With coronavirus spreading, Gov. Hogan signs order for expedited release of hundreds of prisoners

As the coronavirus pandemic continues to spread behind bars in Maryland, Gov. Larry Hogan has signed an executive order to expedite the release of hundreds of men and women imprisoned at state correctional institutions.

Hogan’s order, posted Sunday morning, speeds up the release of inmates who were already eligible to be released within the next four months and the processing of inmates eligible for home detention.

The order also directs the Maryland Parole Commission to accelerate consideration of parole for inmates convicted of non-violent crimes who are older than 60, have a good record while incarcerated, and an approved plan for re-entry to society.

  1. Now this I don't understand. They rent hotel rooms for the homeless to get them off of the streets, yet release prisoners to the streets.

  5. They have to release criminals from jail to make room for the people they arrest for going to church illegally. What have we come to?

  6. I just don't understand the logic. The prisons are already infested with the coronavirus. The majority of the prison population are probably carriers. Right now they are contained but our governor wants to release them out into society?! And who in their right mind thinks that someone who has been locked up for months or years is going to stay home and not travel all over the place?1

  7. He needs to look outside the box. Where do these released individuals go after release. Are they to be tested before release? How are they going to live and where and with who. How do they survive, with no income and no job opportunities. Figure this out before release.

  8. Release a convicted felon back into the streets with NO employment options but turn back to crime

  9. Are these dirt bags being tested for the virus before their release?

  10. Iv only seen minimal evidence of 1 prison {in another state} having a problem and they quickly got that under control. Its clear hogan isnt doing this for the health and safety of the inmates nor for the citizens. The typical reason demorats do these ridiculous decisions is money...soros slip him so bucks for the chaos? savings on inmate cost?
Purposely spreading the virus? Anyway you cut it its a criminal act.

  13. They will end up in our new homeless tent City. Who is responsible when someone gets killed there. Can they sue the city?! This is crazy!! Does the city umbrella policy cover this craziness?!

  14. These are inmates that were eligible for release. Just cutting the paperwork. They must have a residence and the cannot leave the residence until authorities say.

    1. Lol, 523. You think that's how it works? If you guys only knew what was happening.

    2. 523 is right and you are wrong. Too many people think they know everything, yet they know nothing. The parole release system is well maintained and controlled. There are abberations in every demographic including the parole population. No different than any other society demographic.

    5. 1050. Not at all. I beg all of you to look into it. It's called the Justice Reinvestment Act. Hogan's baby. No accountability to criminals. Enjoy.

  15. 5:23 PM - Do not be so naive. Just because they are supposed to have a residence does not make it so and the monitoring will be weak. Just stop it!! This will be an unmitigated disaster. It should be one of the pieces that ruins Hogans political career.

    2. 813, incorrect. No social worker. No ankle bracelet. Fyi, murderers are typically very compliant. It's the heroin addicts and drug dealers you have to worry about. And guess who's getting out?
