Ehrlich Mourns Passing Of Page Elmore
Eastern Shore Delegate Succumbs to Cancer at 71
Bob Ehrlich today noted with sadness and respect the passing of Delegate Page Elmore, a Republican from Maryland’s Eastern Shore who served his constituents with distinction for eight years in Annapolis.
“Page was a man of great honor and intelligence,” Ehrlich said. “He dedicated himself to serving the watermen, farmers, teachers and all citizens in his district with energy and compassion.”
Delegate Elmore was devoted to his family and his constituents, Ehrlich noted, adding that “his warmth and dignity will be missed; his honesty and intellect will be long remembered.”
Ehrlich noted further that Delegate Elmore had the ability to work with legislators from both parties and maintain their trust and confidence. “Page was modest but strong, and provided a voice for the people of the Eastern Shore; he’ll be missed.”

Netanyahu Seeks US Bombs For Iran Attack
Netanyahu will ask Israel's closest ally to supply sophisticated 'bunker-buster' bombs needed to break through to Iran's nuclear enrichment sites, the Sunday Times reported.
The Israeli premier is expected to attend a three-day meeting of the top pro-Israeli lobby in the US, the American Israel Public Affairs Committee, commonly known as AIPAC and to meet with senior administration officials.
Plans for a military attack against Iran have gained momentum in Tel Aviv over the past few months.
On November 7, Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon warned Iran that Tel Aviv's persistent threats of military action were not just a bluff.
Meanwhile, the Sunday Herald has reported that hundreds of powerful US "bunker-buster" bombs are being shipped from California to the British island of Diego Garcia located in the Indian Ocean.
Experts believe that the cargo manifest from the US navy is being put in place for an assault on Iran's nuclear facilities, said the newspaper.
The US military used Diego Garcia as a base to attack Iraq in 1991 and 2003.
The developments come as US president Barack Obama on Saturday once again repeated his offer of "dialogue" with Tehran.

Report: US Warships Stationed Off Iranian Coast
The chart, published by Stratfor and obtained by the Zero Hedge financial blog, shows that over the last few weeks a naval carrier -- the USS Harry S Truman -- has been positioned in the north Indian Ocean, not far from the Strait of Hormuz, which leads into the Persian Gulf. The carrier joins the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower, which was already located in the area. The chart is dated June 23, 2010.
Reports of mass movements of Israeli and US naval warships have been circulating through the media for weeks. On June 19, the Israeli newspaper Ha'aretz reported that 12 US and Israeli warships were seen moving through the Suez Canal from the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea.
And a report from the Associated Press published Saturday evening cited "unconfirmed" reports from Israeli and Iranian media that Saudi Arabia has allowed Israel to use its territory in preparation for an attack on Iranian nuclear facilities.
"The allegation could not be independently confirmed, and the Saudis deny cooperating with the Israeli military," AP reported.
The claims that Israel may be preparing for an assault on Iranian nuclear facilities were strengthened this weekend by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who told reporters at the G8 summit in Canada that G8 leaders "believe absolutely" that Israel will "probably" strike Iran.

Door To Door Alarm Sales
Narrative: It has been brought to the attention of the Wicomico County Sheriff’s that there are door-to-door solicitors which may be misrepresenting themselves as employees of a local alarm company. Information received by the WCSO confirms these solicitors as residents of another state.
Here are a few issues that the Sheriff’s Office would like to make our citizens aware of:
Some may falsely claim to represent different alarm companies.
Others claim to represent the customer’s existing alarm company, and falsely tell the customer that they need an upgrade. The sales person may attempt to tell you that your current company has gone out of business or that the company the salesperson represents has bought your company. After the customer signs, they become obligated to two companies for the same services.
May claim that your service is out of date or obsolete and buy signing with their company you may obtain all the benefits of their modern technology.
Still others claim to offer a “free” system when in reality customers are committing to an extended contract that has a built in fee for the equipment. Always be leery of anything that is offered for “free”
While the Sheriff’s Office does not make any endorsements or recommendations on any particular company or equipment, we ask that you use caution when entering into a contract with any door to door salesperson.

