Medicare Fines Over Hospitals' Readmitted Patients

If you or an elderly relative have been hospitalized recently and noticed extra attention when the time came to be discharged, there's more to it than good customer service.

As of Monday, Medicare will start fining hospitals that have too many patients readmitted within 30 days of discharge due to complications. The penalties are part of a broader push under President Barack Obama's health care law to improve quality while also trying to save taxpayers money.

About two-thirds of the hospitals serving Medicare patients, or some 2,200 facilities, will be hit with penalties averaging around $125,000 per facility this coming year, according to government estimates.

Data to assess the penalties have been collected and crunched, and Medicare has shared the results with individual hospitals. Medicare plans to post details online later in October, and people can look up how their community hospitals performed by using the agency's "Hospital Compare" website.

Chavez to Obama: I'd Vote For You, And You For Me

With both presidents facing tight re-election fights, Venezuela's Hugo Chavezgave a surprise endorsement to Barack Obama on Sunday - and said the U.S. leader no doubt felt the same.
"I hope this doesn't harm Obama, but if I was from the United States, I'd vote for Obama," the socialist Chavez said of a man he first reached out to in 2009 but to whom he has since generally been insulting.
Chavez is running for a new six-year term against opposition challenger Henrique Capriles, while Obama seeks re-election in November against Republican candidate Mitt Romney. Venezuela's election is next weekend.

DAMON'S 'PROMISED LAND' USES MONEY FROM OPEC MEMBER TO TRASH AMERICAN OIL COMPANIES

Matt Damon's new movie, "Promised Land," is a propaganda piece that trashes fracking techniques used by American oil companies.

The movie presents American oil companies as greedy corporations that trash and pollute   small-town America in attempts to extract oil and gas from shale formations. Yet, because fracking has been proven environmentally sound in the real world, the movie suggests oil companies might be planting "doom-saying" environmentalists in order to undercut the legitimacy of environmental voices all-together.

Malvo Felt Like 'Worst Piece Of Scum'

Convicted D.C. sniper Lee Boyd Malvo said in a newspaper interview published Sunday that the devastated reaction of a victim's husband made him feel like "the worst piece of scum."

Malvo expresses remorse in the interview with The Washington Post (wapo.st/SrLk9I) and urged the families of victims to try and forget about him and his partner John Allen Muhammad so they can move on. Tuesday marks the 10th anniversary of the beginning of the deadly spree in the Washington area carried out by Malvo and John Allen Muhammad. The pair has been linked to 27 shootings across the country, including 10 fatal attacks in the Washington area.

CRITICS TRASH 'WON'T BACK DOWN' AS CONSERVATIVE 'PROPAGANDA'

The movie “Won’t Back Down,” which stars Maggie Gyllenhaal and Viola Davis as reformers trying to battle education bureaucrats and teachers unions to help children, has irked progressive movie critics.

Reviewers have been dismissing the film as “propaganda,” trying to de-legitimize it by highlighting the fact that a conservative funded it.
In Time  , Mary Polis mentions “Won’t Back Down” was produced by Walden Media and made her “annoyed.”

BULLIED TEEN ‘HONORED’ AT SUPPORT SHE RECEIVED AFTER CRUEL HOMECOMING PRANK: ‘HAPPY AS CAN BE’

A Michigan community cheered on a 16-year-old sophomore – the victim of an apparent prank by classmates – as she took her place with other members of her high school’s homecoming court.
Whitney Kropp was escorted by her father and grandfather onto the Ogemaw Heights High School football field Friday night in West Branch, about 140 miles northwest of Detroit, after finding out her classmates decided to nominate her as a prank.
“Every girl looks forward to being on that homecoming court and for her name to be called,” hairstylist Shannon Champagne, who did Kropp’s hair, commented  . “For her to be so excited about that and then just to find out that it was all just a joke, it just — it really touched me.”

Taxpayers Spent $1.4 Billion On Obama Family Last Year, Perks Questioned In New Book

Taxpayers spent $1.4 billion dollars on everything from staffing, housing, flying and entertaining President Obama and his family last year, according to the author of a new book on taxpayer-funded presidential perks.
In comparison, British taxpayers spent just $57.8 million on the royal family.
Author Robert Keith Gray writes in “Presidential Perks Gone Royal  ” that Obama isn’t the only president to have taken advantage of the expensive trappings of his office. But the amount of money spent on the first family, he argues, has risen tremendously under the Obama administration and needs to be reined in.
Gray told The Daily Caller that the $1.4 billion spent on the Obama family last year is the “total cost of the presidency,” factoring the cost of the “biggest staff in history at the highest wages ever,” a 50 percent increase in the numbers of appointed czars and an Air Force One “running with the frequency of a scheduled air line.”

