Fundraiser For The Main Street Gym

Fernando Guerrero came to Salisbury, Maryland at the age of 11. Three years
later he began boxing at Main Street Gym. His trainer and manager Hal Chernoff
saw Guerrero's potential. As an amateur fighter he compiled an impressive 130-10
record. He turned professional in December of 2008 after just missing the cut
for the Olympics. His record now stands at 9-0, with 9 knock-outs.

But, it is what Fernando does outside of the ring that has made him such a high
profile figure in Wicomico County. His dedication to the youth in the area truly
sets him apart. As a Wicomico Mentor, he spends afternoons working with at-risk
youth at Main Street Gym. Fernando also attends events, like Field Day, at his
former schools.

On September 13th a benefit will be held at Chef Fred's in Salisbury for
Fernando and Main Street Gym, a non-profit organization. The night will
include wine and hor d'oeuvres. There will also be a silent auction including
jewelry from Kuhn's, Market Street, sports memorabilia, and much more. Tickets
for the event are $100 - checks can be made out to Main Street Gym.

Tickets will be available at Salisbury News 300 W. Main Street on the Downtown Plaza. There are only 125 tickets to be had so it is a first come, first serve event. Remember Ladies & Gentlemen, Hal Chernoff has spent years working his heart out for hundreds of children throughout the years offering them an incredible place to structure their lives. The $100.00 per ticket is really a donation to the Main Street Gym. Jennifer and I will be attending and every single person I have called so far has agreed to attend. That being said, please don't wait to get your tickets as I can assure you this will be sold out extremely fast!

My contact information is above and I cannot hold tickets for anyone calling in. You truly need to come by from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM to get your tickets.

OCPD Officers Injured After Drunk Driver Hits Two Stopped Police Cars

On August 23, 2008 at about 2:40 hours, two marked Ocean City Police cars were stopped one behind the other, at the northbound traffic light in the turn lane of 48th Street and Coastal Highway.

A vehicle described as an “Infiniti G37” being driven by Ferris Edmund Hickey, IV, (34) years of age, of Cary, North Carolina, failed to stop and struck OCPD marked police car #878 forcing it into the rear end of a second marked OCPD police car #860.

OCPD Officers Leon Lacy and Justin Hoban who were operating each of the marked OCPD vehicles immediately exited their police cars and checked on the driver of the vehicle which had just struck them.

OCPD Traffic Safety Units responded to the scene. Both Officers Lacy and Hoban were transported to Atlantic General Hospital and treated for minor injuries and released. Hickey was not injured.

OCPD Traffic Safety Officers suspected Hickey may be intoxicated at the time of the crash. Officers administered several field sobriety tests, which Hickey failed to successfully complete. Hickey agreed to take a breath test which resulted in Hickey having a blood alcohol content of over .16. Hickey has been charged with:

MD/TA 21-902a 1-Driving under the influence of alcohol
MD/TA 21-902 a 2-Driving under the influence per se
MD/TA 21-902 b 1-Drivng while impaired by alcohol
MD/TA 21-801(b) - Failure to control speed to avoid collision
MD/TA 21-901.1(b) - Negligent driving

Hickey was seen by an Ocean City District Court Commissioner and was held on $3500 bond.

The OCPD would like to remind citizens that excessive alcoholic beverage consumption can impair your judgment. If you drink and drive and you are caught, you will be charged. In this case the suspected drunk driver did not stop and collided with two marked police vehicles. This incident could have resulted in a tragic and senseless loss of life. In this case both police cars were badly damaged and are out of
service for an extended period of time.

Ocean City Police urge drivers who have had too much to drink, to please use public transportation or take a taxi. If you are not from Ocean City, bartenders and most businesses will call you a cab to ensure you and everyone on the roads can get to their residences safely.

Wife Sets Husband’s Harley Davidson Motorcycle On Fire

On 08/23/08, at 8:05 pm, OCPD Officers responded to the area of 105 7th Street, in
reference to a motorcycle reported to be on fire.

Officers arrived at the scene and observed a Harley Davidson Motorcycle to be on fire.

Officers saw a male, later identified as the owner of the motorcycle, Joseph Lawrence
Waskey (40) years of age, of Ocean City, holding a garden hose attempting to put the
fire out. Officers used fire extinguishers eventually putting out the fire.
Deputy Fire Marshal Cliff Christello determined the fire had been deliberately set.

