Iconic 'Aunt Jemima' and "Uncle Ben' Get Name Changes

Iconic brands Aunt Jemima pancakes and syrup and Uncle Ben’s rice are being retired after someone noticed they were racist.

In truth, black activists have been agitating for Quaker Oats Company and Mars, Inc. to change the names for decades. It’s marvelous what a little rioting will do to scare the bejeebers out of corporations and bend them to your will.

What makes the two brand names particularly revolting is that they harken back to the antebellum South, where Aunt Jemima was in the kitchen and Uncle Ben was the trusted man-servant/slave. It’s probably not too much to ask that blacks should be able to go to the grocery store and not be reminded of their former enforced servitude.

Associated Press:

The owner of the Uncle Ben’s brand of rice says the brand will “evolve” in response to concerns about racial stereotyping. The announcement Wednesday arrived hours after Quaker Oats said it was retiring its Aunt Jemima brand of syrup and pancake mixes. Caroline Sherman, a spokeswoman for Mars, which owns Uncle Ben’s, says the company is listening to the voices of consumers, especially in the black community, and recognizes that now is the right time to evolve the brand, including its visual identity.

This follows the decision earlier in the year by Land O’Lakes to ditch its equally iconic Native American girl on its butter.

  4. Damn ignorant fools!!! Here’s her true story.

The world knew her as "Aunt Jemima," but her given name was Nancy Green and she was a true American success story. She was born a slave in 1834 Montgomery County, KY... and became a wealthy superstar in the advertising world, as its first living trademark.

Green was 56-yrs old when she was selected as spokesperson for a new ready-mixed, self-rising pancake flour and made her debut in 1893 at a fair and exposition in Chicago. She demonstrated the pancake mix and served thousands of pancakes... and became an immediate star. She was a good storyteller, her personality was warm and appealing, and her showmanship was exceptional. Her exhibition booth drew so many people that special security personnel were assigned to keep the crowds moving.

Nancy Green was signed to a lifetime contract, traveled on promotional tours all over the country, and was extremely well paid. Her financial freedom and stature as a national spokesperson enabled her to become a leading advocate against poverty and in favor of equal rights for folks in Chicago.

She maintained her job until her death in 1923, at age 89.

Nancy Green was a remarkable woman... and has just been ERASED by politically correctness!

    1. You just spelled out the reason “they” want her gone. Nancy Green was a working black female that was a success and did it on her own. Makes “them” look bad. Sad, especially for those of us that grew up with her as a household name. Only hurting damn ignorant folks as you said. Not hurting me, just sad.

    2. Jemima is a Hebrew name and is found in the Bible belonging to the oldest of the three beautiful daughters of Job, given to him in the later part of his life, after God made Job prosperous again. ... The name Jemima means "dove".

  8. Last time I checked both products had Best By dates after January 1, 1863, April 9, 1865 and June 19, 1865.

They have been friendly images on respected, successful products.

Hope their accountants will insist on a massive charge against corporate 'goodwill' after their demise.

  9. Tearing down statues and history and nostalgic pop cultural iconic comforts. Mayberry, Walton's Mountain the small town square. You'll have to go to Disney World. We were already living in a propagandized controlled fantasy reality created for hyper consumption and the American Dream. Now we are so fractured and divided taking sides pandering and posturing rallying and boasting and nothing will CHANGE. Our leader does not define us. The State does not define us people have lost sight of their individual freedom and providence and still stand with partisan politics. It's very old world churchy.

  12. I've bought the last of these products then. I dont and never have considered them racist in any way, but by changing the name they have now made it racist forever. Example is...to eliminate the existence and History of Mary Green because she's black, is racist and wrong.

  27. David Bowling is eating this $hit up on FB. He loves this. You would think he was black the way he instigates this $hit.

He also seems to hate police officers and posts a lot of hateful articles about them. You would think someone who wants to be a paid fireman in Salisbury would have more respect for police officers. It's no wonder he got fired for the code compliance department in Salisbury. I think he got kicked out of the volunteers in Salisbury as well. Last I heard he was a volunteer in Parsonsburg. You people in the Parsonsburg Volunteer Fire Company better be careful with him because the WCSO and MSP might not be giving you breaks any longer when they realize his hatred for LEO's and his affiliation with your department.
