ASSATEAGUE -- Assateague Island was slowly coming back to life, at least from a human standpoint, yesterday after Hurricane Sandy made her presence felt early this week, but the barrier island, like most coastal areas, took a good beating.
Two days after the last vestiges of Sandy cleared out of the area, the Assateague Island State Park reopened for visitors yesterday morning on a limited basis, while the Assateague Island National Seashore remained closed. The National Seashore was expected to open to the public on a limited basis by Friday morning.
The beaches at Assateague suffered considerable erosion with the front of the man-made and natural dune line sheared off on the ocean side leaving sand fences, railings and other structures completely erased or dangling from their supports in many cases. According to Assateague Island National Seashore spokesperson Rachelle Daigneault, the heavy surf breached the dune line in some spots and the ocean was still flowing behind the dunes into park areas during high tides.

Bleeding The Taxpayer: An Old Technology Dolled Up As New
On September 14, 1899, Henry Bliss stepped off a streetcar at West 74th Street and Central Park West in New York and got run over by a taxi. A plaque points out that it was the first automobile fatality in the “Western Hemisphere.” The taxi was an electric vehicle. As were 90% of the taxis in New York City and about 30% of all cars sold in the US. Electric cars aren’t exactly new. Yet, the government is bleeding the taxpayer to advance the technology, create jobs at a cost of $158,556 per job, and fund executive bonuses.
Today, Republican Senators Chuck Grassley of Iowa and John Thune of South Dakota lambasted [11] the Obama administration for the $2 billion it handed to 29 companies to manufacture advanced batteries for electric cars. It was part of the bipartisan $787 boondoggle stimulus bill of 2009 that performed mind-boggling wonders in the US economy.
The senators were particularly irked by the facts surrounding one of the major recipients, the poster boy for the program, battery maker A123 Systems, which filed for bankruptcy two weeks ago.
In response to the bankruptcy, the Department of Energy touted the results of its advanced battery program, claiming it had created jobs for “thousands of American workers.” When Grassley pushed the DOE for documentation, he found out that it had created 12,613 jobs—at a cost of “$158,556 per job, including jobs that were later cut,” Grassley explained. And the jobs at A123? They cost the taxpayer $317,435 per job.
“Adding insult to injury, A123 executives reportedly are seeking to retain $4.2 million in bonuses through the bankruptcy process,” he said. That’s why boondoggles are so popular; somebody does get the money.
Yet, the first electric car hit the road in Scotland in the 1830s. As the technology matured, electric cars gave rise to a whole industry. Their toughest competitors? Steam-powered cars: they had greater range and more power. And they set speed records—a marketing advantage.
JUDGE COULD FORCE MENTALLY DISABLED NEVADA WOMAN TO HAVE ABORTION
Sadly, tales of forced abortion are all too common in countries like China, where a one-child policy set by the government determines families’ reproductive choices. And in Nazi Germany, people with mental or physical handicaps were subjected to involuntary sterilizations during one of the darkest periods in world history.
But you don’t expect instances of potential forced abortion to come out of the United States of America.
However, LifeNews.com reports in Nevada, “the life of an 11-week-old unborn baby and the future of his or her 32-year-old mother hang in the balance as a judge considers whether or not to order the woman to undergo an abortion and sterilization against her will.”
MORE ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINES CHANGING ROMNEY VOTES TO OBAMA: WE LOOKED INTO IT AND HERE’S WHAT A VENDOR TOLD US
Last week, TheBlaze brought you a story from a North Carolina voting precinct using electronic voting machines that was already experiencing issues where votes for GOP candidate Mitt Romney were being changed to Democratic candidate Barack Obama. Now, it’s allegedly happening again, this time in both Kansas and Ohio — and we talked to a vendor supporting the machines about the issue.
Nancy from Topeka, Kan., who asked that her last name not be used for reasons pertaining to her husband’s work, told TheBlaze she fears if voters aren’t double checking their selections, they’ll be “robbed of their vote.”
Nancy explained that while her husband was casting a vote for Romney, the touchscreen highlighted Obama.