Investigation determined that Joseph Waskey’s wife identified as Barbara Waskey, (43)
years of age, of Rogersville, Tennessee, had left the area at the time of the fire.
Barbara Waskey returned to the scene and spoke to Police as well as Fire Marshal
personnel.

determined Barbara removed the motorcycle’s gas cap, stuffed a towel in the open gas
tank, and set the towel on fire. After which Barbara left the area. Investigators also recovered the motorcycle’s gas cap from Barbara Waskey’s car after she returned to the scene.

Ocean City Deputy Fire Marshal, Cliff Christello placed Barbara Waskey placed under

Obama's VP Pick Hardly Inspiring

By The Denver Post -- 08/25/2008

Barack Obama must think he brings enough excitement to his presidential ticket all by himself.
His selection of Joe Biden as his running mate was hardly bold or inspiring for a campaign that, at its heart, is about change. And adding a longtime Washington insider to the ticket isn't likely to invigorate a campaign that's dropped a few points in the polls, nor will it help Obama in the Western states he so badly needs to win.

He had better options — Sen. Hillary Clinton and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson, to quickly name two — but instead of going bold, Obama chose someone who wouldn't suck all of the air out of the room when he's in it.

And he chose someone who, quite honestly, could become a liability as the campaign wears on. Biden has a way of sticking his foot in his mouth when he's speaking off the cuff. Just ask Obama, about whom Biden said: "I mean, you got the first mainstream African-American who is articulate and bright and clean and a nice-looking guy."

Much like when George W. Bush selected Dick Cheney to shore up his lack of foreign-policy credentials, Obama tabbed Biden to add some world-affairs depth to the ticket. He does bring that, but is it enough?

He also brings some serious liabilities, including the allegations of plagiarism that drove him from the presidential race two decades ago. It was embarrassing and dishonest.

Such weaknesses could make the focus of this presidential campaign more about Biden and less about the important issues facing this country, such as the economy, the war in Iraq and energy policy.

We hope that isn't the case. But almost instantaneously, the Republicans let fly with attack ads in which Biden questioned Obama's readiness to be president. Surely, more such ads and questions will follow.

To be sure, if Obama is elected, Biden could be a great asset in getting legislation through Congress. It's one thing to have ideas, but it's another to convert those into policy that can change people's lives. Health care, energy and immigration policy all are areas in which Congress is sure to be involved if comprehensive solutions are to be achieved.

However, experience is a double-edged sword. Biden's spending six terms in the Senate doesn't fit with Obama's promises of change.

In fact, it's a surprising status- quo decision.

One of the first tests of a presidential candidate's judgment is their selection for running mate.

In that crucial first test, Obama seems to have failed.

WATCH YOUR STEP!

If you happen to enjoy walking on the River Walk Downtown, be careful where you step. The above photo shows an expansion crack where the concrete walk way has obviously shifted causing a serious hazard. This is just a small example of what I meant by Mayor Tilghman not caring at all about the infrastructure within the City of Salisbury.

A Letter To The Editor

Good morning Joe! As always, love the blog and please keep it up! Seems like the only way we know what is really happening in Salisbury.

I was wondering if you could put something up this weekend as I felt I was getting a little scammed and do not want this to happen to anyone else. I’m sure there are so many it’s not even funny. My sister and I went into Superfresh this Friday evening to take advantage of the triple off coupons they were offering. This is the first time I have really done some serious shopping at this store in years. We got done and got to the register and when the kid was done scanning, I handed him my coupons. I then tried to hand him my super fresh bonus card and he told me I had already given it. I told him I hadn’t and he needed to scan it because there was no way my total was what it was. He did it and it came down. I still thought it looked funny but waited till I got the receipt to check it over. He started to scan my sisters stuff next. I looked at the receipt and realized they had only doubled my coupons! I said something to the guy at the register and after about 2 mins he says, well you gave me the coupons first, you’re supposed to give your card first then coupons. I asked him why he didn’t tell me that before I gave him the coupons if that was such an important piece of information and he just said you have to do it that way first or it doesn’t work. I then asked him why there wasn’t signs posted on the registers or even on their weekly circular stating this. He just kept scanning. The girl next to him looked at the receipt and didn’t say anything. I asked her if they could fix it. She said you’ll have to come back tomorrow to customer service to get them too. I asked them how many other people this had happened to that they didn’t care to tell and she just handed me the receipt and turned back to her register. The lady who I guessed was the manager came by (she was the one they kept having fix things on the register) and I told her about what happened and asked her if she could fix it. She said she didn’t even know they were doing triple coupons that week and no she couldn’t help me either (they were closing in 5 min.). Needless to say my sister gave her card first and then her coupons and it worked great. I came in the next morning to get it fixed and the girl (along with the 2 lady’s the night before and the boy on the register) was extremely rude. I told her what had happened and that I would like the amount that didn’t get tripled back. I couldn’t believe it, but she started fussing at me because I didn’t hand them the card first then the coupons! I told her first of all, the kid at the register tried to tell me I had given it to him. Second of all he never mentioned to me that I had to give that to him first, because believe me I would have to have not had to have come back to the store the next morning. Third, if that information is so important they needed to let people know when they got to the register first and have it on their flier. I told her I guess they didn’t want to do that though because it seemed that they made more money with less people knowing. She didn’t say another word to me and handed me my money.

