H1N1 flu shots give pregnant women pause
Doctors will need to ease concerns about future reactions

"People are torn," said Dr. Elaine Lim, an obstetrician at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson. Lim will be advising that her pregnant patients be vaccinated, based on the recommendation of her medical society, but she understands the angst. "If we don't really know much about the vaccine, it's hard to tell them it's 100 percent safe," she said. "I don't think anyone can really say for sure, because it's not really known."

The CDC's Sheedy said public opinion is starting to move in favor of getting vaccinated, with 55 percent of respondents in a recent Gallup poll saying they would do so. "Public interest in the vaccine is one of those uncertain factors," she said. "A lot of different things will impact it. It's quite possible it will change on a dime. All it will take is a couple of cases of well-publicized deaths, especially among children."

Gleason knows she is among that high-priority group. Not only does she care for her daughter Naomi, she is pregnant and due in March. And she works part time at Nighttime Pediatrics in Pasadena as a front-desk clerk, greeting coughing, sneezing, feverish patients.

URGENT REC & PARKS BUDGET MEETING

Dear Recreation and Parks Stakeholder:

Over the last several days many of you have likely been following the media coverage regarding the fiscal crisis taking place within the state of Maryland and the spin-off effect it is having upon the Wicomico County government.

The information the State has shared with the County has been unlike any news we’ve received in the past. The news was unexpected and has created difficult challenges that require quick action on the part of the county government.

Many changes have been prepared that will be presented to the County Council by the County Executive at their September 15th meeting. Every effort has been made to be responsible, yet fair, in the decisions that have been made. However the changes have been extreme in some cases. We value the time and effort you have committed to the Department and need to share these changes with you.

A meeting has been set for Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at 7:00 PM in the

Da Nang Room of the Wicomico County Youth & Civic Center. The goal is to communicate the changes to the Recreation & Parks budget with you for a clear understanding of their impact.

We look forward to seeing you Tuesday evening.

Sincerely,

Gary W. Mackes

Director

NEW PREAMBLE TO THE CONSTITUTION

This is probably the best e-mail I've seen in a long, long time. The following has been attributed to State Representative Mitchell Kaye from GA. This guy should run for President one day....

"We the sensible people of the United States, in an attempt to help everyone get along, restore some semblance of justice, avoid more riots, keep our nation safe, promote positive behavior, and secure the blessings of debt-free liberty to ourselves and our great-great-great-grandchildren, hereby try one more time to ordain and establish some common sense guidelines for the terminally whiny, guilt ridden, delusional, and other liberal bed-wetters. We hold these truths to be self evident: that a whole lot of people are confused by the Bill of Rights and are so dim they require a Bill of NON-Rights."

ARTICLE I: You do not have the right to a new car, big screen TV, or any other form of wealth. More power to you if you can legally acquire them, but no one is guaranteeing anything.

ARTICLE II: You do not have the right to never be offended. This country is based on freedom, and that means freedom for everyone -- not just you! You may leave the room, turn the channel, express a different opinion, etc; but the world is full of idiots, and probably always will be.

ARTICLE III: You do not have the right to be free from harm. If you stick a screwdriver in your eye, learn to be more careful; do not expect the tool manufacturer to make you and all your relatives independently wealthy..

ARTICLE IV: You do not have the right to free food and housing. Americans are the most charitable people to be found, and will gladly help anyone in need, but we are quickly growing weary of subsidizing generation after generation of professional couch potatoes who achieve nothing more than the creation of another generation of professional couch potatoes ...

ARTICLE V: You do not have the right to free health care. That would be nice, but from the looks of public housing, we're just not interested in public health care.

ARTICLE VI: You do not have the right to physically harm other people. If you kidnap, rape, intentionally maim, or kill someone, don't be surprised if the rest of us want to see you fry in the electric chair.

ARTICLE VII: You do not have the right to the possessions o f others. If you rob, cheat, or coerce away the goods or services of other citizens, don't be surprised if the rest of us get together and lock you away in a place where you still won't have the right to a big screen color TV or a life of leisure.

