What Seceding From The U.S. Will Cost You

Your state wants to secede from the union. What will this mean for your taxes?
I have good news and bad news. The good news is really good. But the bad news is really, really bad.
We’ll get to them in a moment.
Talk of secession is in the air. The White House this week confirmed that residents in all fifty states had submitted petitions asking to leave the union. Will the last one left please turn out the lights?

MARYLAND WORKING TO ASSIST EASTERN SHORE RESIDENTS WHILE AWAITING WORD ON DISASTER DECLARATION

REISTERSTOWN, MD (November 19, 2012) – Maryland state agencies have been providing assistance to residents of the lower Eastern Shore affected by Hurricane Sandy, while still awaiting a decision about the requested Presidential Disaster Declaration. Maryland requested a Presidential Declaration for Public Assistance for the entire state and Individual Assistance for Dorchester, Somerset and Worcester counties on November 8.

“Because we asked for Individual Assistance in three counties, it is taking our federal partners additional time to process our request,” said Ken Mallette, Executive Director of the Maryland Emergency Management Agency. “Delaware received their disaster declaration sooner, in all likelihood because they only asked for Public Assistance. We believe it is imperative that we also try to get Individual Assistance because of the damage to private property and impact to individuals in those three counties.”

A Public Assistance declaration provides assistance to state and local government and certain nonprofit agencies for damage to facilities, the cost of protective measures (such as additional police and fire services) and debris removal, usually by reimbursing 75 percent of eligible costs. Individual Assistance, on the other hand, is for families or businesses which have uninsured damages to property as a result of a federally declared disaster. Most of that assistance is in the form of loans, and not grants.

Meanwhile, several state agencies have been working with local partners and volunteer groups to provide assistance to individuals on the lower Eastern Shore, especially in the Crisfield area, since Hurricane Sandy has passed.

The Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development is working with approximately 160 families to find appropriate housing assistance programs, while the Maryland Department of Human Resources is currently providing hotel housing for eight families. The Crisfield Public Housing Authority has about 70 families in hotels and has already begun repairs to 42 of the 140 units in the Somer’s Cove development that were damages by the tidal surge.

For about two weeks after Sandy, the Maryland Department of Human Resources coordinated Essential Services Centers in Crisfield and Westover, bringing representatives from several state agencies and volunteer groups together under one roof so affected residents could learn about assistance programs, damage clean-up, dealing with mold issues and disaster mental health programs. More than 450 received information from the centers. Another 170 callers received similar information from a toll-free number set up by the Maryland Department of Human Resources to provide information to those affected.

State and local agencies and volunteers coordinated and staffed shelters in the three counties for 690 people and 98 pets who evacuated from flood-prone areas and kept them open for several days, while a faith-based organization in Crisfield has served more than 2,500 hot meals and other volunteers distributed food, water, clean-up kits and other donations. The Maryland Insurance Administration has helped 25 residents deal with insurance-related issues.

During the height of the evacuation, members of the Maryland National Guard, Maryland State Police and Maryland Department of Natural Resources Police helped local first responders to evacuate several hundred residents of Crisfield because of rising tides.

“We understand residents of the lower Eastern Shore may be frustrated at the lack of a Presidential Disaster Declaration,” Mallette said. “It is important to remember that a declaration is based on conditions throughout the county, not just those experienced in one household or a small community. We are working closely with our Congressional delegation to receive an answer as soon as possible. But state agencies have continued to work with local agencies and nonprofits to assist residents of the area.”

Somerset County residents still needing assistance should call (toll-free) 888-756-7836.

As I Had Expected, Only 15 People Called In To Congressman Harris & FEMA Conference Call About Crisfield

While you have to give the man credit for trying to better the situation in Crisfield, very few of the 15 people on the line were actually Crisfield residents.

As I had mentioned the other day, I fully expected this, wondering how many would even know the call was going to even take place.