The Truth About Tokyo Steak House Dispute Yesterday
Was looking for a little help.
Sunday night I went to Tokyo Steak House with about 15 members of my family to celebrate my husband's 30th birthday. After dinner, some of us were conversing in the parking lot. My husband unlocked our car to get a bag out for his mother and did not lock the car back since we walked just a couple parking spaces over. Moments later I realized someone was bend over the driver's seat of my car, so I confronted this person. She then threw my belongings she was attempting to steal back into my car seat and tried to say she was in the wrong car. When I called her out on trying to steal, she became hostile, so I had to do my best to restrain her while screaming for help. This girl then bit me on my chest. At that time my husband came over and broke us up. The girl ended up back in the passenger seat of her vehicle, my husband jumped in the seat with her trying to keep them from leaving. The driver began to back out, and my father in law attempted to stop them as well. My father in law was thrown from the vehicle into the parking lot. He now has a broken wrist and is in surgery to have screws and plates put in his wrist. The driver drove a lap around Tokyo Steak House with my husband hanging half way out of her car, then went behind Tokyo and drove a couple laps around the Outback area trying to throw my husband from the vehicle. After a couple minutes, the driver did stop so my husband was able to get out of the vehicle, but the two girls were able to get away. SPD came and we filed a complaint. The owner of Tokyo told the officer at first that they have surveillance but was unable to get to it until Monday. Later, she told the officer she does not have surveillance, but only said she did so her employees would think there was surveillance cameras.
I was wondering if I gave some information on these two girls and their vehicle, if you could post this for me and hopefully one of your many readers would possibly know one or both of these girls.
It was a champagne color, mid size SUV with DE tags. The partial I remember from the plate is 11686 or very close to that. If I were to guess the year of the SUV, I would say possibly 2006-2008. The passenger was about 5'5" or 5'6", thin build, with really dark hair (almost, if not black) and red highlights. She had it pulled back in a tight ponytail, so the length is hard to guess, but I would say probably shoulder length and her ponytail appeared to be wavy.
I didn't get a good look at the driver since she never exited the vehicle, but my husband says she was "husky" but not "fat" and her hair was lighter than the passenger's but not blonde. The driver has tattoos of paw prints (possibly like raccoon prints or something other than cat or dog) with sharp claws on her right leg above her knee as if they were crawling up her leg.
One of the girls also had a tattoo of a bird on her shoulder. As contradicting as this sounds, it could have been a hummingbird or it could have been an eagle. I am thinking these girls could have possibly been sisters, as they seem to favor each other in looks. Also, the name they gave to the receptionist at the restaurant was "Joy".
If anyone could please help us out. What these girls did was not right, not one bit.
Thank you so much for your help Joe!
Hamas Asked By US To Keep Silent On Talks
The Hamas figure told the London-based Al-Quds Al-Arabi newspaper that the Americans fear discussing the talks publicly would "rouse the Jewish lobby and other pressure groups in the US and cause them to pressure the administration to suspend all talks with Hamas."
The Hamas figure, who is close to Ismail Haniyeh, the prime minister of the government in Gaza, added, "This is a sensitive subject. The Americans don't want anyone to comment on it because this would catch the attention of pressure groups (in the US) and cause problems."
He said Hamas' exiled leadership in Damascus is overseeing the contacts behind closed doors.
On Wednesday a Washington-based Arabic newspaper quoted a senior official as saying that an American envoy is scheduled to meet with Hamas representatives in an Arab country and hand them a letter from the Obama Administration.

Governor O’Malley Doesn’t Know A Public School When He Sees One
Charter schools are publicly-funded schools that operate with greater autonomy and increased accountability in order to help students for whom their current education system is not working. But a recent article in The Washington Post shows Governor O'Malley is clearly confused over the role of these innovative schools and even has to be corrected by a reporter. Below is a transcription.
"'However well our charters school act is, it's not an excuse to fix our public schools. I believe in fixing public schools,' O'Malley said."
"An editorial writer interrupted, challenging O'Malley, 'but charters are public schools.'"
"'Yes, and no,' O'Malley said, pausing, 'yes, and no, because they are, I mean, they are publics schools in a sense. But if they were public schools in the sense, um, uh, .. they're independently operated. And well, you know how they are different from' public schools.'
"'I really don't,' the writer shot back. 'They're operated with public funds, on a lottery system and can't exclude students.'"
"'Yes, and they operate under separate management systems and they are a little bit different,' O'Malley said. "But they provide a good sort of catalyst and a way to infuse the larger system with good ideas.'"
"Marylanders have a right to be troubled by Governor O'Malley's obvious lack of curiosity with innovative ideas that can better the lives of tens of thousands of students," Bob Ehrlich said in response. "We can do better than a governor who dismisses the heroic efforts of parents, teachers, and citizens who strive to build better, more accountable schools for their children. That begins with having a real conversation with Maryland families, students, and teachers about what matters most in our education system. There are many ways to improve our public schools - including sound investments, rewarding successful teachers, and high academic standards - and public charters must be one of those solutions in Maryland."
Bob Ehrlich is the product of an education secured by scholarships; were it not for the kindness of others and the benefits of rigorous academic studies imposed by excellent schools, his life might have turned out very differently. It’s because Bob Ehrlich appreciates what a chance at a better education can mean, and what high standards can do, that he wants to make it easier and more efficient for parents to create their own charter schools.

