Ohio market owners charged with running $10M food stamp fraud scheme

Two Somali specialty market owners in Ohio were recently charged with running a $10 million food stamp fraud operation.

Hassan Nuriso and Abdurahim Nuriso, former owners of Towfiq Market in Columbus, Ohio, were charged by a federal grand jury with conspiring to fraudulently redeem benefits over a nine-year period, according to WCMH.

“It’s very clear in all the regulations what you can and can’t do,” Assistant U.S. Attorney David Bosley said about the case. “You can’t give food stamps for cash, you can’t buy items that are not allowed under the food stamp program, you can’t buy things that aren’t food, and you can’t give credit.”

  1. Am I being racist when I think that it seems like the only markets that are being busted for food-stamp fraud are owned by immigrants?
I think I just read about this a week or so ago...someone from the middle-East.
"Hey, Akmed. Move to America, open a mini-mart and start a food-stamp scheme!!"

    1. I had business dealings with some of these criminals in ocean City. They under report their sales to avoid taxation and sales tax and the SNAP program has been a continuous windfall.

  5. The REAL theft occurred before they came out with the EBT cards and used books of coupons with numerical values on them. You talk about selling good subsidies for 50 cents on the dollar. Talk about taxpayers getting screwed

  7. Rules, laws, regulations, they are government issued for stupid Americans. Just look at all these similar crimes committed by immigrant business people. Locally we've seen Pakistani store owners go to prison for collecting sales taxes on the sales in their stores, but keeping the proceeds and not paying the state. They made a lot of money and invested in real estate before they were caught. I worked alongside of Indian / Pakistani immigrants for an extended period of time, and their culture has no respect for following rules and regulations, either in the workplace, or government issued. Cheating is what they do. They think Americans are "stupid" for following rules / laws, and at the same time, thinking they are superior for benefiting from not following any rules. It is a cultural, third world mentality. Coming to America and operating businesses does not change them and their culture. They do not come here to assimilate, they come here to profit.

You're absolutely right. I had to do business with them for 30 years, gave up on reporting their criminal activities to MD authorities - they did nothing.