The above Post:

MARYLAND WORKING TO ASSIST EASTERN SHORE RESIDENTS WHILE AWAITING WORD ON DISASTER DECLARATION

The information provided in that Post was again delivered at one of our elected officials requests. I received a call moments ago red flagging the e-mail to let me know how things are progressing and to expect an update.

As you can see, President Obama and FEMA are dragging their feet.

IRAN MOVING SLEEPER CELLS INTO AMERICA?

A U.S. congresswoman is warning that while the world’s eyes are on Iran’s growing threat against Israel, the Islamic nation’s terrorist surrogates may have already formed sleeper cells here in the United States.

Rep. Sue Myrick, R-N.C., asserted in a radio interview today she believes it’s possible that Hezbollah, the radical terrorist organization tied to Iran, may be working with Mexican cartels to funnel not only drugs, but also terrorist sleeper agents into the U.S.

“Former [Defense Intelligence Agency] people and others have told me what is going on, there have been a couple of arrests in this country relative to people who have had ties to Hezbollah or Iran, and my concern has been with the drug cartels and the gangs that are operating in Mexico,” Myrick said. “There is, what I have been told, a very strong presence there of coordination between the two.”

House Republicans Formally Oppose Potential Cabinet Nomination for Rice

Nearly 100 House members have told President Obama they would oppose his nomination of Ambassador Susan Rice as the next secretary of State, saying her “misleading statements” following the fatal attacks on  U.S. outposts in Libya have caused “irreparable damage to her credibility.”
The 97 House Republicans informed the president in one-page letter Monday.
Rice, the U.S. ambassador to the United Nations, said in TV interviews five days after the fatal Sept. 11 attacks in Benghazi, Libya, that the strikes were “spontaneous” and sparked by outrage over an anti-Islamic video.

Wal-Mart Fights Back As Black Friday Strike Nears

Wal-Mart Stores Inc is taking its first legal step to stop months of protests and rallies outside Walmart stores, targeting the union that it says is behind such actions.

Wal-Mart late on Thursday filed an unfair labor practice charge against the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, or UFCW, asking the National Labor Relations Board to halt what the retailer says are unlawful attempts to disrupt its business.

The move comes just a week before what is expected to be the largest organized action against the world's largest retailer, as a small group of Walmart workers prepare to strike on Black Friday, typically the busiest shopping day of the year.

Black Friday: 10 Items NOT To Buy

(MoneyWatch) If you are one of the brave souls who will venture out on Black Friday (and the newer version, "Grey Thursday), one of the best ways to save money is to not fall prey to retailers' seemingly "great deals." According to dealnews.com, not everything will be a good purchase on Black Friday. The site has compiled 10 items that are not worth buying this Black Friday.
1. Toys. Were you tempted by the "Toys-R-Us 2012 Holiday Hot Toy List"? Well, you may want to wait to buy that coveted Furby. Most retail experts say that without a "must-have" toy this season, many will see deep discounts within two weeks of Christmas.
2. Apple iPad mini. While there may be an iPad mini promotion out there, chances are the price will remain close to the current $329. Early adopters should be aware that the iPad mini is fairly close to the iPad 2, and that's the version that is likely to see a steep Black Friday discount.

FBI to Honor CAIR-Linked Group

Next April in Washington, FBI director Robert Mueller will give the agency’s community service award to Farrukh Saeed, chairman of SALAM, the Sacramento Area League of Associated Muslims. “SALAM’s openness and commitment to the community as a whole, regardless of faith, makes them a shining example of community leadership,” said FBI special agent Herb Brown at the local ceremony.
“I think if anyone at SALAM knew anything about (potential) terrorism,” Brown added, “they would come to us at the FBI.” That certainty is not shared by locals familiar with SALAM, which openly hosts events with the Council on American-Islamic Relations. Local CAIR boss Rashid Ahmad recently downplayed the Benghazi attacks and wants to deprive American filmmakers of their freedom of speech.
The CAIR connection did not emerge in news reports about the FBI award, though Steve Magagnini of the Sacramento Bee brought in the case of Hamid Hayat, noting that it had made the SALAM people uncomfortable. “There was no evidence other than his own words that Hayat actually underwent terrorist training,” Magagnini added, implying that Hayat, now serving a 24-year sentence, could be innocent.