I Just Couldn't Resist!
Dear Friend,
I met Barbara Mikulski in 1986 when I proudly became the Field Director for her very first Senate campaign. Now, as Maryland's Governor, I couldn't be more proud to stand with Barbara once again.
As my Senator, she's been at the forefront of issues most important to our state. She fought for women's rights in health care, to protect the Chesapeake Bay, to bring jobs back to Maryland, and to stop offshore drilling. Barbara has never lost focus on what matters most. Now, she's counting on people like you and me to help her prepare for a big fight in November.
Maryland needs a progressive partner in Washington, and we need Barbara. This is a competitive race, and we cannot take anything for granted, She needs our help to raise $20,000 before her critical end-of-quarter filing deadline.
Click here to help Barbara reach her crucial fundraising goal. Even as little as $5 will help her raise $20,000 by June 30 and show her opponents that Maryland's with Senator Barb!
It might have been over a quarter-of-a-century ago, but I learned pretty quickly on that first campaign just how important the Maryland grassroots are to Senator Barb. Well, we've come through for her before, and now is the time to do it again.Senator Barb is counting on all of us to help her reach this critical goal. She never stops fighting for us Marylanders, and we can't stop fighting for her. This is an all-hands-on-deck moment and I need your help.
Click here to make an immediate donation to Barbara's campaign. Even as little as $5 will help her raise $20,000 by June 30 and show her opponents that Maryland's with Senator Barb!
Sincerely,
Governor Martin O'Malley
Many Americans Overtreated To Death
The doctors finally let Rosaria Vandenberg go home.
For the first time in months, she was able to touch her 2-year-old daughter who had been afraid of the tubes and machines in the hospital. The little girl climbed up onto her mother's bed, surrounded by family photos, toys and the comfort of home. They shared one last tender moment together before Vandenberg slipped back into unconsciousness.
Vandenberg, 32, died the next day.
That precious time at home could have come sooner if the family had known how to talk about alternatives to aggressive treatment, said Vandenberg's sister-in-law, Alexandra Drane.
Instead, Vandenberg, a pharmacist in Franklin, Mass., had endured two surgeries, chemotherapy and radiation for an incurable brain tumor before she died in July 2004.
"We would have had a very different discussion about that second surgery and chemotherapy. We might have just taken her home and stuck her in a beautiful chair outside under the sun and let her gorgeous little daughter play around her — not just torture her" in the hospital, Drane said.
Americans increasingly are treated to death, spending more time in hospitals in their final days, trying last-ditch treatments that often buy only weeks of time, and racking up bills that have made medical care a leading cause of bankruptcies.

BREAKING NEWS: Supreme Court Extends Gun Rights
The justices cast doubt on a Chicago-area handgun ban that has been in place since 1982, but also signaled in their 5-4 decision that less severe restrictions could survive legal challenges.
The ruling on gun rights and three other remaining cases came in its last meeting until the fall and the final day of Justice John Paul Stevens' long service.

