicago Way,” is that at all times elections are too important to be left to chance. John Kass, the muckraking columnist for theChicago Tribune who for years has warned that Obama was bringing “the Chicago way” to Washington, sums up his city like this: “Once there were old bosses. Now there are new bosses. And shopkeepers still keep their mouths shut. Tavern owners still keep their mouths shut. Even billionaires keep their mouths shut.”

Hershey’s Track & Field Games Come To Salisbury

Wicomico County’s Recreation, Parks & Tourism Department will host the Hershey’s Track & Field Games Meet for youth on Thursday, June 13 at 6:00 pm at the Wicomico County Stadium. Hershey’s Track & Field Games have inspired millions of children from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Canada, to experience excellence by being their best while having fun with every run, jump and throw. Hershey’s Track & Field Games is designed to encourage physical fitness while emphasizing participation and sportsmanship among young athletes.

Games are open to boys and girls ages 9-14 years old that will compete in their age group according to the age they will be on December 31, 2013. These youth participants must be a Maryland resident and be able to present legal birth documentation.

Rt. 50 Service Road Dedicated To Bowen, National Hero From Berlin

During a moving, solemn ceremony Monday, the Route 50 service road was formally dedicated as Samuel Bowen Boulevard in memory of the 1983 graduate of Stephen Decatur High School who was killed July 7, 2004, when a rocket-propelled grenade exploded near his vehicle while he was serving with the National Guard in Irag.

According to the Department of Defense, Bowen was the 1,000th soldier to die during Operation Iraqi Freedom and the first native son of Worcester County to lose his life in Iraq.

Four of his military comrades from the 216th Engineer Battalion — who were with him the day he was killed — joined the crowd estimated at more than 200 people. The battalion’s chaplain gave the invocation.

'All in the Family' star Jean Stapleton dies at 90

Jean Stapleton, who played Archie Bunker’s long-suffering wife Edith in the long-running 1970s television series “All in the Family,” died Friday at her New York City home. She was 90.

Stapleton died of natural causes, her family announced Saturday.

She had been a veteran of stage, film and television when she was cast in the CBS sitcom opposite Carroll O’Connor’s loud-mouthed, bigoted Archie Bunker, who often addressed her as "dingbat." She won three Emmys for the role.

“The benign, compassionate presence she developed made my egregious churl bearable,” O'Connor wrote of Stapleton in his 1998 autobiography. He died in 2001.

Federal Policy Would Ban For-Profit Sponsors Who Bring Students To Resort

A provision in the U.S. Immigration Reform Bill could negatively affect Ocean City businesses that hire international students.

The provision would make the program so expensive for employers that they could not hire the students and would make it virtually impossible for sponsoring groups to recruit students for jobs in this country.

Sponsor groups have been bringing thousands of international students to work in the resort and elsewhere in the United States for years. The students work in a myriad of businesses and can often be seen in Boardwalk shops and eateries. Many also work in hotels, often as housekeeping staff.

Report Details Sequestration’s Impact On Assateague

ASSATEAGUE -- With the arrival of another summer season, visitors will flock to Assateague Island National Seashore in the coming weeks and months, but federal budget cuts caused by sequestration could impact the overall experience for visitors to the barrier island.

The Natural Resources Committee’s leading Democrats last week released a rather ominous report on the impact of sequestration on the nation’s vast national parks system, including a large section on an estimated $236,000 in federal budget cuts to Assateague Island National Seashore. The report was prepared by Natural Resources Committee leading Democrat Rep. Edward Markey (D-Mass.), who interviewed national park managers around the country to get an overview of the damage caused by sequestration on a case-by-case basis including Assateague.

According to the study, Assateague, which attracted 2.15 million visitors last year, has had to cut $236,000 from a budget of $5.3 million this year because of sequestration. To meet the target, the park is delaying the replacement of aging or inoperable equipment, is not replacing aging law enforcement vehicles on schedule and is delaying needed engine repairs to a shallow water patrol boat used in search and rescue operations.

The 27th ANNUAL STATEWIDE LAW ENFORCEMENT TORCH RUN involving over 500 Law Enforcement Officers and spanning 160 miles will be held between Wednesday, June 5th and Friday, June 7th.

Special Olympics Delaware provides a year-round program of quality sports training and athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities and/or cognitive delays. A family of over 4,000 volunteers makes this program possible for the more than 3,500 athletes who compete in Special Olympics Delaware. The organization builds sports skills, confidence, strength, motivation and self-esteem ... not just for the athletes, but for everyone involved.

Howard County Democrats Begin Ulman Sendoff

After they declared “Ken Ulman Day” in Howard County Thursday, the four Democrats on the five-member County Council unofficially declared Monday “Ken Ulman and a Secret Partner Day.” This was a joking reference to the not-so-secret announcement planned on Monday by Lt. Gov. Anthony Brown that Howard County Executive Ulman would join his ticket as candidate for lieutenant governor in the 2014 gubernatorial race.

