Roger Goodell Just Surrendered the NFL to the Anthem Protesters

Writing in this space on Tuesday, I way too graciously headlined a piece by saying: “In Case You Missed It, the NFL Might Have Caved On a Lot More Than Just the Anthem Protests.” I must apologize for using the word “might” in this headline. Because there’s no might about it, the NFL has completely caved on the anthem protests.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed the media on Wednesday, and made plain the fact that the NFL will only “encourage” their players to stand. The league will not “force” them to stand for the anthem.

“We believe that our players should stand for the national anthem,” Goodell said. “We want our players to stand, we’re going to continue to encourage them to stand.”

Goodell, proving that he has now made the transition from NFL commissioner to protester PR hack, explained that the players aren’t trying to disrespect the flag. “They are not doing this in any way to be disrespectful to the flag, but they also understand how it’s being interpreted, and that’s why we’re trying to deal with those underlying issues,” Goodell said.

  3. Roger Goodell needs a tank truck sized enema; he's that full of it.

Players are contracted employees, and NFL promptly exercises decisive control over color of their socks, what is on sides of their shoes, etc. And both players and fans/former fans know this.

When he's finished with the enema he can start getting testosterone shots. $40 million a year idiot. He needs to be on the waiver wire!

  4. Well, I hope they enjoy their place in history because that is exactly what they have become with all this unnecessary hoopla. HISTORY.

I want nothing to do with them, their league, their sponsors, their paraphernalia, their causes charity or otherwise. As far as I am concerned, everything and anything to do with them or that sport is just a figment of my imagination. I think it might have happened, but I'm really not quite sure.

  7. Hopefully the customer base will continue to erode. That people won't give in and go back to buying their product. I do not intend to watch another NFL game ever. I had been losing interest in it for years over the behavior and attitude of the players and now I am done.

  8. Goodall fails to understand that we fans come there looking for a respite from the issued of the day, a half day of freedom to just plain watch a sport and not be bothered with anything but "GAME".

That's why his fan base is walking out the door, PERIOD.

Baseball caught it early, NASCAR never went that route, and neither did any other sport. Wake up, Goodall, your bank in on the phone asking how you're going to back all those million dollar paychecks!
