Maryland Town Threatening 60 Days Jail Time For Revving Engines

The “Cruisin’ Weekend” event that takes place in Ocean City, Maryland every year has turned into one of the biggest gearhead car gatherings on the East Coast. However, the city never intended for it to be such a huge ordeal.

Over the years, laws have been passed to control the situation. Essentially, they seem aimed at drivers who act out or cause a scene, which makes sense. However, the newest proposed law, Senate Bill 878, seems like it might be a bit much.

State Senator Mary Beth Carozza introduced the bill which includes under exhibition driving operating a vehicle in a manner that produces abrupt acceleration or deceleration, skidding, swerving, raucous engine noise, gear grinding or wheels losing contact with the ground. Violations could result in 60 days jail time, a fine of $1,000 or both. Essentially, town authorities could send drivers to jail for quickly accelerating or deceleration among other offenses.

    5. Pedestrians get hit every year. Some by buses, cars, flying umbrellas.

Those who choose temporary safety over freedom DO NOT deserve either.

Most of you have forgotten what this country actually stood for when it was created. Your all pussies. Please protect me police officer from the loud engine reving and send those kids to jail. Can't wait til the cops turn on you and start sending you to jail for driving 20 mph in a 50 mph. Swerving all over the place, pissy pants, cant see, cant hear, dangerous old drivers, you all should go to jail, for driving like that.

  2. A state bill will send the fines to the state. A local bill could keep the $$ at home.

  3. Don’t threaten put the Police Officers out on the street and issue tickets with fines attached....make money for the City!! Kids are going to be kids in the summer.....it happens even when there is no car rallies going on.....see it all the time, just more apparent during these big gatherings!!!

  4. Unless there is a little more specificity in the law it will never stand up to a constitutional challenge.

So when a traffic light changes and you "abruptly" slow down, will that result in a ticket?

At what rate of acceleration or deceleration is the threshold?

  5. How about an area where this is allowed. You will never stop it. You will only anger people the more you restrict them.

If they dont like it they need to offer an alternative or not have the event. Which jailing people for BS will ensure the event goes further south.

    1. 10:06 - so your point is that it is OCs responsibility to provide an area/ setting for illegal behavior? there won’t be an offer or alternative event - obey the law and behave yourself or don’t and suffer the consequences of your actions.

  6. I would like to see OC try to put 2-3 thousand people in jail for 60 days. What would they do build camps or cages to hold them? Let alone the cost of feeding them. Just another stupid idea from politicians. Not to mention if it passes everyone will come down to push the limits.

  9. Some might want to buy stock in auto insurance companies like mary beth. Is car-oozie a communist operative or just her aids? Not worth getting the truth when making new laws or just to lazy? Didnt even bother to get feed-back from the serfs huh, just those that are ready experience at taking from the citizens. Seriously, is she so timid she cant way constitutionality? Clearly she's only listened to the brown shirts that already rape rob and pillage anyone whom dares to attend these crusins now, they already abuse their authority including the bias judge there. Is she too ignorant to actually seek legal advise on such unconstitutional attempts to ignore the already thousands of laws concerning vehicles....or does she just ignore any advise/thought given? With one wave of her queen scepter now ALL vehicles should be exactly alike and ALL people as well should behave and follow her commands....isnt this exactly communism? Remember when communist country used to make all their serfs dress exactly the same, made them all eat the exact same portions of the exact same foods day in day out. Is this what you want for all your serfs mary beth carnazi?

  10. 'Cruisin Weekend" should have all the gearheads to assemble somewhere else. I will not go to this NAZI controlled town for the rest of my living days. They want the money they take in but that is all. Hope no one shows up. Let the old foggies have OC and their drunks. IT IS NO LONGER A FAMILY RESORT.

  15. WOW how low...Hitler dressed in a sweet little ole lady costume. Cant let average paople enjoy themselves. Cant possibly let someone taunt the brownshirts with revving engine noises, will recorded engine sounds put you in prison too? Like a true marxist communist that assist in destroying statues of History and education, the not so honorable carrosa must thwart any and all love and appreciation America has with automobiles. Crack your whip and threaten with your chains carooza because youve just insured your one and only tyrannical rane.
Not that it matters because you pretending to be so ignorant that there are many laws already on the books for these type things. Nearly every engine from the era, more so with performance engines...get loaded with carbon and unburnt fuel when used moderately. On occasion they must be "revved alittle to clear this excess or they could stall, foul plugs ect..

  18. Not likely to pass this year but in typical progressive marxist fashion of the Maryland General Assembly....they'll doctor it up real good for next year, maybe include execution for those that have scary fast looking automobiles.

  20. The entire city is Riddled with crime and violence. Cops run over jaywalkers, the council members and admins are all realtors, mega property owners or are sleeping with those that are, drunks, drugs, prostitution, foreign aid money, lose limbs for a parking space, even the fire company ripping folks off on the inflated cost of fire trucks and gear. Management companies monopolizing like the mafia to keep work away from outside contractors {so they can use their own people and get a bigger percentage, yes mann realty your the worst} I think the whole town needs to be shut down.

  31. I used to live on the island full time, and didn’t mind the cruisers, classics, corvettes, and the bikes, but the H2oi crowd comes for two reasons. They either come to see the show, or be the one seen and it all gets recorded for their 15 minutes of digital fame. There is a collective mentality that they can do whatever they want and that it is their right. Then they shout and rant and rave that their constitutional rights are being trampled on after they are caught.

  39. my predictions for h20i:

traffic to single lane with the other two lanes for police/fire/emt
massive fines and points from bill 878
    crushing impound times and fees
police will move all spectators taking the crowd out of it (more fines)

Gridlock for three days will take all the fun out of things
    the locals will all complain
the hotels will make their money

after last year, and the comments at pressers, the town has now backed itself into a corner and has to so something

i think my predictions are about the only thing they can do without turning the whole place into a police state.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Rickie - this is on YOUR watch son.

    ReplyDelete
  41. there's a easy solution here, if it passes. Move it out of that city and let another area reap the benefits of the sales and revenues that it generates. Let Ocean city do without it. All want to be safe but I think that kind of fine and that amount of jail time is ridicilous and over reach and should be called out as such. Carozza this is not what you were elected for. If the people wanted that they would have voted for Mathias.

    1. 10:16 - what are you talking about? It was never sanctioned in the first place. The original group did this in West O and it grew out of control. The leader of the original H2oi group saw the problems and moved it to NJ - the others who caused the problems took it as a badge of honor and continue to come back to see how much chaos they can create.

      Delete
  42. Feb 16 4:18, Carozza is a state Senator, Not Ocean City so it does not matter if you live in OC. If she was a representative of just OC then ok i could some what see your point, but she is not. This would be on that state level. So we will not stfu as you suggest.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Can you believe the National Guard was considered to address this problem? First they would be told exactly what to do,which would equate to rules of engagement. Then the state and local police would blame them for everything that went wrong.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. 11:56 - I don’t know if that was ever a real consideration or some people just spouting off, but I seriously doubt that would happen. It would give the town a serious black eye and lots of unwanted attention. I would guess that fines and points will be more likely, along with a whole bunch of cars being impounded. I also expect the whole thing to wind up on line, and the town will have at least as bad of a time as last year if not worse. These kids are out to make a point that they think they are in control, and the town didn’t help itself with Rudolph the red nosed reindeer (Meehan) leading the charge with his big mouth. I also expect that there will be some sort of major problem that happens and everything will go nuts. Good weekend to be out of town and watch it on the news