Secret Service Special Agent Discusses Counterfeiting Prevention

With the holiday sales rush, merchants may not always have time to check every currency bill given to them by a customer. Counterfeiters are getting more advanced, and while there are some who don't print bad money well, merchants, bank personnel and others need to check out anything that looks or feels suspicious.

Special Agent Rich Hudson of the U.S. Secret Service spoke this past week with members of the Brunswick Economic Development Committee and Greater Brunswick Area Chamber of Commerce about different ways criminals print money and what to look for.

Hudson talked about how he had gone undercover offering to buy counterfeit money from a person in Elkton who was using a $30 ink jet printer.

Maryland Offering Text Traffic Alerts For Holiday Travel

Maryland highway officials say they are offering holiday motorists new ways to keep ahead of traffic jams this year.

The State Highway Administration says motorists can now receive text and email alerts from its 511 travel information system. Motorists can also call 511 or visit the md511.org website, where they can also register for the text and email alerts. State highway officials say that can help drivers learn about major incidents, delays and estimated travel times before they get behind the wheel.

And the agency says it is also suspending all non-emergency roadwork on SHA roadways from Wednesday morning to Monday morning next week to help ease holiday travel congestion.

Restraint?!

Calls for “restraint” have begun. Yes, restraint. After months of hundreds of missiles raining down on Israeli heads – murdering, injuring and destroying – Israel finally decided to do something serious. They killed a top Hamas terrorist, best known for orchestrating the kidnapping of Gilad Shalit. Oh, it was then that the world decided to finally take notice of Israel’s “aggression”.

Rather than cheering on the Israelis and complementing them on a job well done – we hear calls for Israeli restraint, even from the United States.

Obama said Israel had the right to defend itself against Hamas’ missile attacks from Gaza. But he urged Israel not to launch a ground assault in Gaza, saying it would put Israeli soldiers, as well as Palestinian citizens, at greater risk and hamper an already vexing peace process.

“If we see a further escalation of the situation in Gaza, the likelihood of us getting back on any kind of peace track that leads to a two-state solution is going to be pushed off way into the future,” Obama said.

I wonder what message this sends to the democratically elected Hamas government in Gaza – the world won’t say a word about the hundreds of rockets targeting school buses and innocents trying to live their lives – but when the world is made a safer place by the assassination of a chief murderer – “restraint” is called for. The message is clear: Jewish blood is cheap.

Estate Tax Bomb Coming: Rise Of The ‘Death Tax’

One of the hardest things to do in life is burying a loved one. However, if you are the heir of an individual who owns property that is valued higher than $1 million, you may soon end up paying 55%, meaning that the US government would own more of that property than you would. That is, if Congress decides to trip over the ‘fiscal cliff’, allowing for the Bush tax cuts to expire.  Business Week reports:
If Congress does nothing, as would be the case if the Democratic bill and no others became law, the exemption would drop to $1 million and the rate would rise to 55 percent. Under that regime, the tax would affect about 2 percent of estates, or 55,200, according to the JCT.
However, Democrats are willing to ‘graciously’ compromise, saying that a $3.5 million property would only be taxed at a 45% rate. Awesome.