SALISBURY COUNCIL “MAJORITY OF TWO” NIXES IRETON’S APPOINTEE TO HOUSING BOARD TO REPLACE RICHARD INSLEY
The discussion lasted nearly an hour, during which there were several pointed exchanges, especially between Ms. Smith and the Mayor – Smith admonished him that it was a Council meeting – and between Ms. Cohen and Ms. Shields. When it became clear that the situation was not going to change, Ireton left the meeting obviously disappointed and disgusted by the majority of two.
Smith based her objection upon remarks that Ms. Lloyd made at a City Council meeting in 2008 in which she suggested possible corruption by certain members of the Council; Smith believes that the suggestion was directed at her among others. In her remarks, Ms. Lloyd was addressing the routine 3-2 voting by the Council and said that it appeared to her that the majority decided in advance of the meetings to vote together, which suggested possible corruption (words to that effect).
Shields feels that Ms. Lloyd would not be impartial because she is a realtor, even though the code calls for a realtor to be a member of the housing board. Shields has previously supported Mr. Insley’s appointment to the Housing Board despite the fact that he is a landlord and former officer of SAPOA.
Ireton has apparently decided to withdraw the appointment and submit another appointee to fill the seat currently held by Richard Insley, whose term has expired. The City’s attorney, Paul Wilber, has advised that Insley will remain a member of the Board until his successor has been appointed by Ireton and confirmed by the Council.
Earlier, Ireton had informed Insley, who has served more than 12 years on the Housing Board, that he would not be reappointed. In recent months the mayor has made remarks that disparage Insley’s actions as a member (and chair) of the Board.
This is a real opportunity for Gary Comegys to effect serious collaboration between Mayor Ireton and a new majority on the Council. We have no idea why Mr. Comegys was not present, other than his health issues, unless he is devoting his time to campaigning to be elected next week as the next president of the Maryland Municipal League. In any event it may be a missed opportunity.
MAYOR IRETON: CLEAN UP THE OLD “SALISBURY MALL” NOW!
Well, that date has long passed and even now the site has not been mowed or cleaned up.
This is the City that comes down on residential property owners for a few blades of grass in the sidewalk, but nothing has been done about acres covered with tall weeds and grass, now going to seed, and trash at the site of that old mall. Once again, it’s Salisbury’s biggest “Slum Property of the Week.”
And it’s time for action, Mr. Ireton!

On Final Day, Top Court To Rule On Gun Rights
The court is meeting Monday morning just a couple of hours before high court nominee Elena Kagan goes before the Senate Judiciary Committee for her confirmation hearing.
The justices could decide that the Second Amendment's right to "keep and bear arms" serves as a check on local and state gun control laws, as well as federal restrictions.
The court also could strike down part of a 2002 corporate reform law that was enacted in response to scandals at Enron Corp. and other companies. The other remaining cases involve patents and a Christian group that bars gay students and wants official recognition from a state university.

How Will Wicomico County Handle The Unfortunate Death Of Sam Vincent
Currently there's a Life Insurance Policy in place up to $50,000.00 and the County/State will pick up the balance of Sam's 1 year salary through the Sinking Fund.
After this Wednesday, Wicomico County will pick up the full tab on such unfortunate deaths. Mind you, this department is somewhat of a grey area in the sense that the States Attorney's Office is a State job.
There was talk earlier last week where some were questioning if they work for the County or the State. The States Attorney's Office works for the State but Wicomico County pays their salary. Nevertheless, the Vincent Family will receive a full year salary.
This topic is brought up for a couple of reasons. One is to make it clear the States Attorneys Office works for the State of Maryland. The other is, the reality of this tragic event should open the eyes of each and every one of you. A Life Insurance Policy today is very inexpensive. God Forbid your loved one were to pass away, are you truly covered? Will one year's salary cover your spouses overhead.
Contact your local Insurance Agent and check into the cost of additional Life Insurance. You'll be amazed at how much the rates have dropped recently.
How Hot? We're Talking Spontaneous Combustion
Don't believe it? Just ask Frederick County Fire Marshal Marc McNeal, who told the Frederick News-Post that excessive heat caused a dead plant to catch fire Sunday afternoon in a hanging planter on the rear deck of a townhouse.
The hanging basket fell to the deck and burned some vinyl siding, causing about $3,000 in damages.
It has definitely been hot in the Washington region. Monday will be the 10th day in a row that we've reached 90 degrees or higher, and this will be the 17th day of the month that the thermometer has reached 90.
NBC4 meteorologist Tom Kierein said that when it's all said and done, June 2010 likely will be the hottest June on record in the District.
Well, there is good news for all of those concerned about spontaneously combusting as soon as they step outside Monday. Relief is on the way.
A welcome break will come Monday night as a cool front brings cooler temperatures and lower humidity. But it will come at the expense of possible thunderstorms ahead of the cool front.
There will be a small chance of isolated storms with damaging winds between 4-8 p.m.
However, the low humidity and cooler temperatures are expected to stay with us all the way through the Fourth of July weekend.
So try not to catch fire just yet. If you can hang on for one more day, you will be rewarded with a break from the heat.

