Concealed Carry Bill Proposed for Congress Members

A Republican lawmaker introduced legislation Tuesday to let trained members of Congress carry guns for self-defense in the wake of last week's shooting at a GOP baseball practice.

Rep. Brian Babin, R-Texas, wants to ensure all lawmakers can qualify for concealed-carry permits that could be used in any state and "in nearly every conceivable scenario with only a few restrictions," The Washington Free Beacon reported.

For example, the bill would allow members of Congress to carry a concealed weapon in "federal parks and buildings, the national mall, to and from their offices, at schools and military bases" with just "a few limited restrictions," Babin's office said, Free Beacon reported.

Lawmakers currently face restrictions on carrying guns when they are in Washington; the District of Columbia has strict gun laws, and firearms are prohibited in the Capitol.

  2. If congress believes it to be a right to bear arms then why not normal citizens? In the times of random acts of terrorism and landmark murder rates our inalienable rights have been infringed upon for far too long. If the government is arming itself that is a scary thing our forefathers feared greatly and all of us now should aswell.

  4. well that took no time at all. It is amazing that it took that long for them to write "this bill" and propose that congress carry guns after one of there own goes after them. I mean come on I have to put my name in the public paper for 2 weeks, ask 3 people in my town to sign a paper, have an extensive background check and fingerprints, and sit in a concealed carry class just too carry my weapon. and how many yeas did that take to become in effect, why is it when something happens in there house does order and laws go into effect so fast.

  5. In Maryland You have to be fingerprinted go through a background check, take a class, be interviewed by a MSP and qualify on the firing range. Also during your interview with the State Trooper you have to give him a good reason why you need to carry a weapon. Not just for self defense that is not a good enough reason. I also had to get a letter from the law enforcement agency where I worked saying that I retired in good standing and a letter from my Doctor stating what medications I take and what their possible side effects were. All of this to get a concealed carry permit. Maryland in one of the seven hardest states in the country to get a permit to carry.

  15. Give the People of your State the right first. Then, as Citizens of the State, Congressmen would automatically have that Second Amendment right, which is God- Given and Inalienable. What part of this don't you understand?

  18. Don't ask anyone for their "permission".
    You don't need it.

    TWO SETS OF LAWS.
And your hero, Mike Lewis, was ready to let the guy go.

Too bad he isn't so lenient when dealing with "we, the people".
Why does anyone have any respect for the law when anyone who is awake can see that it only applies to the serfs.
Oh yeah, I DID read "he will be charged". Charges? Okay.

Punishment? Here's your gun back, pay a $200 fine, PBJ. Make sure your pension contributions are still being deducted.
Now get back to your cushy job and resume your critical work in managing everyone else's life (with punishments, too).
    You or I?
Arrested in public, handcuffed, weapon taken (forever), strip searched, sell the car to pay the attorney, lose job over felony arrest, go to trial, plead down to a lesser charge and agree to 5 years in prison, 3 suspended.
Your wife leaves you, you lose the house, and you can't get a job now.
Two sets of laws just ain't a phrase, you lemmings.
    It's reality in the USA.
    Keep cheering.

  19. lmclain, Excellent comment, thank you. Lewis screwed the pooch this go around, yet NONE of the local press said anything about it. We knew this was a Republican Senator, yet we immediately exposed this because you are right, there seems to be two sets of rules here on the Eastern Shore and we are all about the TRUTH here on SBYNews.