I was rather insulted that they had done this to me and wanted to get on me for not doing it and also for the fact that so many others have probably been some what taken by this also if they didn’t look at the receipts. I am today writing the main office in New Jersey and am going to call the Area Manager. I figured it didn’t hurt to get the word out though for all of the others that still want to take advantage of this great deal! Money is tight for everyone.

Thanks and have a great day!

Age And Wisdom

A guy is 70 years old and loves to fish. He was sitting in his boat the other day when he heard a voice say,

'Pick me up.'He looked around and couldn't see any one. He thought he was dreaming when he heard the voice say again,'Pick me up.'

He looked in the water and there, floating on the top, was a frog.

The man said, 'Are you talking to me?'

The frog said, 'Yes, I'm talking to you. Pick me up then, kiss me and I'll turn into the most beautiful woman you have ever seen. I'll make sure that all your friends are envious and jealous because I will be your bride!'

The man looked at the frog for a short time, reached over, picked it up carefully, and placed it in his front breast pocket.

Then the frog said, 'What, are you nuts? Didn't you hear what I said? I said kiss me and I will be your beautiful bride.'

He opened his pocket, looked at the frog and said,

'Nah, at my age I'd rather have a talking frog.'

With age comes wisdom.

A Soldier's Welcome Home Part I

Marine Brian Mason was blown away Friday when he walked off his Plane at the Wicomico Airport and into the main terminal area where he was addressed by more than 300+ of the finest men, women and children from the Eastern Shore.

Brian had just returned from Iraq and we wanted to make sure he knew exactly how much we appreciate what he and all of the Soldiers are doing for all of us here in the United States.

Brian and his Family were escorted from the Airport to the Hebron Fire Department by motorcycle enthusiasts as well as the Wicomico County Sheriff's Department.

Ladies & Gentlemen, if you have not attended one of these events, they are simply unbelievable. I have spoken to Brian's Family since this event and they assure me they will be attending every one of the other Soldiers returning to Wicomico County when they too return home.

Salisbury News will continue to Post the dates and times of each one of these events and we truly encourage you to come out and participate.

WELCOME HOME BRIAN AND THANK YOU. Another special thanks goes out to We Care Wicomico and Mrs. Linda Kent!

I Just Couldn't Resist Taking These Pictures

While camping this weekend I happened to have my camera on the table outside and saw this young girl riding her bicycle and talking on her cell phone at the same time. By the time she gets her drivers license she'll be an expert at multi tasking while driving, won't she?

OFFICER DOWN

Last night an emergency call went out stating an Officer was down. Fortunately this was not a life threatening situation and the Officer is recovering from his injury.

The Maryland State Police and the Wicomico County Sheriff's Office responded to a call in Quantico. Allegedly the suspect t fled into the woods where the K-9 Dog and Officer went into the woods after the suspect. The Officer fell into a hole and twisted his ankle enough he couldn't walk on it.

Now came the bigger problem, finding him in the pitch dark deep in the woods. Several Officers arrived and the State Police Helicopter was able to help locate the injured Officer and get him back to the Ambulance where they could then take him to the Hospital.

In doing so, one State Trooper was actually bit by the K-9 Dog trying to help out. Hopefully we get an update on the Sheriff's Deputy that was injured. No word on the suspect either.

To The People Reading This Blog From Around The World.....

Yes, this is a street near the heart of the City of Salisbury created and designed by some of the biggest Idiots on the Eastern Shore.

I'd love to hear every one's input on if anyone else has ever seen a street anywhere like this in the entire UNITED STATES OF AMERICA?

The Salisbury/Wicomico County Democratic Club Crab Fiest

On Sunday the local Democrats got together at the Knights of Columbus for some fantastic crabs but more importantly, great fellowship.

Mr. Kratovil was not present but that didn't slow this group down from discussing the Campaign and their strong support for their Candidate for Congress. The crabs were very meaty and enjoyable and if it could have gone on for an additional 2 hours, my guess is that you'd see all of these people sticking around because they truly were having a great time.