Obama Can Shut Down Internet For 4 Months Under New Emergency Powers
President Obama will be handed the power to shut down the Internet for at least four months without Congressional oversight if the Senate votes for the infamous Internet ‘kill switch’ bill, which was approved by a key Senate committee yesterday and now moves to the floor.
The Protecting Cyberspace as a National Asset Act, which is being pushed hard by Senator Joe Lieberman, would hand absolute power to the federal government to close down networks, and block incoming Internet traffic from certain countries under a declared national emergency.
Despite the Center for Democracy and Technology and 23 other privacy and technology organizations sending letters to Lieberman and other backers of the bill expressing concerns that the legislation could be used to stifle free speech, the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee passed in the bill in advance of a vote on the Senate floor.
In response to widespread criticism of the bill, language was added that would force the government to seek congressional approval to extend emergency measures beyond 120 days.
Still, this would hand Obama the authority to shut down the Internet on a whim without Congressional oversight or approval for a period of no less than four months.
Fears that the legislation is aimed at bringing the Internet under the regulatory power of the U.S. government in an offensive against free speech were heightened further on Sunday, when Lieberman revealed that the plan was to mimic China’s policies of policing the web with censorship and coercion.
“Right now China, the government, can disconnect parts of its Internet in case of war and we need to have that here too,” Lieberman said.
While media and public attention is overwhelmingly focused on the BP oil spill, the establishment is quietly preparing the framework that will allow Obama, or indeed any President who follows him, to bring down a technological iron curtain that will give the government a foot in the door on seizing complete control over the Internet.
Scott Brown Could Scuttle Financial Reform Bill
"I was surprised and extremely disappointed to hear that $18 billion in new assessments and fees were added in the wee hours of the morning by the conference committee," Massachusetts Senator Scott Brown said.
He issued the statement after negotiators from the Senate and House of Representatives emerged from a marathon session early Friday morning with a final compromise on a bill that would bring about the most sweeping financial rules revamp since the 1930s.
The legislation would set up a new financial consumer watchdog, create a protocol for dismantling troubled financial firms and mandate higher bank capital standards -- all in an effort to avoid a repeat of the 2007-2009 credit crisis that hammered the economy and triggered taxpayer bailouts of floundering firms.
"While I'm still reviewing the bill's details, these provisions were not in the Senate version of the bill which I previously supported ... I've said repeatedly that I cannot support any bill that raises tax," Brown said.
Iran Is Surrounded By US Troops In 10 Countries
Iran is bordered on the east by Pakistan and Afghanistan, where U.S. troops have been waging a costly war, in terms of money and lives, against Taliban, Al-Qaeda and other terrorists.
The Persian Gulf is on Iran’s southern border, and last week’s report, confirmed by the Pentagon, that 11 warships had sailed through the Suez Canal, raised alarm bells that the U.S. is ready to fight to keep the Persian Gulf open.
Iran has threatened it could close the waterway, where 40 percent of the world’s oil flows in tankers, if the United Nations or the United States by itself carry out harsh energy sanctions against the Islamic Republic. An Israeli ship has also reportedly joined the U.S. armada.
Kuwait, which is heavily armed by the U.S. and is home to American bases, is located on the southwestern border of Iran. The country’s western neighbors are Turkey and Iraq, also home to American bases, and Turkmenistan, the Caspian Sea and Azerbaijan are the Islamic Republic’s northern neighbors.
The U.S.army last year advanced military cooperation with Turkmenistan. An independent Caspian news agency has confirmed unusually heavy activity of American troops along the border with Iran. The Iranian Revolutionary Guards' Brigadier General Mehdi Moini said last week that his forces increased patrols, including tanks and anti-aircraft units, along the border with Azerbaijan because they noticed increased American activity. Iran charged that Israeli forces were also present, sparking a virtual war alert among the Iranian Guards.
In addition, the Times of London reported earlier this month that Saudi Arabia has agreed to open its air space for Israel Air Force jets, a claim that the Saudi monarchy denied. It similar denied Iranian news agency claims that Israeli helicopters unloaded military equipment at a northwestern Saudi Arabian air base, from where Israeli planes theoretically could reach Iran in the shortest possible time.

