Democrats seek to pass $500B plus expanded food stamps in economic relief legislation this week

House and Senate Democrats are demanding Congress approve a $500 billion relief package this week that includes a 15% increase in food stamp benefits.

The request more than doubles the $250 billion in emergency funding sought by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin to extend urgent small business aid that is running dry. Democrats want the additional money for healthcare facilities and to help state and local governments.

“The heartbreaking acceleration of the coronavirus crisis demands bold, urgent and ongoing action from Congress to protect Americans’ lives and livelihoods,” Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said in a joint statement Wednesday. “As Democrats have said since Day One, Congress must provide additional relief for small businesses and families, building on the strong down-payment made in the bipartisan CARES Act.”

  1. I don’t understand how this hardship is affecting those already on food stamps, just an excuse to get more for free. Everyone thinks this is a gravy train, it’s gonna be the demise of us, we can’t ever pay this off folks

  5. I don't agree. There will be additional money already allocated for certain specifics that CAN and should be reallocated when necessary.

  8. They have a Food Stamp allotment that was satisfactory before the virus so what makes it to little now? Is it so they can buy all the expensive food or to sell the Food Stamp for extra cash.Democrats need to eliminate the fraud these people commit now by punishing the not rewarding them.

  11. Really 10:28? You watched 30 people check out? And scrutinized how they paid? Or did you just make a judgement based on the appearance of other shoppers in the store with you as to how they would pay? I hope others were scrutinizing you as well. Doubtful they thought you were as ridiculous a human being as you really are. And aren’t we ever gonna get tired of berating poor people for eating seafood?

  12. Many counties and school districts are making sure that children have a lunch, and in some cases breakfast, dinner and snacks since the schools were ordered closed. Some carry out places have let it be known that a child can come in for a free meal. And I have noticed over the last couple of years that schools are providing breakfast and lunch during the summer, and sometimes over long breaks to disadvantaged students. If we as a society have taken over feeding these kids, why do we need to increase the amount of food stamps their parents receive?
