Students should strive to be in school all day, every day. Consistent full-day attendance supports students in achieving academic success, graduation, and development into productive members of society.
Parents/guardians and students should review the Student Attendance Policy and Student Attendance Procedure to know the rules for excused and unexcused absences for everything from family vacations to college and employer visits to student illness or death in the immediate family.
Students who have more than 5 unexcused absences in a marking term must successfully complete an attendance intervention plan to avoid failing the marking term.
An attendance intervention plan may involve the student staying after school for up to two hours a day, with parents/guardians responsible for alternative transportation home if needed. Student attendance is a family responsibility.
For 2019-2020, the 1st marking term will be a “no fault” period as students and parents/guardians become familiar with the new attendance policy and procedure; attendance will not impact 1st marking term course grades. However, students who have 5 or more unexcused absences in the 1st marking term will have to complete an attendance intervention plan.
Word is this "WAS NOT" approved by the Board of Education! Many good families will be punished for taking vacations while school is in session. This was another policy that punishes the families that do the right things attempting to make the families who dont make their kids go to school go. Guess what they will not change. BUT THE NUMBERS WILL LOOK BETTER BECAUSE THE GOOD FAMILIES WILL STOP GOING ON VACATIONS DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR! Even though those families had their kids make up all their school work and then some. This is a terrible policy. I've been following the Board of Ed now that its elected and there is starting to become HEAVY OVERSIGHT by their part (thanks). Hopefully the board will correct this.
ReplyDeleteWell, the "word" you got was wrong. BOE most definitely approved this.
DeleteA real bunch of crap from your BOE , it's all a scam .
ReplyDeleteIf your white you must abide , if you are of color we will excuse you for anything. Let's see people how it works out.
Get a class action lawsuit together if they do that.
DeleteThe Wicomico County Government needs more oversight on the School Board.
ReplyDeleteWhile I agree that it is the responsibility of both the student and parent to follow “the rules” regarding attendance and proper notification, I don’t think the WCBOE can limit a student and their family to 3 days vacation per school year.
ReplyDeleteJust another coat of icing on the cake which does not improve nothing. WBOE sugar coating another failure.
ReplyDeleteWicomico county will except a parents note to make an absence excused. Most parents do not know that. Wi Hi does.
ReplyDeleteAnd if you are going out of town there is a form you can fill out to be excused.
They excused my child for 4 days for going to a military graduation for a sibling.
Did you mean "accept"?
DeleteA guy interviewed for the Daily Times said "Kids are going to be punished for missing school, but there's no incentive to come".
ReplyDeleteI didn't know you needed an incentive to come to school.
Home school and forget this crap!
ReplyDeleteTake your child on vacation during the summer, thanksgiving break or holiday break that will end the dilemma. The policy reads they are excused for three days only for vacation. If your child is absence due to illness send in a note or Doctors note for them to be excused.
ReplyDeletelol , your local indoctrination center telling you how to raise your family and run your life.
ReplyDeleteFollow, Obey, Consume
Obey, Consume, Conform
Stay in line
As always, those who are upset are the ones that allow their kids to skip school. What if you missed 20 days of work a year? Think you will fail at your job? I think the policy is fair.
ReplyDeleteTake your children on vacation during the summer. Problem solved.
ReplyDeleteThat is what you get when the current administration sits on their hands and eats what they're fed.
ReplyDeleteMy family always made vacation plans for the time we were off in the summer. Why would responsible parents want to take the kids out of school during the school year? Is this modern parenting? Anon 5:14. can you name the other sugar coated failures? We would all like to know.

"will *accept..."
The elected school board members answer to Dr. Hanlin, the Superintendent.
ReplyDeleteYou are 100% wrong. Dr. Hanlin is the only employee that answers to the BOE.
DeleteHas Wicomico County every audited the School Board?
ReplyDeleteNo Dr Hanlin answers to the Board.
ReplyDeleteIt’s easy send your children to school. A day missed is a day of learning missed. A crack down on attendance was needed. Stop whining and do your job as a parent. It’s that simple.
ReplyDeleteSo giving your child life experiences is not being a good parent? So if your child is on Honor Roll and you want to take them somewhere during the school year " YOU ARE A BAD PARENT"! WOW!
ReplyDeleteNot at all. Policy says nothing about denying vacations. Just complete the procedures outlined and you will be fine. Snowflakes always want to criticize. Just follow the rules.
DeleteWhile we are talking about the schools can anyone tell me why a Sheriffs Office supervisor who has a K-9 is assigned to Pittsville school? This seems to me to be a total waist of resources. Who is he supervising? Himself? What's the K-9 doing all day? I love the fact the school has a cop assigned there but this pick seems to me to be a TOTAL waist of resources and money. Love any info on this??????
ReplyDeleteFor those parents who want to take vacations during the school year, how about we have year-round school and then you would have multiple 3 week breaks scattered throughout the year to go on trips.
ReplyDeleteI like that idea!
DeleteIt's rare anymore that people share good things. So I would like to share this....
ReplyDeleteIf any of you get the opportunity to follow Tonya Lewis who is the newest person on the elected Wicomico County School Board please do. This lady is so passionate about our children's safety. Mrs Lewis is doing wonderful things and providing really great oversight. So as one of the tax payers I just want to say "THANK YOU"!