Howard County Democrats returning home from the annual Jefferson-Jackson dinner in Clarksville Thursday night even found a robo-call from Brown on their answering machines inviting them to the announcement on Columbia’s lakefront Monday morning. There would be coffee and doughnuts along with a “a big campaign announcement” of his running mate, promised Brown, who formally declared his run for governor at a rally three weeks ago.

Howard County Democrats were beginning their long sendoff to the term-limited Ulman who had raised more than $2 million in a potential quest to become governor. The party fundraising event honoring Ulman was planned in March, said party chairman Michael McPherson, long before his plans were fully determined.

No More Nude Image

Nude images from airport body scans are a thing of the past.

The Transportation Security Administration has equipped all of its advanced imaging technology units with the required advanced target recognition technology, replacing the nude images produced by backscatter X-ray scanners, TSA Administrator John Pistole says in a May 24 letter (.pdf) to Congress.

TSA was unable to meet the original deadline of June 2012, but beat the extended deadline of May 31, 2013, by 2 weeks, Pistole reports.

He adds that the next generation of advanced imaging technology must include ATR capabilities.

The change was mandated by the FAA Modernization and Reform Act of 2012 to move away from the body-revealing images developed by backscatter X-ray scanners in lieu of more generic body shapes. Rapiscan, maker of the full-body scanners, failed to meet the deadline for creating less revealing images; TSA has canceled the company's contract.

Council Clarifies Military Vehicle Acquisition; Volunteer Chief Questions Move

OCEAN CITY – Emotions were stirred among emergency personnel this week following discussions over the resort possibly acquiring surplus military vehicles to be used during emergency weather incidents.

Earlier this month, during a police commission meeting, Ocean City Police Department captains and city officials discussed the opportunity to acquire military surplus vehicles, either a Humvee or Deuce and a Half, to be used in emergency situations, such as rescue missions during flooding caused by hurricanes or other major storms.

The federal government offers surplus military vehicles to municipalities free of charge and many jurisdictions have taken advantage of the opportunity. The only costs associated are to transport the vehicle to the destination and any changes or maintenance to be conducted after acquisition.

Rocket Launch Scheduled June 4 From Wallops

WALLOPS ISLAND, VA – A Black Brant XII suborbital rocket carrying the Cosmic Infrared Background ExpeRiment (CIBER)is scheduled for launch between 11 and 11:59 p.m. EDT, June 4, from NASA’s launch range at the Wallops Flight Facility in Virginia.

The backup launch days are June 5 through 10. The rocket may be visible to residents in the mid-Atlantic region.

With CIBER, scientists will be studying when the first stars and galaxies formed in the universe and how brightly they burned their nuclear fuel.

Jamie Bock, CIBER principal investigator from the California Institute of Technology, said, “The objectives of the experiment are of fundamental importance for astrophysics: to probe the process of first galaxy formation. The measurement is extremely difficult technically.”

The trooper activated his emergency lights and approached the driver’s window and immediately could smell the strong odor of an alcoholic beverage emanating from the driver. The above driver failed field sobriety test, was placed under arrest and transported to the Berlin Barrack, where the driver submitted to an intoximeter test. The driver was issued the above citations and released to a friend.

I was sitting back watching TV with my Grandson yesterday when a commercial came on. I missed the main portion of the commercial and I asked, what show was that? My Grandson said, I can't say it. I said, what? He said, I can spell it. OK, what was it. He said, H-E-L-L's Kitchen.

I said, you can say HELL. Oh no grandpa, that's a curse word, we can't say that in school. I said, your kidding me, right? I said, so when you say, some people go to Heaven and some people go to Hell, your not allowed to say that. Oh no, the Teacher says, some people go up there, (pointing towards the sky) and some people go down there, (pointing towards the ground). 

Now look, we've raised our Grandson pretty darned well. He knows what he can and can't say and I can honestly tell you with one hand on the Bible, he has NEVER cursed in my presence in his entire lifetime. 

I guess the word HELL is a gateway to other curse words and out of control children, eh????? I was always raised, never use God's name in vein. Not that it's right but there's a time and a place to use a curse word. Look, I'm from New York and you better believe if I hit a finger with a hammer I'm NOT going to say Golly Gee, that really stings. 

Nevertheless, I'd enjoy hearing your opinion on this matter. At this point, (to me personally) the liberal teaching of our children in this manor has gone too far. Up here and down there, I don't think so.

At Least 5 Dead, Dozens Injured After Tornadoes Sweep Through Oklahoma City Area

Deadly tornadoes touched down Friday west of Oklahoma City, killing at least five, while trapping motorists and crumbling cars and tractor-trailers.