Conflicting Reports On Iran Flotilla Ship
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Arab Affairs Reza Shibani said Sunday that Iran will send a ship with humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, denying reports that the Iranian flotilla had been canceled, Israel Radio reported.
Shibani said that the timing of the flotilla leaving from his country will depend on when various other flotillas are planning to set sail for Gaza.
He added that Teheran asked Egypt if they would allow Iran to send humanitarian aid to Gaza through the air and is awaiting a reply.
The Iranian Red Crescent announced earlier on Sunday that the aid ship it intended to send to Gaza will be postponed after Egypt refused to allow any vessels belonging to the Iranian organization from entering the Suez Canal.
"The ship's departure has been postponed because of more restrictions imposed by the Zionist occupying regime on the movement of aid to Gaza and prevention of the ship from using the Suez Canal," the Iranian Red Crescent said in a statement sent to AFP.
On Saturday another Iranian lawmaker said that the Islamic Republic would not be sending a blockade-busting ship to Gaza , citing Israeli "restrictions."
Mahmoud Ahmadi Bighash told the semiofficial ISNA news agency that instead of sending a ship, an Iranian delegation of lawmakers would travel to Lebanon and sail on one of the aid ships expected to head to Gaza from there.

V-J Day: 1945
Edith Shain, who claimed to be the nurse kissed by a sailor in Life magazine’s memorable photograph of V-J Day in Times Square on Aug. 14, 1945, died last week at age 91.
“The happiness was indescribable,” Mrs. Shain later recalled, and the joy over Japan’s surrender, captured in that one image by the renowned photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt, swept across the city. “Restraint was thrown to the four winds,” The New York Times reported the next day. New Year's Eve celebrations paled into insignificance. ... In the Times Square area particularly, crowds in bars were four and five deep with servicemen — principally sailors — predominating.” At one dinner club, the Zanzibar, “patrons climbed on tables and shouted and screamed. ...Pandemonium took over.”
Next President Elected By Just 15% Of Voters
The total might be even higher already.
But that has a number of analysts alarmed, including author Tara Ross, who has written in opposition to the concept of a direct national vote for president at the Save Our States.com website.
"Eliminating the Electoral College would probably mean at least two things: Elections will become easier to steal and the two-party system will be undermined. So it follows that two types of political parties would benefit the most: Those that don't mind stealing elections and third parties," she wrote.
The California-based National Popular Vote has been working since about 2006 on its plan that would assign Electoral College votes to the presidential candidate who has captured the most individual votes in a presidential election nationwide – no matter who has won in an individual state.
The Electoral College system now assigns votes by the state – or in a couple of cases by the congressional district – based on the popular vote in that state or district. This is the circumstance that gave George W. Bush the presidency in 2000 even though Al Gore collected more popular votes.
It is being promoted in state legislatures – it has been introduced in all 50 – as a compact among the states in which legislators commit their state's votes to the popular vote winner as soon as there are enough states to guarantee a victor with 270 ElectoralCollege votes.
So far, Hawaii, with 4 votes; New Jersey, 15; Illinois, 20; Maryland, 10; and Washington, 11; have made commitments. As of now, there are active bills that could put another three states in that camp: New York, 31; Massachusetts, 12; and Delaware, 3.
That would total 106 of the needed 270 Electoral College votes.
Spokesman Barry Fadem told WND the move would help small states and other "flyover" regions where political candidates don't usually campaign because a vote is a vote wherever, and advertising and such would be less expensive in rural areas.
He said the compact among the states is perfectly legitimate because the Founding Fathers gave to the state legislatures the responsibility to determine the allocation of Electoral College votes.
"Why would a presidential candidate campaign in Hawaii or Alaska? The reason is because every vote would count," he said.
However, Ross, who has written, "Enlightened Democracy: The Case for the Electoral College," said in a National Review analysis that the campaign is coming "startlingly close to success even as most Americans remain completely unaware that the presidential-election process is so close to being turned on its head."
Dem Lawmakers Feel The Heat On Border Security
Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano this week laid out several new initiatives aimed at strengthening the federal government’s partnership with local law enforcement, and President Barack Obama requested $600 million in emergency border funds from Congress.
The money will go toward supporting an additional 1,200 Border Patrol agents as well as launching two aerial surveillance drones.
But Arizona Rep. Ann Kirkpatrick (D) pointed to recent drug cartel threats against local law enforcement officials in her home state as evidence that the ongoing drug cartels are escalating the levels of violence along the border. If the U.S. fails to tighten border security, it could pay the price, said Kirkpatrick -- one of roughly a dozen lawmakers who, over the July Fourth recess, will likely face voters who are not satisfied with the status quo.
“With the drug war in Mexico burning hotter than ever and our citizens being targeted more and more, the risks to law enforcement and to our communities are unmistakably growing,” said Kirkpatrick.
“The cartels have shown an increasing level of violence and brutality. We should act now, before that violence crosses our borders, instead of waiting for it to come to us.”
Several other Democratic lawmakers representing districts along the U.S.-Mexico border have told The Hill that more violent episodes, such as the recent killing of a Mexican teenager by a U.S. Border Patrol officer, can be expected as the region’s law enforcement is heightened.
Meanwhile, Rep. Sue Myrick (R-N.C.) wrote a letter to Napolitano last week asking her to look into possible ties between Central and South American drug cartels – especially those along the U.S.-Mexico border – with the Iranian-backed Hezbollah, which is designated a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S.
Myrick said there is an increasing amount of evidence that supports the theory that Hezbollah may have a significant amount of influence along the border, which could result in Middle-East style car bombings.