IT SEEMS THE DEAD BOY USED AS SYMBOL OF ISRAELI ‘AGGRESSION’ WAS KILLED BY…HAMAS

Egypt’s Prime Minister Hisham Kandil cried on Friday and kissed the dead child’s forehead, calling him a “martyr.” CNN called him “another victim of an [Israeli] airstrike.” Newspapers showed his photo as an example of the Palestinian civilians killed by Israel’s ongoing military campaign against militants in Gaza.
The only problem with that narrative is that 4-year-old Mahmoud Sadallah was killed by a Hamas rocket that fell short in Gaza instead of its intended target: Israel. According to an Israeli military statement Sunday, “Ninety-nine rockets fired from Gaza have crashed back into Gaza in the last four days. Hamas fires from civilian areas…and hits its own people.”
Pro-Israel blogger Elder of Ziyon reviewed media reports on the incident and wrote: “The IDF did not launch any airstrikes in Gaza while Egyptian PM Kandil was in Gaza.” Israel had agreed to a temporary ceasefire while Kandil was visiting Gaza on Friday, as a gesture to Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi. Even so, terror groups continued firing on Israel during the diplomatic visit.

RESULTS OF ECONOMIC ENTROPY

Trillions of dollars of debts will be restructured and millions of financially prudent savers will lose large percentages of their real purchasing power at exactly the wrong time in their lives. Again, the world will not end, but the social fabric of the profligate nations will be stretched and in some cases torn. Sadly, looking back through economic history, all too often war is the manifestation of simple economic entropy played to its logical conclusion. We believe that war is an inevitable consequence of the current global economic situation.
Larry Edelson wrote an email to subscribers entitled “What the “Cycles of War” are saying for 2013″, which states:
Since the 1980s, I’ve been studying the so-called “cycles of war” — the natural rhythms that predispose societies to descend into chaos, into hatred, into civil and even international war.
I’m certainly not the first person to examine these very distinctive patterns in history. There have been many before me, notably, Raymond Wheeler, who published the most authoritative chronicle of war ever, covering a period of 2,600 years of data.
However, there are very few people who are willing to even discuss the issue right now. And based on what I’m seeing, the implications could be absolutely huge in 2013.

Congress Calls Out EPA On Secret Email Addresses

In a move to limit the ability for government organizations to work behind closed doors, Congress has demanded that the EPA keep its communications open to the public.

However, the EPA has decided to circumvent Congressional demands, creating ‘secret email accounts’, which has allowed them to communicate without public oversight.

This action, says the Washington Times, could be highly illegal:

A House committee has launched an investigation into whether EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson used an email alias to try to hide correspondence from open-government requests and her agency’s own internal watchdog — something that Republican lawmakers said could run afoul of the law.

Bonus Christmas Holiday ... Is It A Go?

Things are tough all over. Good news is hard to come by. Europe has slipped back into recession. But it is time to get real, up close and personal. So...

Forget about the tragic events in Syria for a moment.
Stop worrying about sequestration. It will either happen or not, and there is nothing you can do about it anyhow.
How much does it really matter that a general in the midst of a war finds time to send 20,000 to 30,000 documents and emails to a friend?
Does who did what to whom, when and where (and on or off duty) resound with you?

Get the point?

Instead, let's talk about something real. Something tangible that we all have a stake in. Something we can all get our teeth into. That of course is this: Are federal workers going to get a four-day Christmas holiday? Will the White House give feds time off on the Monday before Christmas, which this year falls on Tuesday?

Eastern Shore Chili Like You've Never Seen Before

This weekend I went by a friends home in Pittsville where they prepared and cooked 40+ gallons of chili. This was their 8th year doing so. 50 pounds of onions. 80 pounds of ground beef. $500.00 in all went into the materials to deliver some of the best chili I've ever eaten.

I arrived at 7:00 AM to help in the cooking process. The wooden thing you see in the pot is actually an new oar to stir the pot. Once it was finished friends and neighbors started arriving and let me tell you, the entire pot was gone in three hours.

You just gotta love the Eastern Shore!

Managers Scramble To Understand Health Law Changes

Huddling around an Annapolis conference room table last week, a group of employment managers tried to school themselves on health benefits changes that are coming soon.

The federal health care law - the Affordable Care Act - will require employers with at least 50 workers to provide affordable health care to all full-time employees or pay a penalty.