Smugglers' SUV gets stuck atop Calif. border fence
YUMA, Ariz. (AP) -- Suspected smugglers who tried to use ramps to drive an SUV over a 14-foot-tall border fence had to abandon their plan when the Jeep became stuck on top of the barrier, authorities said Wednesday.
Agents patrolling the U.S.-Mexico border near the Imperial Sand Dunes in California's southeast corner spotted the Jeep Cherokee teetering atop the fence early Tuesday, Border Patrol spokesman Spencer Tippets said. The vehicle was perched about five miles west of the Colorado River and the Arizona state line.
Two smugglers on the Mexican side of the border were trying to free the Jeep when the agents approached, Tippets said. They ran further into Mexico and escaped.
SECRET CABLE WARNED CONSULATE IN BENGHAZI WAS UNPREPARED TO DEFEND AGAINST ‘COORDINATED ATTACK’
Less than a month before heavily armed terrorists overwhelmed the U.S. Mission in Benghazi and killed U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans, the compound held an “emergency meeting” because to al-Qaeda had training camps set up in Benghazi and the consulate could not withstand a “coordinated attack,” Fox News reports, citing a classified cable.
The Aug. 16 cable marked “SECRET” indicated that the State Department’s senior security officer, or the RSO, did not think the U.S. compound could withstand an sophisticated attack — like the one that occurred on 9/11.
“RSO (Regional Security Officer) expressed concerns with the ability to defend Post in the event of a coordinated attack due to limited manpower, security measures, weapons capabilities, host nation support, and the overall size of the compound,” the cable says.
Halloween-Colored Lobster Caught Off Mass. Coast
BOSTON (AP) -- A Massachusetts fisherman has caught a creepy-looking lobster that's colored to match Halloween.
The New England Aquarium says the 1-pound female lobster has an orange side and a black side, with the colors split perfectly down the middle.
Marine officials say such coloration is estimated to occur once in every 50 million lobsters.
'Even Momma Got Outta House To Loot New Shirt': Looters Brag on Twitter
- Police have arrested 13 people in New York City on suspicion of looting
- Looters have especially targeted Queens and Brooklyn, some even posting photos of their bounty
- National Guard deployed 1,175 troops to protect New York City and Long Island amid fears
- Borough President has begged for more troops to be deployed to storm-ravaged South Brooklyn
- A mob of more than 50 thieves rampaged through Coney Island, stealing alcohol, flat-screen TVs and even diapers or Kit-Kats
Several brazen thugs have robbed their neighbors and their local shops of everything from basic food stuffs to expensive electronics and they are taking to Twitter to broadcast their spoils.
'Check out this laptop I scored,' SevenleafB tweeted earlier today. 'It's easy just reach out an grab it.' It appears the looters are organizing through the hashtag #SANDYLOOTCREW.

Officials: Skimming Scheme Stole $600K+ From 500 in Md.
More than 500 Maryland residents were victims of an elaborate international scheme that involved thieves who gained access to their bank accounts through area ATMs, and while some of the culprits were arrested, 11 News I-Team reporter David Collins said there are ways for people to avoid similar schemes.
The international skimming scheme netted more than $600,000 for the suspects, who are all from Bulgaria, and they got away with it for more than a year, Collins reported.
U.S. Attorney Rod Rosenstein said he considers the case a fairly sophisticated crime.
Maryland’s Question 7 On Gaming Basically A Matter Of Whom To Believe
Supporters of a Maryland ballot initiative to expand gambling have touted it as a boon for education funding, but opponents say that claim is just a bluff.
Ballot Question 7 would legalize table games at the state’s casinos and allow a new gambling facility in Prince George’s County. Legislative analysts project it would generate an extra $713 million a year by 2019 — $199 million of which would go to the state’s Education Trust Fund.
But opponents and budget analysts say the trust fund does not actually supplement school spending. Instead, it frees up general funds that would have otherwise gone to education, meaning that it has zero net effect on overall education spending.
