Franchot Says Schools Without A/C is a Civil Rights Issue

BALTIMORE (WJZ)– State Comptroller Peter Franchot and the NAACP sent a letter to the Department of Justice arguing that many of the schools without air conditioning in low income communities is a civil rights issue.

50,000 area kids are going to class in schools without air conditioning. Skyrocketing temperatures inside area classrooms without air conditioning. Now the state comptroller is asking the feds to step in.

“It’s a health issue, it’s a safety issue,” said Franchot.

He and the NAACP called the lack of air conditioning a “blatant neglect of students civil rights.”

  1. It's a health issue and a safety issue absolutely. Not only that, but how do you expect children to value education when going to school seems like a punishment?

  2. And we (the elders) walked 10 miles to school uphill both ways in winter without dying or filing lawsuits against our parents or the schools...

  3. I had no a/c throughout my school career. I survived and got an education...probably better than they are getting now.

  4. so since my civil rights were "violated" from 1957-1968, I demand reparations in the millions of dollars. OK I'll cut you some slack - just send me $100,000 and I'll call it even. If it violates rights NOW, then it violated rights THEN. or is this a typical double standard, politically motivated play to gain sympathy (VOTES) from the black community?

  9. I'm with 10:05 AM! 1959 through 1972, I was never in a classroom that was air conditioned. Where's my jet pack and accompanying check? Half a mil should do the trick!

  10. I know this will probably sound deviant but I'm looking forward to the day when all this way of thinking comes to a head and this country actually has to answer for its entitlement mentality, those of us that actually can survive on what is naturally available can sit back and laugh at the civil unrest and people reaping what they've sown

  13. I do feel bad for the children because it does get hot in those rooms. Yes we went to school without AC but we had windows that opened and the teacher could keep their doors open as well. They can't do that now. However Baltimore County has wasted so much money on crap that should have been spent on AC for these schools. They just want someone else to pay for it. I'm sure their homes are not much cooler but at least they can open the windows!

  14. I guess that money they sent to Freddie Grays parents would have come in handy to pay for AC for the schools huh?

  16. I am entitled just like 10:05 to reparations for the hardships I endured. With a more conducive learning environment I'm sure I would have invented Windows before Bill Gates; I'll graciously settle for half its current value!
