“This is a difficult day in the history of our City. All of us need to support Council President Rawlings-Blake as she takes on the critically important work of leading Baltimore’s progress as our new Mayor.”

STATEMENT FROM A READER OF SALISBURY NEWS: My Girl Shelia Dixon resigned as Mayor after a plea agreement and will NOT have to go to Jail and still receive a pension of $80.000 + a year. Not bad for a couple of gift cards huh.

State Department Using 'Diversity Visas' To Encourage Immigration To U.S. From Terror-Ridden Yemen

(CNSNews.com) - The State Department has awarded 1,011 special “diversity visas” allowing Yemeni nationals to immigrate to the United States since 2000, the year 17 U.S. sailors were killed when the USS Cole was attacked by terrorists in the Yemeni port of Aden.

The "diversity visas" are designed to encourage immigration from countries that do not otherwise send significant numbers of immigrants to the United States.

The State Department roster of all countries whose nationals have received "diversity visas" to immigrate to the United States in 2010, for example, shows that 2 of these immigrants will be from Luxembourg, 3 from the Solomon Islands, 4 from French Guiana, 5 from Reunion, 6 from Cape Verde, 7 from Malta, 8 from Guinea-Bissau, 9 from Comoros, 10 from Suriname--and 72 from Yemen. Nationals of the four states listed by the State Department as state sponsors of terrorism--Cuba, Iran, Sudan, and Syria--also received "diversity visas" from the State Department to immigrate to the United States in 2010. These include 98 from Syria, 298 from Cuba, 1,084 from Sudan, and 2,773 from Iran.

That the U.S. would encourage immigration from Yemen during the past decade is of interest because of the terrorist problem in that country.

We Need Your Help

I know I am not supposed to send out emails to everyone like this but due to the circumstances I hope you understand.

Last night my aunt and uncle and cousins lost their house (the video is on Delmarvanow.com) it is totally gone and they have lost everything. My aunt came home and saw flames and not knowing she opened the door which the fire department has told her that just added fuel to the fire and made it worse. She panicked also when she saw the flames at the front door and dropped her purse to get her cell phone so has also lost everything in her purse as well. I know the items in your house are materialistic but they have lost their birth certificates, savings bonds, money from Christmas, the list goes on and on.

Luckily the principle where my aunt teaches has offered them a place to stay but that is all they have. I know at Christmas everyone was there to help others and hopefully there are still people out there that can help this family. Please forward this on to anyone you know that may be wanting to help.

We will provide contact information tomorrow.

The sizes of clothes that they desperately need are:

Alex, 19 years - 32-34 pants, XL shirt and 13 shoe

Alan – 38-34 pants, 2XL shirt and 11-11 ½ shoes

Judy – 14-16 pants, L or XL shirts

(My other two cousins are currently not living there so they have clothes with them)

Thanks for whatever you can do, it will be greatly appreciated.

GOVERNOR MARTIN O’MALLEY ANNOUNCES MARYLAND SAFE STREETS IN SALISBURY

SALISBURY, MD (January 6, 2010) – Governor Martin O’Malley announced today that Salisbury is a recipient of $156,261 in grant funds through the Maryland Safe Streets Program, making it the second site in the public safety program. Citing 25 year lows in the state homicide levels, the Governor highlighted the Safe Streets program as part of a comprehensive crime strategy aimed at reducing violent crime in Maryland.

“Salisbury demonstrates a measurable need to reduce crime as well as strong interagency commitment, collaboration, and focus,” said Governor O’Malley. “Our most solemn obligation as public servants is to preserve and protect the public’s safety. These funds go a long way in these tough economic times to provide the resources local law enforcement need, and they will help facilitate the local, state, and federal partnerships that are vital to driving down crime.”