But even though these managers work on employee benefits for a living, they looked baffled.

“What constitutes a 'full-time employee'?” one manager asked. For that matter, what counts as “affordable health care?” asked another.

Americans Consume Nearly As Many Calories From Alcohol As They Do From Soda

A new government study claims that U.S. consumers intake nearly as many empty calories from alcohol as they do from soda.

"We've been focusing on sugar-sweetened beverages. This is something new," Cynthia Ogden, one of the study's authors and an epidemiologist with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, told the Associated Press.

The study results, which were published on Thursday, claim that Americans get about 6 percent of all their calories from soda and other sweetened drinks, with about 5 percent coming from alcoholic beverages.

Maryland’s Endemic Corruption: An Object Lesson For The Nation

Maryland is one of the most corrupt states in our nation. Nowhere is this fact more evident than with the state’s treatment of illegal aliens. Maryland politicians have literally become lawless in their efforts to cultivate illegals, and this lawlessness flows downhill from the very top. I will focus on a few of the more egregious examples.

In 2011, we published a report on CASA de Maryland, a Silver Spring-based illegal immigrant advocacy group that parrots ACORN in both its methods and associates—which include the Communist Party USA, FMLN, (a former Salvadoran communist guerilla group, now a political party), ACORN and others. Yet it is one of the most influential organizations in the state.

CASA receives significant state government funding, while Director Gustavo Torres and his wife, Sonia Mora both hold influential positions within that same government. Torres is a member of the Governor’s Council for New Americans and served on Governor Martin O’Malley’s transition team. Mora sits on the Governor’sHispanic Affairs Commission and manages Montgomery County’s Latino Health Initiative. This is unseemly if not illegal. Torres’ primary source of income is CASA de Maryland, and CASA owes its inordinate influence to its many supporters in state government.

Twinkies Likely To Survive Sale of Hostess

Twinkie lovers, relax.

The tasty cream-filled golden spongecakes are likely to survive, even though their maker will be sold in bankruptcy court.

Hostess Brands Inc., baker of Wonder Bread as well as Twinkies, Ding Dongs and Ho Ho's, will be in a New York bankruptcy courtroom Monday to start the process of selling itself.

The company, weighed down by debt, management turmoil, rising labor costs and the changing tastes of America, decided on Friday that it no longer could make it through a conventional Chapter 11 bankruptcy restructuring. Instead, it's asking the court for permission to sell assets and go out of business.

TROOPERS REMIND TRAVELERS TO  “DRIVE AS IF THEIR LIVES DEPEND ON IT!”

(PIKESVILLE, MD) – The Thanksgiving holiday period is the busiest travel time of the year and the Maryland State Police want to remind those traveling to drive safely because their lives and the lives of others may depend on it.

Troopers are joining forces with local law enforcement and the Maryland Highway Safety office to remind motorists that driving while impaired or distracted is not a good way to start the holiday season.  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 32,885 people were killed in motor vehicle crashes during 2010 and 10,228 of those fatalities involved alcohol-impaired drivers.

Maryland State Police Superintendent Colonel Marcus L. Brown has ordered traffic safety initiatives to be conducted throughout the state.  Those initiatives include DUI saturation patrols, as well as focused efforts on speed enforcement and aggressive and distracted driving.  “With the increased traffic on the roads during this traveling season, arriving safely should be drivers’ number one priority,” Colonel Brown said.  “There will be extra patrols and cooperative enforcement initiatives with local law enforcement agencies targeting drunk, aggressive, and distracted drivers, as well as those exceeding the speed limit, refusing to wear their seatbelts, or not having a child properly placed in a safety seat.”

Thanksgiving weekend is the traditional start of the holiday shopping season and troopers are encouraging motorists to look out for pedestrians, especially around shopping areas.  There were 85 pedestrian fatalities from January 1, 2011 through November 14, 2011.  While overall pedestrian fatalities have dropped to 72 for the same time this year, some areas have experienced increases. Many housing developments are in close proximity to shopping malls.  Shoppers may not be giving their full time and attention to their surroundings, drivers need to look out for them.

