Minneapolis City Council announce intent to disband police dept.

Can a city survive without a police force? Minneapolis is about to find out: Council votes to dismantle 'toxic' police force over mayor's objections

Minneapolis councilors have voted to abolish the city's police force in an historic move that comes after days of protests over the killing of George Floyd.

The city council voted with a veto-proof three-quarters majority to begin the process of dismantling the 'toxic' police department on Sunday - overruling the objections of 38-year-old mayor Jacob Frey.

While the exact next steps are unclear, plans put forward by community activists in past years call for:

Funds to be taken from the police department and moved into community services aimed at preventing crime

Money would instead go to mental health services, social services, jobs programs, and arts groups

Jobs such as traffic stops, overdose call-outs and mental health calls would be taken away from officers

A smaller, more-specialized force of 'public servants' would deal with solving violent crimes

County sheriffs, whose jurisdiction includes Minneapolis, could be used as a stop-gap police force

  5. 9:28 and you are forced to pay out of taxes, at the force of a gun and jail to pay for these very people to beat you, murder you and abuse your rights??????? That is what you rather have??? it us going to be easier to not fund, or disband a force than to get laws passed to stop them from murdering you...

  7. Wow, talk about shooting yourself in the foot??
What happens to all the innocent people, children, elderly, etc who are subjected to crime in these neighborhoods? Those most vulnerable need the police to keep from being preyed upon. Who is taking care of them when there is no police! I seriously don't think those people looting are gonna help!

  10. Do this across the country, all law enforcement should take a holiday and lets see how that works. I bet after a week the citizens will be begging for cops!

  11. Bye Bye Minneapolis you will not be there much longer let's see the social workers put down shootings, riots, rapes and murders. They will burn you down as soon as you get rid of the police and your voters, and home owners will move elsewhere. STUPID.

  16. Wow. Radical!
I must say that even during my most drug-addled, peace-sign flashing, Vietnam protesting, cop hating, mushroom eating, and acid dropping hippie days, did we ever come up with THAT solution.
There must be some righteous chronic out there nowadays!
Oh to be young and foolish again...

  17. Ironic that Minneapolis just requested $55 million in emergency Federal aid for destinations from the riot. So civilized citizens are supposed to give money because they want to act like rabies infected animals?

  18. Prediction for Minneapolis: When seconds count, cops will be in the next county and won't be responding since it's not their jurisdiction.

    Wire Paladin. San Francisco.

    Good luck!

  21. Disbanding is an idea that ought to be considered. Salisbury Police and Wicomico County Sheriffs office combined would be more efficient , less duplication. The other towns will join in as policing gets more expensive. At least think about it and run the numbers