Meteorologist Joe Bastardi Blasts Al Gore’s Claims That Global Warming Caused Hurricane Sandy as “Stunningly Ignorant or Stunningly Deceptive”
Wednesday on The O’Reilly Factor, two weather experts debated Al Gore’s claims that global warming was to blame for Hurricane Sandy’s wrath. Gore said, “The storms are getting stronger. The stronger storms are getting more frequent. And you know, this is the second time in two years that part of Manhattan has been shut down … But the evidence is now so overwhelming.”
Joe Bastardi, chief meteorologist at WeatherBell Analytics calls Gore’s claims “stunningly ignorant or stunningly deceptive.” According to Bastardi, such storms are nothing new, “In the 1950s […] 10 major hurricanes ran the eastern seaboard. Six hit the Carolinas northward in two years.”

Researchers Gauging Sandy's Impact on Chesapeake
SOLOMONS, Md. (AP) - Researchers are fanning out across the Chesapeake to see what Sandy has wrought.
So far, indications are the impact has not been as great as last fall when a pair of tropical storms caused widespread flooding throughout the northeast that dumped mud, debris and sewage into the bay. Chesapeake Bay Foundation scientist Beth McGee says the high flows that accompanied tropical storms Irene and Lee last fall haven't materialized following Sandy.
GOVERNOR O’MALLEY ISSUES EXECUTIVE ORDER FOR MARYLANDERS UNABLE TO APPLY FOR AN ABSENTEE BALLOT DUE TO HURRICANE SANDY
“From National Guard members assisting residents in Garrett County to residents displaced from their homes on the Eastern Shore, everyone should have the opportunity to cast their vote,” said Governor O’Malley.
The Executive Order (1) allows election officials to accept absentee ballot applications that are received by mail today and (2) permits voters who are out of their county of residence due to Hurricane Sandy (e.g., National Guard members, utility workers, first responders, voters who sought temporary shelter, etc.) to make a late application for an absentee ballot.
Benghazi Blunder: Obama Unworthy Commander-In-Chief
U.S. Ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other Americans died in a well-planned military assault on their diplomatic mission in Benghazi seven weeks ago, the anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. So why are details surfacing, piecemeal, only now?
The Obama administration sat by doing nothing for seven hours that night, ignoring calls to dispatch help from our bases in Italy, less than two hours away. It has spent the past seven weeks stretching the story out, engaging in misdirection and deception involving supposed indigenous outrage over an obscure anti-Muslim video, confident that with the aid of a docile press corps this infamous climax to four years of misguided foreign policy can be swept under the rug, at least until after Tuesday's election.
Obama’s Inauguration Reverend: All Whites Are Going To Hell
All white people are going to hell, longtime African-American civil rights advocate Rev. Joseph Lowery told an audience at a get-out-the-vote event held Oct. 27 in Georgia.
Lowery, who gave the benediction at the January 2009 inauguration of President Barack Obama, told the audience of up to 300 African-Americans “that when he was a young militant, he used to say all white folks were going to hell. Then he mellowed and just said most of them were. Now, he said, he is back to where he was,” according to an Oct. 31 report in the Monroe County Reporter newspaper.
“I don’t know what kind of a n—– wouldn’t vote with a black man running,” Lowery also told the audience in the St. James Baptist Church in Forsyth, Ga., according to the Reporter.

Three Arrested For Salisbury Murder
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
11/1/2012
11/1/2012
THREE ARRESTED FOR SALISBURY MURDER
(SALISBURY, MD) – Maryland state troopers from special fugitive and gang enforcement teams today arrested three people who are charged with the murder of one man and attempted murder of another during an apparent robbery in Wicomico County late Sunday night.
The three arrested are identified as Deyamah O. Fisher, 19, whose last known address was in the 800-block of East Church Street, Salisbury, Tevin D. Blake, 20, of the 900-block of Lake Street, Salisbury, and Gerard Williams Jr., 17, whose last known address was in the 400-block of Camden Avenue, Salisbury. After consultation with the Wicomico County State’s Attorney’s Office, Maryland State Police Homicide Unit investigators applied for and obtained warrants charging each suspect with first degree murder, second degree murder, armed robbery, first degree assault, second degree assault, use of a handgun during the commission of a felony, wearing/carrying a handgun, attempted first degree murder, attempted second degree murder, attempted armed robbery, attempted first degree assault and attempted second degree assault.