The City of Salisbury's Safe Streets program addresses high incidences of crime in the city and surrounding areas. Utilizing a security integration model of multi-agency collaboration with federal, state, local law enforcement, public safety agencies, and community partners, the program aggressively tracks offenders to reduce drug, gun, and other major crimes. Grant funds provide salary, fringe, and overtime support for law enforcement, a Safe Streets Program Coordinator, a Community Prosecutor, and both a Project Hope Coordinator and Facilitator. Grant funds also provide computer software and equipment.

“Governor Martin O'Malley has picked the right place, at the right time, for funding the Maryland Safe Streets Grant. I am pleased to engage the City of Salisbury in the use of Governor O'Malley's Security Integration Model of multi-agency collaboration,” said Mayor James Ireton of Salisbury. “This strategy will be used to meet the goal of reducing Part 1 crimes in Salisbury by 25 percent. I am grateful to all the partnering agencies that collaborated with Salisbury, including: Salisbury Police Department, Maryland State Police, Wicomico County States Attorney Davis Ruark, the U.S. Department of Justice, the Wicomico County Board of Education, and the 10 neighborhood associations that pledged support.”

Through its Safe Streets Program, Salisbury will:

1. Develop a strategy which deploys Local, State, and Federal resources to identify repeat offenders who are engaged in gun and drug crime. This includes a commitment to sharing information in accordance with Federal and State law and pooling of resources to prioritize workloads.

2. Coordinate Local and Federal prosecution strategies so that they are focused on the most violent and repeat offenders, with an emphasis on reducing gun and drug-related violence.

3. Enhance information sharing, data analysis, and use of technology in accordance with Federal and State law to identify crime trends and to proactively address community conditions leading to crime.

4. Identify laws and regulations – such as code enforcement – that can be utilized to support public safety efforts.

5. Ensure that social services and drug treatment programs are a part of the coalition to reduce recidivism, support victims, and improve offenders' chances of successful re-entry to the community.

6. Include the community in the work of the Coalition by seeking to implement alternative dispute resolution, community-based crime prevention programs, diversion initiatives, and other appropriate community-based crime prevention initiatives.

7. Commit to share data at regular meetings, in accordance with Federal and State law, and to evaluate progress among the State and Local public safety agencies working within the coalition.

Annapolis City’s Capital City Safe Streets program has put innovative policy into action. Through a combination of improved police tactics and practices, modern and enhanced technology, and the integration of expanded community partnerships, Annapolis has benefited from a remarkable reduction in serious crime since the program’s inception in April 2008. In 2009 the City of Annapolis with assistance from the Capital City Safe Streets Coalition achieved a 35% reduction in total crime compared to 2008.

The City Of Salisbury Gets Safe Streets Grant

I'm popping into the Downtown Office for a brief period to share the news that Salisbury did receive the Safe Streets Grant in the amount of $156,000.00.

Mayor Ireton made the announcement in this mornings Press Conference, filled with dignitaries ranging from citizens who helped work on this grant all the way up to Congressman Frank Kratovil at the Federal level.

Mayor Ireton pledges part 1 crime will be reduced by 25%. There is a multi-agency collaboration between the SPD, MSP, WCSO, the States Attorneys Office and the 10 neighboring associations that have also pledged their support.

The funding will be used to hire a Coordinator to implement the strategies set forth under this grant. All parties working together will take back our streets and ensure that criminals realize that our citizens rights to a god quality of life will be protected, said Mayor Ireton.

"This grant announcement means that keeping our streets safe will remain a priority in these tough economic times and I'm proud to support it on behalf of the families of Salisbury," said Congressman Frank Kratovil.

Seeing all the different law enforcement agencies standing side by side supporting this grant as well as committing their efforts together to reduce crime is a breath of fresh air. Mayor Ireton stated that it was said by him 2 years ago he will do everything in his powers to make Salisbury the safest community in Maryland and this is a major step in the right direction.

Another Good Deed on Delmarva

Among all the unthinkable crimes going on here locally on Delmarva, we are all WELL AWARE that they're are still locals out there willing to go the extra mile to make a difference in our community. . . Miss Sarah "Haleybug" Foxwell comes to mind right away.