Border Patrol Boycotting Arizona?
The U.S. Border Patrol and the Department of Education cancelled conferences in the state of Arizona over the controversy surrounding the state’s immigration law. The federal agencies seem to be joining a growing list of entities, from cities to gay rights organizations, that are boycotting the state of Arizona for passing its controversial immigration enforcement bill.
President Obama has expressed a desire to strengthen border security along the nation’s southern border, and earlier this week acted on the desire by throwing money at the Border Patrol.
Arizona passed the immigration reform to make up for the federal government’s incompetence to secure the border and protect American citizens. So now federal agencies are boycotting the state because they passed legislation that actually took steps towards solving a national security issue the federal government itself is incapable of solving.
Even U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, an Arizona Democrat opposed to the immigration law, finds the recent actions taken by the U.S. Border Patrol and the Department of Education appalling:
“It is very troubling when the federal government becomes involved in a boycott against our state,” said Giffords in a statement. “Although I personally disagree with the immigration law, it came about because of growing frustration over the federal government’s unwillingness to secure the border. The federal government’s participation in this boycott only adds to that frustration.”
The Border Patrol has almost a one quarter of its agents in Arizona, or a little over 4,000 agents.Read more at the Washington Examiner:

Russian Navy Commandos Capture Somali Pirates
This is part of the videotape showing Russian Navy commandos on a Somalia pirate ship. You may remember that the pirates captured a Russian oil tanker. The EuroUnion navy that patrols these waters could not interfere because there could be casualties.
All explanations are in Russian and, with a single exception when a wounded pirate tells something in English, all conversations are between the commandos, in Russian. If you don't understand Russian, the pictures speak for themselves.
http://true- turtle.livejourn al.com/85315. html
The soldiers freed their compatriots, moved all the pirates to their own (pirate) ship, searched the pirate ship for weapons and explosives, and took seven Somalia pirates. Then they left the ship and exploded it with all remaining pirates on it.
The commandos sank the majority of the pirates without any court proceedings, lawyers, etc. That is, they used the anti-piracy laws of the 18th and the 19th centuries.
The captain of the rescuing ship has the right to decide what to do with the pirates. Usually, they were hanged.
I would think from now on the Russian ships will not be targets...

Drinking In 1968
Today in 1968 Tavern patrons were permitted to stand up to a bar and drink due to legislation signed by Governor Terry.
This Day in Delaware History facts were compiled by historian Roger Martin and brought to you by the Delaware Public Archives
For those of us old enough to remember in the 1960's Delaware had a number of odd laws concerning drinking in taverns, compared to Maryland. I can remember the bar stools had to be screwed to the floor and if you decided to move from the bar to a table you couldn't pick up your drink and just go, the waitress had to carry the drink over to the table for you.
