Arlington National Cemetery Expansion Plans Threaten Old Trees

A hotly-debated plan to add more burial spaces at Arlington National Cemetery moved another step closer Saturday, but environmentalists are worried about the impact the expansion will have on trees.

“We owe them a place where they can have eternal rest,” says Raymond Houck, a U.S. Army veteran.

The cemetery spans 624 acres of sacred ground with 400,000 graves.

“Every year they find this to be a special and moving place and I want to keep that for everybody,” says Carol Harvey of Arlington.

  1. Seems to me that going around the tree is a more beautiful thing to do. We just buried Dad who was a 95 year old Veteran on WWII next to a giant oak in a forested hilly cemetery. It was beautiful, even during the snow that was falling!

    1. The graves in Arlington are aligned by laser. It won't work. But I agree trees add beauty

  2. Well, someone needs to go out and buy some 20 year old survey equipment that can plot around an obstacle and line them up within 1/64 of an inch. We in the building trades have had this stuff for years and do it every day!
