Md. regulators OK Pepco rate increase, 1st since merger

WASHINGTON — Maryland regulators have rejected a Pepco rate change that would have increased residential customer rates as much as 10 percent agreeing to a smaller increase instead.

The Maryland Public Service Commission approved the partial rate increase for Pepco on Tuesday. The distribution rate change will increase the average residential bill about $7 a month, an increase of almost 5 percent.

The commission also denied the power company’s request to extend a surcharge for its grid resiliency program, which will be eliminated from customers’ bills. The charge was added to help the utility improve reliability and safety following the 2012 Derecho that left much of the D.C. regions without power – some areas for days.

Pepco had sought to increase bills for residential customers about $15.80 a month, which would have generated about $127 million in additional revenue for the power company.

  1. Derecho was a new term invented after the horrific damage was done by the military's weather modification program. Massive winds with no precipitation.

Some of us were paying attention, and were not fooled by the creation of a term for something which had NEVER HAPPENED BEFORE in history.

  6. They are lying, first it will not be 7 bucks it will be more than that, secondly I don't think this is the second time they raised rates... I remember them going and asking for a raise a year or so ago...

I am sure glad all of this new neat technology which makes things cheaper and faster and more accurate and more efficient, That everything is rising in cost, when it should be goign down...

That is how you know everything is rigged by the elites, and this also shows how stupid you people are for believing anything they tell you...

  8. Ask for ten percent, knowing that it ain't gonna happen.

SETTLE for 5%, which is what you really wanted all along.
Now the "regulators" look REAL tough, smacking down the bad electric company across the face. Standing up for their constituents and all that.
Keep cheering, but THIS was NOT a "victory" for the people.

  9. These increases are about the upgrades need for the solar on the shore which costs more than 3.5 times more. Because renewable energy credits have tanked, the utilities can no longer hide its cost. Viola!See testimony of Ethridge PSC Case #9393. We are paying for the higher cost of solar and then the power gets a free ride at our cost to NY & NJ.

  10. So they are raising the rates to pay for smart meters. How lucky am I that I get to pay this increase and also pay the monthly charge because I don't have a smart meter nor do I want one. Sounds like a double fee I'm paying.

  11. They got an increase last year as well. My question is what are they doing with all the money?? For customers who didn't request nor want the smart meter, why are they having to pay a surcharge? Why do all the customers have to pay all these add on surcharges, plus the cost of monthly service to the residence then on top of that now another increase? They should have been maintaining their networks all along, so I am really puzzled as to why all these increases? It seems more like double, and triple dipping to me.

Same goes with the phone, and cable bills.