‘STAND WITH US’: THOUSANDS GATHER IN PRAYER AT PHILADELPHIA ‘AMERICA FOR JESUS’ RALLY

Thousands of Christians gathered Saturday on Independence Mall in Philadelphia to pray for the future of the United States in the weeks before the upcoming presidential election.
Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson and Family Research Council president Tony Perkins topped a full day of speakers at “The America for Jesus 2012” prayer rally  .
Robertson, a former Republican candidate for president, called the election important, but didn’t mention either major political party or candidate by name.

Curt Quips, Gaffes And Stumbles: Debates Have History Of Memorable Moments

Here we go again.
Voters, pundits and political junkies will be glued to Wednesday night’s presidential debate to see more than just a back-and-forth on national defense, the economy and other issues.
Of equal interest will be the potential zingers, one-liners, jokes, gaffes and screw-ups that have made past debates timeless pieces of political pop culture.
Few remember who technically won the 1984 debate between incumbent Republican Ronald Reagan and Democrat Walter Mondale, but Reagan’s famous quip — “I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent’s youth and inexperience” — is viewed as arguably the single greatest line ever uttered during a presidential contest and is by far the most memorable moment of that year’s debate circuit.

The Next Big Financial Crisis That Could Cripple Cities

Cities are constantly righting the wrongs of decades past. The miscues of the urban renewal era – windswept plazas, hulking parking garages, and the elevated freeways blasted through downtowns across the country – have kept planners busy over the last 50 years. But there are other policies that have a lasting and devastating impact on the health of cities. That’s currently on sad display as municipalities try to deal with the ticking time bomb of public employee pensions. State government pensions have dominated the headlines, beginning, as ever, with California. Less well known is the plight of local governments, struggling with the very same problem. There are 220 state pension plans but nearly 3,200 locally administered across the nation, wreaking havoc on municipal budgets already in tatters. Like many urban renewal plans, generous pensions for a range of city employees were established with the best of intentions, in the context of another era. Awarding pensions – long since been phased out in the private sector and replaced with individual retirement accounts to which employers often contribute over the course of one’s career – was seen as a way of rewarding public service, particularly for salaries that were not competitive with the private sector. Mexican Cartels Are In Chicago

Mexican cartels are using Chicago gangs to traffic billions of dollars worth of drugs while concealing themselves in the city's Mexican population, Jason Howerton of The Blaze reports. Jack Riley, special agent in charge for the Chicago Field Division of the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), told The Blaze that drug cartels have designated the city as one of its main U.S. hubs of operations and their increasing presence in the city has contributed to the spiking murder rate, which is up 31 percent from 2011. Riley said the Mexican cartels are "the most organized, well-funded, vicious criminal organizations that we’ve ever seen," adding that traditional mobsters don't compare to the ruthless effectiveness of the Zeta and Sinaloa cartels. Why I Refuse To Vote For Barack Obama

Tell certain liberals and progressives that you can't bring yourself to vote for a candidate who opposes gay rights, or who doesn't believe in Darwinian evolution, and they'll nod along. Say that you'd never vote for a politician caught using the 'n'-word, even if you agreed with him on more policy issues than his opponent, and the vast majority of left-leaning Americans would understand. But these same people cannot conceive of how anyone can discern Mitt Romney's flaws, which I've chronicled in the course of the campaign, and still not vote for Obama.

Don't they see that Obama's transgressions are worse than any I've mentioned?

I don't see how anyone who confronts Obama's record with clear eyes can enthusiastically support him. I do understand how they might concluded that he is the lesser of two evils, and back him reluctantly, but I'd have thought more people on the left would regard a sustained assault on civil liberties and the ongoing, needless killing of innocent kids as deal-breakers.

Nope.

WHO CAN YOU BELIEVE?