My best friend, Sally, has been battling brain cancer for over 1 1/2 years now. She has been through 3 brain surgeries so far and still has a very long road ahead of her. Her last surgery (just weeks ago) found a different brain cancer and is even more progressive than the other. My heart breaks for her everyday for there is no cure for her condition. Her cancer location in her brain affected her entire right side. She went from working 3 jobs to nothing in the blink of an eye. She has a housefull with husband, 3 children, 1 stepchild and 3 cats. Her husband cannot keep up with the bills. They struggle from day to day with everyday bills.

Anyway...

I was talking to Sally Monday night. She had said that her heat has been broken all winter and now that it's gotten extremely cold out, the portable ceramic heaters they have been using is not keeping the house warm. They didn't know anyone (friends) that had any expertise in HVAC, so they just went without heat since they have no money to call a repairman for repairs. My heart broke for her and the family.

So yesterday, Sally calls me practically in tears. . . asking me if I had sent over someone to fix the heat. I looked at my husband with tears in my eyes, knowing he had once again, helped out my best friend. My hubby had called our good friend, Jeff Bradford with OC Comfort Services yesterday morning and told him about the situation. Within hours, he was knocking on their door to look at their heat (or lack thereof). Not only did Jeff come over within hours, he also had diagnosed the problem, called his Rheem representative in Seaford for the part needed, and had the sales rep meet him in Berlin with the part. By sundown yesterday, my best friend and her family had heat!!!!

Mr. Bradford did this for FREE. He understood their situation. He has a wife and kids and mortgage of his own, but knew our cry for help for my best friend. Words cannot express the gratitude I feel for such a gesture of good faith. Thank you, thank you, thank you !!!

For such a good deed, I ask everyone of SBYNEWS, please, if you ever need a technician for heating, air conditioning, Jeff Bradford with OC Comfort Services is the man to call. He also works on refrigeration equipment for businesses, as he has several restaurant accounts in Ocean City. His business is newer than others out there locally, but his experience is well over 15 years. My house was built last spring, and he installed our heatpumps and all ductwork, start to finish with an awesome untouchable price.

Andy Harris For Congress 2010

ANNAPOLIS--State Senator Andy Harris, M.D., yesterday formally announced his candidacy for Maryland's First Congressional District. Harris said his campaign will emphasize the need for good-paying jobs, a strong economy, ending Washington's wasteful spending, and protecting American citizens and values. Harris made the announcement at four campaign stops throughout the district that drew several hundred supporters.

"I entered public life because my parents instilled in me the honor of serving," Harris said. "I have made improving our communities my life's work, as a doctor, as a Navy Medical Corps veteran, and as an elected official in Annapolis. I now want to serve the citizens of Maryland's First District in Congress and will work hard every day to be their next representative in Washington."

Harris continued, "The citizens of the First District want to find and keep good-paying jobs while providing a good future for our children and grandchildren. We want to protect the way of life that made the district a wonderful place to live, raise a family, and earn a living. What we do not want is our member of Congress to be one person at home and another person in Washington. We do not want huge tax hikes put on us from Washington to pay for a government that is out of control. We do not want to write the checks for political payoffs and far-left policies. We want our doctors and patients to make our health care decisions, not Washington bureaucrats with no medical experience. We want our government to protect us from those that seek to destroy us, our way of life and the American values that we treasure. We want our elected officials to vote according to their constituents, not their party bosses. That is why we need a new Congressman and why I will work every day to earn the votes of the great citizens of Maryland's First District so that we can get our nation back on the right track and on the road to prosperity."

Dr. Harris has a distinguished record as a three-term State Senator in Annapolis fighting for fiscal responsibility and strengthening Maryland’s families by promoting job creation, smaller government, and the need for tax relief, not increased burdens on Maryland taxpayers. Harris resides in Maryland’s First Congressional District with homes in Cockeysville and Cambridge that he shares with his wife and five children. He is a practicing obstetric anesthesiologist, with an appointment at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine as an Associate Professor of Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine, as well as practicing at Easton Memorial Hospital and Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury. He served our country in the United States Naval Reserve for 17 years, achieving the rank of Commander, and is a member of the American Legion.

