Ocean City mayor downplays concerns after photos appear to show crowded boardwalk

Mayor urges governor to loosen restrictions on restaurants to help maintain proper distancing

The coastal resort town was one of a number of destinations to see big crowds and nice weather.

In an interview Monday on WBAL NewsRadio, Ocean City Mayor Rick Meehan acknowledged parts of the boardwalk were crowded but called some pictures misleading.

"I think the pictures were a little misleading, taken at low level with lenses looking into the crowd. If you were actually up there in the crowd, it wasn't really like that, people were separated. I think people did their best to try to stay separated, be courteous," Meehan said.

Ocean City is also allowing nonresident property owners to return.

"We are a popular destination, and all of a sudden, the stay-at-home order has been lifted and people have been dying to get out and about, and a large number of them came to Ocean City," Meehan said. "When you go up the boardwalk, you know it's a narrow thoroughfare and there were a lot of people up there."

As of Monday, Worcester County has 185 confirmed coronavirus cases, and neighboring Wicomico County has 892 cases. Wicomico's rate is fueled by an outbreak in the poultry industry.

  4. Mayor Meehan should have specifically called out the liar wretched Reuter's Patricia Zengerle by name. What a waste of space on this earth the dishonest Zengerle is. I looked at her Twitter. The absolute worst and disgusting part is this liar Zengerlie multiplied. What a piss poor example of a "mother" it is. Pity those kids for having the misfortune of having a lying piece of crap for a mother.

  5. There is NO concern. This "Pandemic" is turning out to be not much different than any other flu season.

  6. 10:29. Exactly. The numbers are relatively the same. The covid death numbers are a sham.

  7. We need to open back up100% and see what happens.. If people still want to stay home and wear mask, that is up to them! People have the right to open their businesses and make a living! Let get back to normal normal and see how quickly this all goes away! The media is making matters much worse than it is! Everyday how many sick, died which isn’t accurate! Governor Hogan, let us be free, people aren’t going to listen anyway!

  8. 1029 - no there is a major concern.

The world shut down for a while - thats a world economic hiccup.

We (USA) shut down for months AND printed TRILLIONS of dollars which did/didn't get to where it needed. 50 different rules (50 states) allowed, didn't allow business/schools/et al to run.

The virus is nothing compared to the economic recovery that will take YEARS.

Since its not part of the current TV "script" it won't be discussed for a while.

Instead we get zoomed in photography, hate from both sides of the political isles and video of the President golfing.

    UGH!

We didn’t print Trillions of US Dollars.
      The Fed printed currency.
The US Government is spending it.

      Me and You are victims.
      Our savings was just depreciated!

Maybe the Gigolo business (like in OC during the late 70's early 80's) will get reinvigorated.

Oh sh*t, I'm in my very gray years now. My demographic is long gone - Damn at least for a moment it was nice to dream!

  15. Wow imaging if every death during the regular flu season was attributed to the flu. We would never be able to leave our houses again. We should all just stay home anyway because there are thousands of people killed in automobile accidents every year.

Boy, isn't that the truth. Looking out for the hotel and bar owners of OC. Oh yeah, and himself. He knows who to dance for. That guy would swear that the sky was blue and sunny even if everyone around him saw grey clouds. Another lying politician for sure.