ARTICLE VIII: You do not have the right to a job. All of us sure want you to have a job, and will gladly help you along in hard times, but we expect you to take advantage of the opportunities of education and vocational training laid before you to make yourself useful. (AMEN!)

ARTICLE IX: You do not have the right to happiness. Being an American means that you have the right to PURSUE happiness, which by the way, is a lot easier if you are unencumbered by an over abundance of idiotic laws created by those of you who were confused by the Bill of Rights.

ARTICLE X: This is an English speaking country. We don't care where you are from, English is our language. Learn it or go back to wherever you came from! (Lastly....)

ARTICLE XI: You do not have the right to change our country's history or heritage. This country was founded on the belief in one true God. And yet, you are given the freedom to believe in any religion, any faith, or no faith at all; with no fear of persecution. The phrase IN GOD WE TRUST is part of our heritage and history, and if you are uncomfortable with it, TOUGH!

Last week’s Comments got misconbobbled in the listing of the Salisbury soda bottles so I am going to try again. Being a techno-dinosaur does have its limitations.

A Letter To The Editor

One question we've all had on our minds.. what is the big rush with getting this "healthcare" bill passed? Why are Obama and the dems, particularly Reid/Pelosi so adamant and determined to jam this thing through by Thanksgiving (how ironic..)?

Is this to fix a system that is so badly broken that it's on the edge of collapse, as they would have us believe (thereby creating the necessary 'Rahm Emanuel crisis', and the excuse to go radical)?

I think the whole thing boils down to this-- the 1000+ pages of healthcare proposals put forth thus far by the dems (written secretly in back rooms with everybody but the highest-level dems locked out), along with the cap-and-tax proposals already passed hurriedly by the House contain most of the clauses and legalese needed for a transfer of much of the government's power and authority to the White House.

This isn't so much about healthcare. It's about taking over the government.

The original plan of releasing a bill too big to read before it was jammed through almost worked, but they failed to consider that even some of their own would balk at such an obvious attempt. And, fortunately, we the people awakened, and secured enough of a delay to read the thing and see what it actually said (detailed by the Indianapolis physician's letter you posted a few days ago..)

So now, they're in the corner, with the clock ticking.

One problem is that the 2010 election is coming up soon. They know if they don't jam this thing through quickly, the chances of getting it done are greatly diminished with members rushing to get back to their districts to try to save their jobs.

I think there may be a second reason they want to get this in place quickly-- they see that the election is not going to go well for them, and if the right tools are in place, they can provoke the opposition and create a situation where they can declare martial law (though they will dress it up a little-- calling it a National Emergency, an Homeland Security Emergency or whatever..) and take full control of the government.

Creating the disaster that they can/will use to take control is already well underway. The debt load is causing tremendous anxiety in world markets, countries are dumping their US currency reserves, and the value of the dollar has been in free-fall. Our economic fate is largely in China's hands, and they're looking for their exit strategy.

I look for the radical left to boldly force this legislation through (as they've hinted) through parliamentary tricks. At this point, I don't think they care whether that makes us mad or not-- they plan to charge ahead full speed.

Such a plan has a chance of achieving both of their goals.

If they succeed in passing it, they have many of their tools.

If they provoke the opposition into "intensely resisting" them, it may generate the situation they seek to use their tools.

Tension on Capitol Hill is rising quickly:

“If Democrats use controversial insider tactics to force a proposal that the majority of Americans disagree with, not only would they guarantee bipartisan opposition, but they would also spark a new level of outrage among a huge majority of people in this country," said a Senate Republican leadership aide.

No matter how it goes, this is a pivotal point in our history. It may be tempting to give up in frustration, but truth (and certainly the Constitution) are on our side.

Begin preparations now for 2010-- this next election will determine the fate of the United States. For the sake of our children, we must not fail.