All three suspects were arrested early this morning after being located by the Maryland State Police State Apprehension Team, the Gang Enforcement Unit, who were assisted by Salisbury Police Department officers. Fisher and Blake were arrested at separate apartments in the Berlin area and Williams was arrested near Salisbury.
The suspects will be transported to the Wicomico County Detention Center central booking unit for processing. They are expected to have an initial appearance before a court commissioner later today.
The deceased victim is identified as Andreas Aquiler, 23, of the 1000-block of Margaret Street, Salisbury, Md. An autopsy by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore determined Aquiler’s cause of death was multiple gunshot wounds and the manner of death was homicide.
The wounded victim is identified as Edgar Alvardo, 16, of Salisbury, Md. He remains hospitalized.
Shortly after 11:30 p.m. on October 28, 2012, officers from the Salisbury Police Department responded to the 1000-block of Margaret Street for a report of a shooting. When officers arrived, they found Aquiler and Alvardo lying wounded on or near the front porch of the home.
The preliminary investigation indicates the victims were on their front porch when a group of six to eight African American males were walking down the street. Four of those males separated from the group and walked toward the victims. Two of those four males approached the victims and demanded money. Both of those suspects were armed. The shootings occurred during the robbery.
The Maryland State Police Homicide Unit, with the assistance of the Salisbury Police Department, Wicomico Bureau of Investigation, the Wicomico County State’s Attorney’s Office, the State Police Gang Enforcement Unit and the State Police State Apprehension Team, has continued the investigation around the clock since initially requested by Chief Barbara Duncan. Investigators conducted dozens of interviews, reviewed evidence, obtained and served search warrants, and used other investigative techniques to move the investigation forward.
During the investigation, investigators from the Maryland State Police and the Salisbury Police Department developed probable cause to obtain charges for the suspects. They also recovered two firearms that may have been at the scene of the shootings. The firearms will be forwarded to the Maryland State Police Forensic Sciences Division laboratory for testing.
The investigation into the murder is continuing and additional arrests are possible. Salisbury Police Department detectives are continuing a potentially related investigation into area robberies and home invasions that had been occurring in the area prior to the murder.

Two-Thirds Of Jobs Go To Immigrants
Two-thirds of those who have found employment under President Obama are immigrants, both legal and illegal, according to an analysis that suggests immigration has soaked up a large portion of what little job growth there has been over the past three years.
The Center for Immigration Studies is releasing the study Thursday morning, a day ahead of the final Labor Department unemployment report of the campaign season, which is expected to show a sluggish job market more than three years into the economic recovery.
That slow market, combined with the immigration numbers, could explain why Mr. Obama and Republican nominee Mitt Romney have struggled to find a winning jobs message in some of the country’s hardest-hit postindustrial regions.

Facilities Bought Drugs From Company Involved In Meningitis Outbreak
The Food and Drug Administration released a new list of more than 3,000 hospitals that bought drugs from the company at the center of a nationwide fungal meningitis outbreak, including 89 facilities in Maryland.
The drugs bought by Maryland facilities from the New England Compounding facility include those other than the steroid that has been linked to the meningitis outbreak that has sickened 308 people and killed 23 in 17 states.
In Maryland 17 people have been sickened and 1 has died.
The new list includes regional hospital giant University of Maryland Medical Center, Mercy Medical Center, Saint Joseph Medical Center, Northwest Hospital and Katzen Eye Group, among others.
Post-Sandy Home Damage May Be Covered by Insurance
Officials with the Maryland Insurance Administration said no special hurricane deductibles apply when it comes to Superstorm Sandy.
The reason? The National Weather Service did not issue a hurricane warning, which means homeowners only have to pay their standard deductible to fix any damage.
The cleanup is under way from Sandy. Damage is limited to isolated pockets around Baltimore, such as the Westside neighborhood dealing with a massive downed tree, damaging several neighbors' property.

