JUST IN: Karen Handel Wins Georgia Special Election, Fending Off Upstart Democrat

ATLANTA — Karen Handel, a veteran Republican officeholder, overcame a deluge of liberal money to win a special House election in Georgia on Tuesday, bridging the divide in her own party between admirers of President Trump and those made uneasy by his turbulent new administration.

Ms. Handel, 55, fended off Jon Ossoff, a 30-year-old Democrat and political newcomer who emerged from obscurity to raise $25 million from progressives across the country eager to express their anger at Mr. Trump. That fervor quickly elevated what would otherwise have been a sleepy local race into a high-stakes referendum on Mr. Trump and the most expensive House campaign in history.

The surprisingly easy victory for Ms. Handel, a former Georgia secretary of state and Fulton County official, averted a humiliating upset for Republicans in an affluent, suburban Atlanta seat they have held for nearly 40 years. And it showed that Republicans skeptical of Mr. Trump remain comfortable supporting more conventional candidates from their party.

  3. The Dems did what they do best - wasting a lot of other people's money in an attempt to rule over all of us. Sounds a lot like socialism to me.

  4. Folks, this is HUGE to say the least. Finally, this should send a clear message to the Liberals that even with outside money you just do not have a message. The leopard is NOT going to change its spots, period. Now, Democrats, lets get off this side show smoke and mirror distraction and get to work reforming health care, welfare, and the tax code and finally MAGA!

  7. Go, Karen! I know that it was a tough race with lots of financial backing of your opponent from outside influence.

  11. They still don't get it. And that's fine..

They just burned through a LOT of money for nothing, even though they're deeply in debt. Just like they run the country.

But that's less money for them to use for the 2018 elections.

    Cool beans.
