GM Laying Off Over 2,000 at 2 Car Plants as Sales Slow
DETROIT (AP) — Falling demand for cars is forcing General Motors to lay off more than 2,000 workers indefinitely at two assembly plants in Ohio and Michigan starting in January.
The company says it will suspend the third shifts at factories in Lordstown, Ohio, near Cleveland, and in Lansing, Michigan, because customers are shifting from cars to SUVs and trucks.
About 1,250 workers will be furloughed at the Lordstown plant, which makes the Chevrolet Cruze compact car. Another 840 will be idled at the Lansing Grand River factory, which makes the Chevrolet Camaro muscle car and the Cadillac ATS and CTS luxury cars.
The demand is there, but no one can afford the high prices of new cars. The last time I afford a new car was in 2003. I bought a new Pontiac Vibe GT. I still have this car and passed on down to my son. Been buying used since then, and when I do it's Japanese because of quality.
Very few american cars in my neighborhood. Mostly high end Japanese or german imports. There are a few old geysers that drive older Cadillacs. Majority of young buyers want stylish imports. American car companies failed to recognize what millennials want when they buy cars. Many are not buying but rent when they need a vehicle or use uber to get around.
I notice that the people who have the nicest cars don't work at all. They are either very rich (given to them) or very "poor" and again, it is given to them.
Hey 3:59, the problem isn't trump it's the unions fighting for people to get $40.00 hr to put screws in a dashboard maybe 4 times a day! Then it's the CEO's getting millions to do nothing. Educate yourself before you spew crap from a keyboard!
It's actually called making cars nobody wants... funny after working for domestics for years then working for Mercedes Benz... we haven't had a 2016 car on our lot for several months... Chevy can't give them away...it's called making a number of cars you can sell instead of just loading the market hoping they can sell....GM never learns.....
Cars are way too expensive..and if your credit is challenged your interest rate is going to be terrible...if they would come down on prices and work with people who can't afford high payments they might sell cars again!!
The car market situation is terrible. I set out to by a brand new 2017 but the prices are beyond my ability to repay so, I ended up buying an old 2010 Grand Sport Corvette. Just terrible
Make the Rich pay ALL the taxes , and the rest of us pay NONE ....that's a Fair system... esp since the GOV Prints money, so WHY do they need US to pay any Taxes ??? Not based on Gold anymore but on TRUST they say on TV they run the presses 24/7, let us keep our $$$ Triple social security . it is way behind Make ALL pet shelters NO-KILL all 50 states, stop the murder....... Deport ALL bad criminals to Siberia..... quit paying for them to stay here...get Rid of them.....
