Wicomico Began Welcoming Some Students Back To School This Week

Small groups of Wicomico County students returned to school on Oct. 5 as part of the school system’s ongoing recovery efforts.

As Wicomico County Public Schools wrapped up its first month of virtual learning, Superintendent Donna Hanlin announced last week the school system’s plans for bringing back small groups of students beginning Monday.

“As of Oct. 5 we will have students coming to schools in small numbers for Special Education, English Language Learners, Career & Technical Education, secondary math tutoring and some Advanced Placement science labs,” Hanlin said in a message to families. “After that, working by grade level, we will gradually bring back students who choose to return.”

Beginning Oct. 19, prekindergarten students will return to the classroom in small numbers with health and safety precautions, Hanlin said, followed by kindergarten students a week later. Other grades and programs will follow in the weeks ahead with communication forthcoming for families, and as health conditions in the community allow.

“Please note that before a student may return to a school or use school transportation, a COVID-19 Parent/Guardian Agreement must be signed online,” Hanlin said. “The link will be provided by the student’s school when the student is identified as part of a group or grade that will be returning.”

School sports will not resume today, as previously planned.

Hanlin said the school system’s recovery plan, posted on www.wcboe.org, has been updated, and families are encouraged to review it.

  1. All moving so quickly, and most/all schools are not prepared to safely reopen according to established guidelines. Most/all classroom's are setup for social distancing, HVAC systems are not fully operational, and most schools have not been cleaned recently and transportation is not ready. Most/all schools do not have any or enough cleaning supplies, minimal PPE gear, etc, etc...Not sure how they are opening the schools while not following protocol's other than grant money influence.

    1. Quickly? We’ve been shut down since January

    2. Just about everything you said is false. The schools have been preparing for months. We've been closed since March 3:11

    3. No darling. The shut downs were in March.

  2. It is a good thing they return for their mental developement, also so that they are back with their fellow students learning, and just living again. Safe guards can be in place but this is good for the country, students and teachers.

  3. Well, well. No matter how much money your taxes go to fund good schools you actually question this? I would think all's well - given that they've had well over 8 months now to clean/fix/get ready for this.
Sorry 1:16 - NO MORE EXCUSES.
Open schools, open churches, open business.

  6. 1:16p...stop whining. Where are the mass hospitalizations and deaths among students and faculty from schools and colleges across the country that have been open for over a month? Were you concerned about Walmart’s air system for the last 7 months while you grocery shopped?

On a related note...this process is a jumbled mess. It was 1st communicated that it would be 4 days a week in person...now it’s only going to be 2 like Talbot county (mon/tue or Thursday/ fri). Parents already pulled kids out of daycares an can’t get spots back. Hanlin is not a leader. This plan could’ve been in place months ago, and let here we are...struggling from week to week with no leadership.

  8. There is virtually ZERO danger to reopening schools.

    2. 10:40 - I would venture a guess that the students attending private school are far better cared for by parents who take precautions and take care of themselves. The majority of the 200k+ deaths were the result of pre-existing conditions that covid made worse.... exactly the types of issues seen by a large segment of students and their families on the public school side of things.

    1. Be real 7:07 - there is no way the BOE will be defunded. Instead, if there is a mass exodus moving away / selecting home school/ private school is the only way any funding g will be cut. Did you miss the article a few weeks ago about continued building projects? The BOE juggernaut is full steam ahead with no impact on their bottom line. Just ask Brian Ashby.

  12. At least it’s safer than Somerset. 15-20 students in rooms that can safely have 10. Sending letters to parents saying buses would be safe with 12 students per bus. That lasted one whole day before they doubled it cramming 25 kids on a bus without telling parents

  18. @9:03 people die everyday, every year! In 2018 2,839,205 people in the US alone died! Was that enough for you? Numbers can be twisted and it has already been proven that they were! Is that a reason to keep children from learning? NO! Death is honestly a part of life! There is no stopping it!

You aren't voting on facts or science.

Covid cases are not covid sick people.
Every year people get sick from cold/flu and many die.
Every person who's died for any reason this year is tested for covid and if covid is found they are marked as died of covid.
Covid is only dangerous to someone who's got lots of health issues and is going to die anyway.
Go get tested you fool, you probably already have it or had it.

    People like you are lemmings.

    Go to hell!

Let go on with our lives and quit hold our children hostage to a failed system that only care about themselves and how much they can take and force on the rest of us.

I agree, Hanlin and Briggs are two of the dumbest and most arrogant idiots in the Wicomico County Public School System.

And Dave Hanlin, Donna's husband, is buddies with Len Foxwell and trying to be a part the Democrat deep state. They are buddies with John Cannon as well.