‘HANDS OFF MY HEALTH CARE’ Bus Tour

Patients’ Rights Group Continues Maryland Leg of ‘HANDS OFF MY HEALTH CARE’ Bus Tour
Buses to meet activists as Patients First tour urges constituent action against a government takeover of health care

ANNAPOLIS, MD – Maryland members of Congress are back in Washington, and their constituents sent them off with a message: “Keep your hands off our health care!” Americans for Prosperity's Patients First Bus Tour invites citizens to come out and learn more about health reform and make their voices heard! The bus tour will continue its Maryland leg of the trip on Monday, September 14 in Annapolis and will urge constituents to speak out on behalf of patients and against a government takeover. The full schedule for Maryland is below.

For detailed information on the entire route or a complete tour schedule please visit www.JoinPatientsFirst.com.

“Americans are fired up about health care, and the bus tour gives more people the opportunity to come out and get involved,” said Amy Menefee, spokesperson for Patients First. “They’ve heard enough proposals from Washington that give government all the decision-making power. It is time for citizens to tell their legislators to stop, turn around, and pursue real reforms that put patients first.”

Citizens will be urged to call their senators, visit their district offices, and sign the Patients First petition. The petition asks all members of Congress to oppose any legislation that imposes greater government control over health care and results in fewer choices for patients and their families. It can be viewed at www.JoinPatientsFirst.com.

“These proposals would change everything about health care as we know it. Instead of patients and doctors making decisions, it would be government bureaucrats,” said Menefee. “We’ve got to let lawmakers know that the American people simply don’t want a government takeover of their health care.”

WHAT IT IS THAT DIVIDES US

Is it being politically correct to hyphenate who we are? We are, Italian-Americans, Afro-Americans, Irish-Americans, Chinese-Americans, Jewish-Americans and on and on. My belief is that if you need to be hyphenated your living in the wrong country. In this country we are Americans. Does anyone remember the 442nd regimental combat team? They fought and died to be called Americans.*

Labels divide us as Republicans, Democrats, Liberals, Conservatives or Independents. Again, are we not just Americans? Do we not still believe this country is the "Great Melting Pot" into which we arrived to be formed into Americans? I am as guilty as the next fellow for falling into this trap. I don't know how it started, but I do know it must end. It wont end By Political Party, Presidential or Congressional action. The media is too fond of labels to put a stop to using them. It is, therefore, up to each and every one of us to stand proudly and proclaim, I am an American and not a hyphen. We might then start working for the common good.

* for those too young to know, the 442nd were American soldiers whose ancestors immigrated from Japan prior to WW II.

Welcome To Da Bronx

Oh, sorry, I meant to say Downtown Salisbury.

Perspective In Truth

One day , the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live.
They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.

On their return from their trip , the father asked his son , "How was the trip?"

"It was great , Dad."

"Did you see how poor people live?" the father asked.

"Oh yeah , " said the son.

"So , tell me , what did you learn from the trip?" asked the father.

The son answered:

"I saw that we have one dog and they had four.

We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end.

We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night.

Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon.

We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight.

We have servants who serve us , but they serve others.

We buy our food , but they grow theirs.

We have walls around our property to protect us , they have friends to protect them."

The boy's father was speechless.

Then his son added, "Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are."

Grandma's Boyfriend

A 5-year-old boy went to visit his grandmother one day. Playing with
his toys in her bedroom while grandma was dusting, he looked up and
said, 'Grandma, how come you don't have a boyfriend now that Grandpa
went to heaven?'

Grandma replied, 'Honey, my TV is my boyfriend.. I can sit in my
bedroom and watch it all day long. The religious programs make me feel
good and the comedies make me laugh. I'm happy with my TV as my
boyfriend.'

Grandma turned on the TV, and the reception was terrible. She started
adjusting the knobs, trying to get the picture in focus. Â Frustrated,
she started hitting the backside of the TV hoping to fix the problem.

The little boy heard the doorbell ring, so he hurried to open the door
and there stood Grandma's minister. The minister said, 'Hello son, is
your Grandma home?'

The little boy replied, 'Yeah, she's in the bedroom bangin' her
boyfriend..'

The minister fainted.
