A Viewer Writes: Store Closings

Joe Last night I was out working and thought I would like a cup of coffee so I went to WAWA on the south side and they were closed. This was about 2am. So I drove over to Royal Farms located at Snow hill Road and College Ave. and got a cup. I told the people at the counter that WAWA was closed and they informed me that they were also closing in a few minutes as the police had asked them to as there was a lot of parties in town last night!? Is this how they protect our town by asking local business to shut down!? Wonder what your viewers thank about this.

  1. If it helps cut down on crime and assist the police in handling calls without stretching their resources thin. At 2 am most law abiding, non partying people are home.

  2. the best thing to do in this town, cops are outnumbered 100 to 1

  3. This is the action of the local management, who have had so many problems with those leaving bars that they decided a couple of weeks ago to close for the early morning hours, from about 1to 3 on Fridays and Saturdays. I've been in there during those hours for a cup of decaf on the way home. Some of the unruly drunks, both male and female, are a sight. One one occasion, the manager shut down when I was there after one drunk woman refused to pay for her food and then trashed the displays and threw stuff at the lone sandwich maker. The place is more minimally staffed on the graveyard shift, so it's a matter of employee safety, too.

  4. Yes that's exactly how they protect the citizens/town. By closing the businesses temporarily (those that agree to shut down) they remain available to respond and protect the neighborhoods rather than having extremely large disorderly crowds loitering at a business, stealing, fighting etc. They learned from the past that the issues that occurred at certain businesses after hours (near bar closing etc) required such a significant police presence that it was easier for said businesses to voluntarily close until the crowds went home for the night rather than having 40 drunk people waiting in a line for a sandwich, drink etc and having incidents happen involving numerous intoxicated subjects all in one place who are mad because they had to leave the bar etc etc...

  5. That's just the tip of the iceberg. That's a hot time for some drug dealing in the parking lot.

  6. Its their way of protecting those that work late at night. Fights kick off police respond, same to store gets robbed little to no response. They can't be every where due to night thug life.

  9. They've done this at Lewes and Rehoboth Wawa's many times during the summer the past couple of years. I've seen them do it in Lancaster PA, Wayne PA, and Fairfax Va.

  10. Send in a ndercover officers and clean up the problem. Local business closings and employees losing hours is not a sensible answer. Only in Salisbury, where the mayor and council are more interested in digging up downtown than making the community safe!

  12. Why don't the various law enforcement agencies arrest all the drunks? DUI stops near bars? It is crazy to let these people drive.

    1. Because its not illegal 2 be drunk. And cops have to pretend they dont case bars to run up their DUI count. After all, if they went after real criminals they might get hurt.

  13. Why not hire body guards to take care of the morons that get out of hand.

  14. Instead of enforcing law and order they just let these people run rampant over businesses. The city can't keep a adequate force on duty at night to enforce laws so they ask business to close and lose money.

  15. Lil Kim was doing a UMES homecoming show at the Fountains last night too. Probably didn't need those fans trashing stores.

  17. Some people who depend on a paycheck from those businesses who closed will be a little short this week.

  19. Nothing good can happen when you're out and about at 2am. Go home and get some food and coffee if you're drunk and sleep it off. It would save businesses money to close between 12am & 6am because they're not going to make enough money from a few cups of coffee to pay for their employees and lights and heat.

  20. Joe, I have lived here in salisbury all my life. With all the comments on pres trump, fumes, protests, etc... I have something to comment about, and am wondering what your viewers think about this issue.I just got my first computer, and my grandkids suppose to tech me how to send mail, so can only write on comments til they set me up. Anyway I have to say that I believe we have lost a very important landmark here in salisbury. Giant food grocery store. I have shopped Giant for 48 yrs. Since Acme came I have given them many chances. Their prices are high, I mostly go for the workers I've come to care about. But Friday as I shopped I heard something that really upset me. Acme is not treating their workers good at all. One of my usual gals that wait on me was telling me why I noticed workers not as pleasant as always. The part-time workers are cut back to only 20 hrs a week! They can't have a purse or any personal items with them, and worst, cashiers can't have a bottle of water at their work area unless they bring in a note from their doctor. What the check! The older workers that made that store great for this community, are worried about acme trying to get rid of these older employees. I was told the manager is rude to them, has let them know the old giant workers make to much money per hour. The management even does inspections in work areas to be sure there is no purses, coats, wallets or Water at any work area. I'm sorry but I will not spend one more penny in that store. I will miss my workers I have come to care about, but I won't go there again. In case my workers miss seeing me, I hope they know mrs.Ella is now going to Wal-Mart. Thought I'd never do that, but they have left me no choice. Good bye Acme.

There are lots of us who work overnight in Salisbury. You would be surprised how much money these stores generate overnight and what about the people who work at these stores, they need their jobs.

  22. Wawa and Royal Farms closing early instead of standard 24-hour service? Like a scene out of a Stephen King novel.