Polling Bias UnskewedPolls.com has virtually called the Presidential race. They believe Mitt Romney will be the winner. According to them, the race is not close. Surprised? You should be if you don’t understand the corruption of the mainstream media and their pollsters. Almost every poll is terribly skewed in terms of over-weighting Democrats versus Republicans. Is it surprising that Obama polls better among Democrats than Romney? Polling is more art than science, even when it attempts to be fair. For example, how does one adjust for the results of 2008? Blacks represented 14% of the electorate although in prior elections they represented about 11%. Obama turned them on with his “hope and change.” That fervor is gone as blacks have suffered more under Obama than other constituency groups. Black pastors are urging parishioners to not vote, primarily due to Obama’s stance on gay marriage. Will blacks represent 14% of the electorate in 2012? No! But many pollsters weight them as such in their results. College kids turned out in record numbers for Obama in 2008. These young gullibles are not turned on this election. The future they were promised has turned into one of unemployment, moving back in with their parents and worrying about the burden of student loans. Both their proportion of the vote and the percentage that went for Obama will be down in 2012. More

QUOTES OF THE DAY 9-30-12

The beauty of it is that the people don’t have to invent a new system of government in order to get rid of this one. They only have to restore the one described in the Constitution, Joseph Sobran There are two sides to every issue: one side is right and the other is wrong, but the middle is always evil. Ayn Rand I am very fond of truth, but not at all of martyrdom. Voltaire Diplomacy is the art of saying “Nice doggie” until you can find a rock. Will Rogers Fear is the foundation of most government. John Adams The Constitution is a written instrument. As such, its meaning does not alter. That which it meant when it was adopted, it means now. South Carolina v. United States, 199 U.S. 437, 448 (1905)

Obama Cabinet Flunks Disclosure Test With 19 In 20 Ignoring Law

On his first full day in office, President Barack Obama ordered federal officials to “usher in a new era of open government” and “act promptly” to make information public. As Obama nears the end of his term, his administration hasn’t met those goals, failing to follow the requirements of the Freedom of Information Act, according to an analysis of open-government requests filed by Bloomberg News. Nineteen of 20 cabinet-level agencies disobeyed the law requiring the disclosure of public information: The cost of travel by top officials. In all, just eight of the 57 federal agencies met Bloomberg’s request for those documents within the 20-day window required by the Act. “When it comes to implementation of Obama’s wonderful transparency policy goals, especially FOIA policy in particular, there has been far more ‘talk the talk’ rather than ‘walk the walk,’” said Daniel Metcalfe, director of the Department of Justice’s office monitoring the government’s compliance with FOIA requests from 1981 to 2007. Obama's Libya Handling Panned In Poll

President Barack Obama is starting to see some backlash from friends and foes in Washington and from voters over his handling of the situation in Libya, where U.S. ambassador Chris Stevens was killed there on Sept. 11. Obama is now facing criticism from fellow Democratic lawmakers questioning why the administration refused to originally characterize the attacks as an act of terror. The Washington Examiner reported that Democratic Sen. John Kerry wrote a bipartisan letter to Deputy Secretary of State Thomas Nides, which called for an "accounting of the attacks against U.S. missions in Egypt, Libya and Yemen." More

How Crony Capitalism (Or The 'Undiluted Lunacy' Of The Fed) Corrupts The Free Markets

"This is the final abomination" is how David Stockman begins his epic rant on the Federal Reserve and crony capitalism in this clip. The "undiluted lunacy" of their actions prompted him to address the Fed's decision to "print ourselves to death" by saying "this has gone too far, it's street-fighting time" as he decides, instead of the erudite philosophical view of how capitalism is being destroyed by statist philosophies of one type or another, to launch into a full-strength tirade about The Fed. For starters, "The Fed is being run by the single most-dangerous man ever to hold high office in the history of the United States, "as he opines that Bernanke is more dangerous than Geithner, Greenspan, Summers, Hank Paulson all put together. Real Disposable Income Has First Drop Since November 2011, Savings Rate Tumbles

There were no surprises in the August Personal Income and Spending numbers, which came at 0.1% and 0.5%, respectively, on expectations of a 0.2% and 0.5% rise. Summarized: less income, more spending. This however, did not make the consumer income statement data any better: the bottom line is that adjusted for inflation, Real Disposable Income slid 0.3% in August, after a tiny 0.1% increase in July, the first such decline since November 2011, and as Bloomberg's Joseph Brusuelas says this is "another rough report for the consumer which doesn’t bode well for household spending going forward." Which means Bernanke knew precisely what he was doing when he launched QE3, which all advocated of QE3 will now say was fully justified. There is one problem with that logic however: for QE3 to be justified, it would mean QE1 and 2 were. Well, last we checked the US is still in a major depression, and neither QE1, 2, nor Twist 1 or 2 have done anything to prevent today's ugly data. Surely, this time it will be different. Finally, and as a result of the ongoing contraction in income, as expected the savings rate dropped from 4.1% to 3.7%: the lowest since May. More