To stay safe this Thanksgiving season, the Maryland State Police recommend motorists plan ahead, be courteous and be patient when traveling. Drivers should not text or make any handheld cell phone calls.  Always reduce as many distractions as possible while driving.  If you find yourself impaired, call a friend or family member, use public transportation, or call a cab.  If you see a driver you think is impaired or driving their vehicle in an unsafe manner, keep a safe distance and contact law enforcement.

The additional State Police patrols are in support of the Maryland Highway Safety Office and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration initiatives.  High visibility enforcement is planned on Maryland roads, with a special emphasis on interstates and major highways where the majority of travel will be occurring.  Overtime funding for additional patrols will be provided by grants from the Maryland Highway Safety Office.

Make A Deal Now, Obama

“The ground of liberty,” wrote Thomas Jefferson, “is gained by inches.” Wise counsel, yes, for patience amid the tribulations of political life, which is inherently contentious and can never leave everyone happy about everything.
There are moments, though, when the hour has to be seized if we’re to gain those inches, and, for President Obama, this is such a moment.

O’Malley, Ehrlich Camps Unite In Maryland Campaign Against Federal Debt

They squared off against one another in two bitter statewide campaigns, but loyalists of Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) and former governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (R) have found a cause on which they can lock arms: federal debt reduction.

Former aides to the two governors will be among those announced at an event in Baltimore on Monday as steering committee members of the Maryland Campaign to Fix the Debt, according to organizers. The Maryland chapter is part of a national movement to convince politicians in Washington to avoid the so-called “fiscal cliff” and address the nation’s long-term debt.

Michael R. Enright, a former O’Malley chief of staff, and Chip DiPaula Jr., a former Ehrlich chief of staff and budget secretary, are both taking part.

EXCLUSIVE: Armed Robber In Salisbury Almost Killed By 50 Year Old Woman

While doing laundry at the laundry mat in Pecan Square last night an armed robber came in and put a gun to a woman's head demanding money.

The woman turned around and started beating the crap out of the robber. The robber dropped his gun and the 50 year old female victim picked it up and tried to shoot the robber.

Unfortunately the gun wouldn't go off. The robber fled and got away. A Salisbury Police Officer stated in his 20 years of being on the force he had never seen anything like it.

Can Texas Really Secede From The Union? Not Legally

It’s beginning to feel a lot like the 1860s — and not just because Steven Spielberg’s Lincoln opened wide this weekend. There is a secessionist movement afoot, and hundreds of thousands of Americans from all 50 states have signed petitions to secede. Texas is in the lead — no great surprise, perhaps — with ABC reporting last week that the Lone Star State’s petition was the first to get more than 25,000 signatures. It now has more than 100,000.
That 25,000 mark — which at least seven states have hit — is significant. The petitions were shrewdly placed on a White House website called “We the People,” which invites members of the public to appeal directly to the federal government. The website promises that petitions that get more than 25,000 signatures within 30 days — subject to some exceptions — will get a response from the White House.
More

675,000 Secessionists

That's a lot more Americans than fought the original Revolutionary War. Of course, it's easy to sign a digital petition and rather less easy to spend a hungry winter at Valley Forge, but the size and speed of the response does indicate how Americans feel about Obama's "America":

Less than a week after a New Orleans suburbanite petitioned the White House to allow Louisiana to secede from the United States, petitions from seven states have collected enough signatures to trigger a promised review from the Obama administration.