East Coast Iron, Inc. is a full service certified welding and fabrication business. They handle a large variety of projects. Editors Note: It cracked me up yesterday, (top photo) when Congressional Candidate Andy Harris held up a brochure from Frank Kratovil, (paid for by taxpayers) mailed out by the tens of thousands stating, "Working to cut taxes and fight wasteful spending." I thought I was going to fall on the floor laughing. An in depth interview with Andy Harris can be seen on this week's "Joe Albero Show" a special 1 hour long broadcast.

Don't Throw It Away!

Many of you in Maryland have just received an envelope in the mail from the Director of the State of Maryland's Department of Assessments and Taxation. Every property owner in the state got or will get one, informing him or her of the state's most recent reckoning of the dollar value of each property. Properties are periodically reevaluated by the state and the information made known to municipal and county governments. These governments base changes in their property taxation rates according to the new dollar assessments provided by the state. County and municipal corporations will present their new property tax rates at public hearings in the spring. Tax bills will be issued in July or August.

Here's why you shouldn't throw this letter away without reading it:
Many owner-occupied properties in Maryland receive or are eligible to receive the Homestead Tax Credit. The HTC limits the assessment value on which your county and municipal real estate taxes are based, and can provide a significant reduction in how much tax is due. This reduction can mean hundreds if not thousands of dollars in county and city or town property tax savings for each qualifying homeowner.

Interested in being, or already a recipient of the HTC?

A one-time application is now required to continue or to begin receiving the Homestead Tax Credit.

The application form, which takes about 3 minutes to fill out, is included with the letter. Also included is a stamped return envelope, an increasingly rare government gesture that makes life just a little bit easier.

Brooke Mulford Update

1 YEAR ANNIVERSARY!

Well, here we are, exactly one year from the day that Brooke was diagnosed! It feels like a lifetime to me and I know that our lives have been forever changed. I am not the same person I was 1 year ago today. My faith has grown stronger. I really don’t know how a parent survives their child being diagnosed with cancer without having a relationship with God. I know that my faith has been tested many times on this journey but I also know that I always feel the most at peace when I focus on scripture. I know that there are a great number of prayers going up for Brooke everyday and I know that God is listening and I thank everyone for that from the bottom of my heart. I believe with all that I am that God has great plans for Brooke. We have been so blessed by the love and support that we have received and look forward to being able to pay it forward to others going through difficult times.

To recap what Brooke has been through this past year:

8 rounds of chemo (the last 2 of which were lethal doses followed by 2 Stem Cell Transplants), 3 surgeries (2 med comp “tubies” placements in January ’09 and her right Adrenal Gland was removed in May), her own stem cells were harvested for transplant in Feb, she had 12 rounds of radiation to her skull, abdomen & both femurs, 4 ambulance trips from PRMC in Salisbury to CHOP, dozens of blood and platelet transfusions (I lost track long ago of how many), 1 MRI, 5 Bone Marrow Biopsies (I think), numerous MIBG scans, Echocardiograms, EKG’s, X-rays & CT scans (have you seen the recent reports regarding the dangers of having too many CT scans? They said a person having 5 CT’s in a lifetime is like the equivalent of Hiroshima to the body…Brooke’s already had that many and many more to come), she has completed 2 of 5 rounds of antibodies & IL2, she has high frequency hearing loss as a result of the chemo and will be getting hearing aids for both ears, she has spent approximately 25 weeks as an inpatient in the hospital (not including the 2 ½ weeks outpatient for radiation at Univ of Penn).

