WASHINGTON (AP) - Federal workers who are furloughed because of the government shutdown are filing for unemployment benefits.
Najla Haywood, a spokeswoman for the D.C. Department of Employment Services, says all initial claims for unemployment should be filed online due to increased demand.
The agency says it's processing claims, but there might be delays for federal workers in order to verify their employment status while their offices are closed. There is a one-week waiting period before benefits are paid.

This should become a new standard for everyone, because everyone else can't file for unemployment to cover furlough days.
ReplyDeleteWhat will this do to the unemployment numbers!
ReplyDeleteThis shutdown is going to cost us more than the republicans think it will save.
ReplyDeleteanonymous 6:03, it's about time the republican party did something that cost taxpayers money. You guys have owned the position for so freaking long, funny how now you'll point a finger our way all of a sudden.
ReplyDeleteTHANK THE democrats for the shutdown and Unemployment. The Republicans are just voting with the people, as they should.
ReplyDeleteThese leaches are no unemployed. They are furloughed because their bosses are idiots. Give me a break.
ReplyDeleteThe longer this goes, the more we, the taxpayers are seeing the bloat in the federal government and all the waste we pay for hourly, daily, weekly, monthly.
ReplyDeleteIt is past time that government trim the fat from the payroll and work more effiently and productively. That change in itself will save money and and create an atmosphere of cooperation among the House, Senate, and the Administration.
Maybe for once, work would actually get done, be done on time, and be done correctly the first time. What a novel idea--try it Congress, you might like it!!!
Don't feel too bad for those vacationed workers. They will receive all back pay when they resume their backbreaking schedule.
ReplyDeleteI was there the last time this happened. You can forget about the Federal Employees getting unemployment as when they return for work they will all be issued backpay for the time they were furloughed. That's right - I will say it again, ALL OF THE FEDERAL WORKERS THAT WERE FURLOUGHED WILL RECEIVE BACKPAY.
ReplyDeleteIN OTHER WORDS THEY WILL BE PAID FOR SITTING HOME ON THE ---SSS.
This will happen - while the rest of America will be deemed second class citizens. How do I know - because I was there in the winter of 1995 - and I can assure you that I am telling you the gospel truth.

ReplyDeleteGood for them. I just wish they would stop whining and telling everyone how important they really are.
MILLIONS have been out of work for YEARS and have no income. Yet they try to make us feel like we are beholden to them for all the IMPORTANT work they do for us.
I have seen some of these rude workers in D.C. Some of them work for the fed because they couldn't get a job anywhere else.
Disband the TSA, EPA and a few other NON-ESSENTIAL agencies and their workers and save some money and make the fed a little smaller.
The shutdown is actually a good thing. The longer it last the more Americans will find ways to function without government and willfind that most of the nonsense isn't really needed.
ReplyDelete9:13-but will they be required to pay back their unemployment after they get their backpay?
