Members of the city council for a Minneapolis suburb have voted to stop reciting the Pledge of Allegiance before council meetings, citing an effort to "create a more welcoming environment." CBS Minnesota reports the St. Louis Park city council voted unanimously to make the change that will take effect on July 15.
"In order to create a more welcoming environment to a diverse community, we are going to forgo saying the Pledge of Allegiance before every meeting," said Council Member Tim Brausen. At the meeting, Brausen said members might recite it in the future if there's an appropriate opportunity, like if Boy Scouts are there.
David Gohman has made his home in St. Louis Park for nearly 30 years. The American flags that adorn his garden aren't just decorations.

ReplyDeleteDC needs to make it excruciatingly difficult for this suburb to get dollar one from the federal treasury.
This is so easy.
ReplyDeleteCompelled, forced speech, is not free speech. It is not freedom, it is not liberty.
Countries that compel speech or pledges or behaviors are generally ones we categorize as "enemy".
To say in one breath that we believe in freedom, then with the other say other people should be forced or compelled to do something is a really special brand of cognitive dissonance.
I refuse to say the pledge, mostly because a nation where there is "liberty and justice for all", I would not be compelled to claim this nation is "under" a deity that has never been demonstrated to exist.
Additionally, I would pledge to defend liberty or freedom, but not a piece of cloth. It's absurd to pledge allegiance to a piece of cloth. To argue it "represents" those things is an unnecessary step.
It's important to point out that being convinced to pledge the flag instead of what is supposed to represent allows those with power to skew the meaning, and get you rallied behind whatever their intention is... even when it is opposing freedom or liberty.
I will not be fooled by this false patriotism or nationalism.
What freedom means, what liberty means is that I cannot be compelled to speak, or to pledge to what I don't agree with, or what is unnecessary to pledge to.
How do they get from the Southern border to Minnesota?