The Oklahoma Highway Patrol said troopers found the bodies of a mother and a child near a vehicle along Interstate 40 west of the city. The state medical examiner's office said at least 3 others were killed in area's suburbs Friday.

Hospitals in the area said about 50 people were hurt, including five critically. Amy Elliott, a spokeswoman for the state medical examiner, said early Saturday that she had no immediate word of additional fatalities.

WHY DOES THE FBI’S DOMESTIC TERRORISM TASK FORCE WANT TO TALK TO DIRECTOR OF PRO-LIFE PREGNANCY CENTER?

Agents with the FBI’s Joint Domestic Terrorism Task Force have reportedly informed Chris Slatterly, national director of Expectant Mother Care (EMC) FrontLine Pregnancy Centers, they would like to talk with him.

Slatterly told LifeSiteNews.com that the agents would only tell him they wanted to meet him “for a mutually beneficial relationship.” EMC is a New York-based pro-life organization that seeks to help expectant mothers and prevent abortions.

“In other words, if I don’t meet with them, it will not be beneficial for me…I’m not sure what I’m going to get out of it,” Slatterly joked.

The obvious question most people are wondering is: Why is the FBI office tasked with investigating domestic terrorism spending its time demanding a meeting with the director of a pro-life organization?

The answer is unclear at this point.

Vets Fume Over Walter Reed Furloughs

WASHINGTON - The trickle-down effects of sequestration, budget cuts and federal worker furloughs has made its way to Walter Reed's civilian workforce. And the news that caregivers will be sent home instead of tending to wounded warriors has one veterans group fuming.

WTOP has confirmed that workers at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda have received notices of furloughs, which are set to take affect on July 8.

The center released a statement Friday saying that more than 2,500 civilians work at Walter Reed out of a total staff of 7,000 people, including military personnel and contractors.

OCPD Reminds Citizens of the New Skateboarding Rules

Ocean City Police would like to remind citizens of the changes to the skateboarding rules during the summer season. On October 1, 2012, Ocean City Mayor and City Council approved an amendment to the town’s skateboarding ordinance. Since then, skateboarding is permitted on the boardwalk during the same times as bicycling. While skateboarding is still prohibited throughout the rest of the city with the exception of the skate park, skateboarders now have another option.

Beginning on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, skateboarding is permitted between the hours of 2:00 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. of the same day. During Springfest and Sunfest (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday), skateboarding is permitted between 2:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. of the same day. Outside of the summer season, skateboarding is permitted on the boardwalk with no time restrictions.

OCPD reminds skateboarders that stunts and tricks are still not allowed on the boardwalk. Anyone with questions about the skateboarding amendment should call OCPD at 410-723-6610.

Driver Fails to Yield to Pedestrian in Crosswalk

On May 30, 2013, at approximately 1 p.m. Ocean City Police responded to a vehicle collision involving a pedestrian at the intersection of Baltimore Avenue and 17^th Street. 

The driver of the vehicle, Arun Chainani, 44, of Arlington, VA, was driving westbound on 17^th Street and was waiting to make a left turn onto southbound Baltimore Avenue. Chainani, who was yielding to a vehicle traveling eastbound in the intersection, attempted to make the left turn but failed to yield the right-of-way to a pedestrian that was in the crosswalk.

The pedestrian was treated by Ocean City EMS and transported to Atlantic General Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Chainani was cited by Ocean City Police with failing to exercise due care to avoid a pedestrian collision.

This Is What Happens When You Fear Free Speech

Perhaps these Obama administration scandals (popularly referred to as “so-called scandals” in liberal media circles) lack the explosive drama of a Watergate and the entertainment value of Bill Clinton’s peccadilloes, but for those who are less obsessed with the political consequences and more troubled by constitutional fallout, there’s plenty to see.

To begin with, the Internal Revenue Service scandal isn’t just about the abuse of power; it’s a byproduct of an irrational fear of free speech, which seems to permeate much of the left these days. The unprecedented targeting of conservatives wasn’t incidental to this administration as much as it was an intuitive extension of the paranoia the left has about unfettered political expression.

Democrats, after all, hadn’t been merely accusing political opponents of being radical twits the past four years; they’d been accusing them of being corrupt,illegitimate radical twits. The president endlessly argued that these unregulated groups were wrecking the process at the behest of well-heeled enablers rather than engaging in genuine debate.

Heck, some of these funders may even be foreign nationals! Senators called for investigations. Obama called out the Supreme Court during a State of the Union speech for defending the First Amendment in the Citizens United case (which prohibits the government from restricting political independent expenditures by groups). The New York Times editorial board (and others) advocated the cracking down by the IRS on conservative dissenters and getting to the bottom of the anarchy.
