‘There is Nothing Moral About Trapping People In Poverty’

(CNSNews.com) – At a rally in Davenport, Iowa on Sunday GOP presidential candidate Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) said that too many Americans are dependent on government assistance, and it results in “trapping people in poverty.”

“We have a safety net in this country to take care of people who have fallen on hard times – to take care of people who are truly disabled,” Rubio said. “But today it’s become a way of life for far too many people.”

“And that has to change,” said the senator. “It isn’t right for the people that work hard and it isn’t right for the people we’re trapping in poverty.”

“There is nothing moral about trapping people in poverty,” Rubio said.

Rubio further said Americans have an obligation to help “the less fortunate,” and that they do so generously.

“We have to live out our moral creed and our obligations to one another,” Rubio said. “As a people we always have done this.”

“We are the most charitable people on this planet,” he said. “Because our Judeo Christian values teach us that we have a moral obligation to care for the less fortunate.”

Rubio said the government also has a role in helping people in need but should not make people dependent on it.