By 6:00 a.m. EST Wednesday, more than 675,000 digital signatures appeared on 69 separate secession petitions covering all 50 states, according to a Daily Caller analysis of requests lodged with the White House’s “We the People” online petition system.Nothing will come of these PR-stunt petitions. But they are an early sign of the secessionist struggles to come over the next two decades until the final dissolution in the 2033 timeframe. Americans don't want to live in Mexico, Asia, or the Middle East, nor do they want to live in a post-America under Mexican, Asian, and Middle Eastern government. Nor should they, as evidenced by the millions of immigrants who are, ironically but predictably, attempting to turn their new country into the same sort of place they left in the first place.

The Death Of Civility — And Free Speech – At Fordham

Leftist doublespeak has long declared that true freedom can only come at the cost of censoring speech which offends or demeans marginalized groups. This paradoxical ethos is now evident in many aspects of American life including the Obama administration’s support of an anti-blasphemy resolution in the UN and in the doctrine of “Islamophobia” which holds that any criticism of Islam is illegitimate and based on irrational fears. These views have unsurprisingly filtered down to the campuses. The most recent example is Fordham University, a Jesuit campus located in New York City, where the University president, left-wing students, and even the campus College Republican chapter have colluded to deny Ann Coulter the right to speak on campus. What’s worse, they have lauded their decision under the guise of free speech.
The controversy began when Fordham’s chapter of the College Republicans invited well known conservative author and commentator, Ann Coulter, to speak on campus. Coulter is a mainstream conservative who is well known for her commentary on Fox News and other stations, for her numerous books and articles, and for speeches at CPAC and other large conventions.

Maybe We Really Can’t All Just Get Along

During the Los Angeles riots of 1992, Rodney King famously asked, “Can’t we all just get along?” The answer should be an easy and unequivocal “yes,” but it seems less and less likely these days.

King was speaking in term of race, but the same could be said of political ideology. Liberals, conservatives and every other point on the political spectrum used to co-exist fairly easily (with the exception of left-wing anarchists who don’t get along with anyone). But these days détente has given way to anger and open hostility.

Some, not all, people have become less civil to those with whom they disagree politically. The modern left, birthed with the start of the eugenics-loving, racist progressive movement at the turn of the 20th century, always has embraced, to varying degrees, the concept of silencing opponents. Through the factions of communism, socialism and fascism (all takes on the same philosophy), leftists have made continuous attempts to silence and punish anyone who doesn’t toe their line.

It Was Actually Romney Who Campaigned Bearing "Gifts"

Beneath the raw offensiveness of Mitt Romney’s statement to his donors that President Obama won by providing “gifts” to African-Americans, Latinos, and young people, is a layer of remarkable hypocrisy: It was actually Romney who was promising big giveaways of taxpayer money during the campaign. But instead of offering his gifts to actual people, Romney pledged to reward his favorite kinds of virtual people — corporations and banks.

I can offer two blatant examples, from the education field, where I do some work. Given Romney’s strong orientation towardcrony capitalism – businesses that get rich off government programs – I’ll bet you can come up with more.

Denny’s Franchisee To Add 5% “Obamacare Surcharge”

The owner of dozens of Denny’s restaurants and the Hurricane Grill chain says he plans on adding a 5% “Obamacare Surcharge” to his menus in 2014 when a number of facets of the Affordable Care Act will kick in.

The restaurant owner says the surcharge is an alternative to raising his prices to cover his projected cost increases at having to provide insurance to more employees.

Justice Department: eBay Violated Antitrust Laws

The U.S.-based internet corporation known as eBay Inc. violated federal antitrust laws when it entered into an agreement not to recruit or hire Intuit Inc.’s employees, the Justice Department said Friday in a civil antitrust lawsuit.
According to the department, the agreement eliminated a significant form of competition to the detriment of affected employees who were likely deprived of access to better job opportunities and salaries.
“eBay’s agreement with Intuit hurt employees by lowering the salaries and benefits they might have received and deprived them of better job opportunities at the other company,” said Acting Assistant Attorney General Joseph Wayland, who heads the department’s Antitrust Division. “The Antitrust Division has consistently taken the position that these kinds of agreements are per se unlawful under the antitrust laws.”