Hurricane Sandy Buckles N.C. 12 On Hatteras Island
HATTERAS ISLAND, N.C.
Hurricane Sandy left N.C. 12 rippled and bubbled, transforming portions of the highway north of Rodanthe into a curling ribbon of asphalt sliced open between its yellow lines.
The highway was Hurricane Sandy's casualty just as it was Irene's in 2011. Though Sandy spared much of the Outer Banks the costly wind and flood damage of previous storms, it cleaved Hatteras islanders' only roadway to the mainland.
Emergency ferries from Rodanthe to Stumpy Point were to begin regular runs today.
New York Aquarium Goes On Life Support
The New York Aquarium may have to evacuate its 12,000 water-dependent creatures—from hulking walruses and sharks to turtles and teeny fish—if power isn't restored to the Coney Island, Brooklyn, facility soon.
"We are at a very critical period," said a spokeswoman for the Wildlife Conservation Society, which runs the institution. However, she said there was no definite timetable for making the decision.
She added that she was unsure if any of the animals died because of the serious flood damage the institution sustained during Superstorm Sandy, when sea water broke over the boardwalk. Press reports said that Mitik, a 236-pound walrus pup that recently came to live at the aquarium survived the storm. He is one of three walruses at the facility; the two others are adults weighing between 400 and 500 pounds each. The aquarium also has five sharks that would presumably be difficult to relocate. It's also home to otters, penguins, turtles and sea lions.
Maryland Ranked 47th State In Beer Drinking
A small group of servers huddle around the bar inside R.J. Bentley’s. It’s Halloween night, and hordes of costumed students will soon pour into the “filling station.”
But when they do, they are less likely to go for a beer than their out-of-state peers, according to a report released last month by The Beer Institute, a lobbying group that has been tracking beer consumption data for nearly a decade. The organization ranked this state 47th in beer consumption in 2011, the most recent data available, stating of-age residents imbibe 23.3 gallons of beer per year. According to several Bentley’s servers, the data isn’t far off from what they see on a regular basis.
“Here at Maryland in general, the bars are more popular than house parties, which is where people consume more beer,” said sophomore government and politics major Kate Scruggs.
But the low ranking shocked other employees, such as sophomore kinesiology major Carly Solow, who wondered how Maryland compared to other states.
Virginia Bombings Suspect Arrested in Montana

The pipe bombs thrown at police did explode, but there's no word of injuries.
HOW DID THEY KNOW?
SOMETHING IN THE UNIVERSE THAT IS MUCH GREATER AND DEEPER THAN HUMAN INTELLIGENCE.
THE ELEPHANT'S JOURNEY TO PAY RESPECT, BUT HOW DID THEY KNOW?
Lawrence Anthony, a legend in South Africa and author of 3 books including
the bestseller The Elephant Whisperer, bravely rescued wildlife and
rehabilitated elephants all over the globe from human atrocities, including
the courageous rescue of Baghdad Zoo animals during US invasion in 2003.. On March 7, 2012 Lawrence Anthony died.
He is remembered and missed by his wife, 2 sons, 2 grandsons and numerous elephants.
Two days after his passing, the wild elephants showed up at his home led by two large matriarchs.
Separate wild herds arrived in droves to say goodbye to their beloved man-friend.
A total of 31 elephants had patiently walked over 12 miles to get to his
South African House.
Witnessing this spectacle, humans were obviously in awe not only because of the
supreme intelligence and precise timing that these elephants sensed about Lawrence 's
passing, but also because of the profound memory and emotion the beloved animals
evoked in such an organized way:
Walking slowly - for days - Making their way in a solemn one-by-one queue from their
habitat to his house.
Lawrence's wife, Francoise, was especially touched, knowing that the elephants
had not been to his house prior to that day for well over 3 years!
But yet they knew where they were going.
The elephants obviously wanted to pay their deep respects, honoring their friend
who'd saved their lives - so much respect that they stayed for 2 days 2 nights without eating anything..
Then one morning, they left, making their long journey back home............