In the process she has become an unknowing poster child for Neuroblastoma and pediatric cancer with her story being told in USA Today, Salisbury’s The Daily Times, SBYNEWS, Cool Kids Campaign newspaper, local tv stations WBOC & WMDT and Philadelphia’s Action News. Last month my mom was in a waiting room reading south jersey’s The Courier Post newspaper and Brooke’s picture was in there for a story about kids who beat cancer still face heart risks (nothing about Brooke in the story they just used her picture-she must be the stock photo for pediatric cancer now)! Any attention that will help bring awareness to NB and pediatric cancer is definitely a blessing as the funding is scarce.

Salisbury, MD & my hometown Westmont, NJ have rallied together to form Team Brooke and had numerous fundraisers for Brooke’s medical bills and for the NB Research Fund that we have created at CHOP in Brooke’s name. There were golf tournaments, bonfires, beef & beers, basket bingos, walks, concerts, sub sales, bake sales, and so many others. So many people have come together to help our family and we will forever be grateful.

This year has been a rollercoaster and it’s not over yet but we are getting there. I’m attaching a couple of videos I’ve made. The first one I posted about a month ago with the first couple months of Brooke’s journey and the second picks up around where the first leaves off. Hope you enjoy them and thank you again for coming along for the ride.

Should US Let Homeowners Modify Their Mortgages?

I’d be curious to see local opinion’s on this one!

Poll: Should US Let Homeowners Modify Their Mortgages? The Obama administration's $75 billion program to protect homeowners from foreclosure has been widely pronounced a disappointment, and some economists and real estate experts now contend it has done more harm than good.

Divorce Agreement

Dear American liberals, leftists, social progressives, socialists, Marxists and Obama supporters, et al:

We have stuck together since the late 1950's, but the whole of this latest election process has made me realize that I want a divorce. I know we tolerated each other for many years for the sake of future generations, but sadly, this relationship has run its course. Our two ideological sides of America cannot and will not ever agree on what is right so let's just end it on friendly terms. We can smile and chalk it up to irreconcilable differences and go our own way.

Here is a model separation agreement:

Our two groups can equitably divide up the country by landmass each taking a portion. That will be the difficult part, but I am sure our two sides can come to a friendly agreement. After that it should be relatively easy! Our respective representatives can effortlessly divide other assets since both sides have such distinct and disparate tastes.

We don't like redistributive taxes so you can keep them. You are welcome to the liberal judges and the ACLU. Since you hate guns and war, we'll take our firearms, the cops, the NRA and the military. You can keep Oprah, Michael Moore and Rosie O'Donnell (You are, however, responsible for finding a bio- diesel vehicle big enough to move all three of them).

We'll keep the capitalism, greedy corporations, pharmaceutical companies, Wal-Mart and Wall Street. You can have your beloved homeless, homeboys, hippies and illegal aliens. We'll keep the hot Alaskan hockey moms, Ted Nugent fans and rednecks. We'll keep the Bibles and give you NBC and Hollywood .

You can make nice with Iran and Palestine and we'll retain the right to invade and hammer places that threaten us. You can have the peaceniks and war protesters. When our allies or our way of life are under assault, we'll help provide them security.

We'll keep our Judeo-Christian values.. You are welcome to Islam, Scientology, Humanism and Shirley McClain. You can also have the U.N.. but we will no longer be paying the bill.

We'll keep the SUVs, pickup trucks and oversized luxury cars. You can take every Subaru station wagon you can find.

You can give everyone healthcare if you can find any practicing doctors. We'll continue to believe healthcare is a luxury and not a right. We'll keep Dixie,The Battle Hymn of the Republic and the National Anthem. I'm sure you'll be happy to substitute Imagine, I'd Like to Teach the World to Sing, Kum Ba Ya or We Are the World.

We'll practice trickle down economics and you can give trickle up poverty your best shot. Since it often so offends you, we'll keep our history, our name and our flag.

Would you agree to this? If so, please pass it along to other like minded liberal and conservative patriots and if you do not agree, just hit delete. In the spirit of friendly parting, I'll bet you which one of us will need whose help in 15 years.

Sincerely,

John J. Wall

Law Student and an American

Taliban

A fleeing Taliban, desperate for water, was plodding through the Afghanistan desert when he saw something far off in the distance. Hoping to find water, he hurried toward the object, only to find a little old Jewish man at a small stand selling ties.

The Taliban asked, Do you have water?

The Jewish man replied, I have no water. Would you like to buy a tie? They are only $5.

The Taliban shouted, "Idiot! I do not need an over-priced tie. I need water! I should kill you, but I must find water first!"

OK, said the old Jewish man, it does not matter that you do not want to buy a tie and that you hate me. I will show you that I am bigger than that.

If you continue over that hill to the east for about two miles, you will find a lovely restaurant run by my brother. It has all the ice cold water you need. Shalom.

Muttering, the Taliban staggered away over the hill. Several hours later he staggered back, almost dead. Your ****ing brother won't let me in without a tie!

Mikulski's Response To Global Warming vs The Economy

Dear Mr. Bullard:

Thank you for getting in touch with me about a cap and trade system to reduce global warming pollution. It's good to hear from you.

I appreciate hearing of your opposition to the American Clean Energy and Security Act of 2009 (H.R. 2454) and the Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act. H.R. 2454 has passed the House of Representatives. The Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act (S. 1733) was passed by the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works on November 5, 2009. Both of these bills would establish a cap and trade system to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

I agree that Congress must consider the impact of this legislation on our economy and on American jobs. America's dependence on foreign oil and global warming must be addressed in a way that strengthens our economy.

Knowing of your views and concerns will be helpful as the Senate addresses the issue of climate change.

Thanks once again for writing. Please let me know if I can be of assistance in the future.

Sincerely,

Two New York Men Arrested For Big Z's Lighthouse Bar Burglary

Location: Big Z’s Lighthouse Bar and Grill, 26089 Long Neck, Long Neck, DE

Date of Occurrence: Friday, January 1st 2010, at approximately 5:00 am

Defendants:
Steven Guadalupe, 23 years old, of Brooklyn, NY
Daniel Kurzweil, 19 years old, of Staten Island, NY

Resume: Troopers arrested two men from New York in connection with a New Years Day Burglary in Lewes, DE.

Troopers responded to Big Z’s Lighthouse Bar and Grill on New Years Day morning to make contact with the owner of the property about the burglary. When Troopers arrived on the scene they interviewed the business owner in reference to the incident. The two suspects, who are both former employees of Big Z’s Lighthouse Bar and Grill, where also present. The owner of the business stated to police that he thought it was suspicious that the business was burglarized overnight, and both Steven Guadalupe, and Daniel Kurzweil showed up at the business in the early morning to take custody of property that they left behind one month ago.

The investigation revealed that Steven Guadalupe, and Daniel Kurzweil both drove down from New York to pick up Mr. Guadalupe’s radio that he never took when he left the business. When both Steven Guadalupe and Daniel Kurzweil arrived at Big Z’s Lighthouse Bar and Grill no one was there, so they decided to go into the business and get the radio on their own. The suspects entered the business through the rear door. Once inside the suspects removed money from the store’s register and office. The suspects also caused damage to the store’s video surveillance system, before fleeing with an undisclosed amount of money, and without the radio.

The suspects later returned to the business when the owner was present in an attempt to obtain the radio. The suspects acted as if they did not know what had occurred at the business. Troopers interviewed both suspects at the scene and upon determining the facts of the case both Steven Guadalupe, and Daniel Kurzweil were taken into custody without incident.

Steven Guadalupe was charged with Burglary 3rd (f), Possession Of Burglary Tools (f), Theft (m), Conspiracy 2nd (f), and Criminal Mischief (m).

Daniel Kurzweil was also charged with Burglary 3rd (f), Possession Of Burglary Tools (m), Theft (m), Conspiracy 2nd (f), and Criminal Mischief (m).

Both Steven Guadalupe, and Daniel Kurzweil were arraigned on their charges, and committed to Sussex Correctional Institute in lieu of $6,000 cash bail.
