Governor Hogan Urges Federal Treasury to Release Tubman $20 Bill in 2020

Governor Hogan Urges Federal Treasury to Release Tubman $20 Bill in 2020
Pens Letter to Secretary Mnuchin to Reconsider Extended Timeline

ANNAPOLIS, MD—Governor Larry Hogan today sent a letter to U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, urging the federal administration to reconsider its decision to delay the release of the Harriet Tubman twenty-dollar bill. The governor cited concerns that, while the release was originally slated for 2020, “citizens across Maryland and the country will instead have to wait nearly a decade for this new bill to reach general circulation.”

“Dorchester County, Maryland is incredibly proud to be a steward of Harriet Tubman’s lasting legacy, but her influence reaches far beyond the borders of our great state,” wrote Governor Hogan. “I hope that your department will reconsider its decision and instead join our efforts to promptly memorialize Tubman’s life and many achievements.”

Tubman overcame abuse, war, chronic illness, and extreme injustice to make her mark on American history as a suffragette, an abolitionist, and a Civil War veteran. People from across the nation and around the world have shown great interest in preserving and promoting her story. The Harriet Tubman Underground Railroad State Park and Visitors Center in Church Creek, which Governor Hogan marked the grand opening of in 2017, receives hundreds of thousands of visitors each year from all 50 states and over 60 countries.

“She dedicated her life in selfless service to others and to the cause of freedom,” the governor said. “Her unbelievable acts of heroism, courage, and sacrifice have more than earned her rightful place among our nation’s most pivotal leaders. She deserves this honor.”

  4. The underground railroad park?? Well her examples have definitely been taken to heart by today's black youth and our newfound illegal immigrant members. If we can't abide by the laws we'll just break them and make our own!!

  5. Maybe the Governor should worry about more pressing problems facing the citizens of Maryland. Personally I don't think I will carry around one of these bills.

  8. You would think hogan had more inportant issues like the cespool that is baltimore or salisbury or i dont know like makinh maryland a bit more gun friendly. Ad it stands right now maryland doesnt recognize any other states conceal carry permits. Making it so the person has to apply to maryland and give them money for permits. Which by the way if youre denied, Maryland thanks you for that money because you dont get it back. You would think with the crime rate the way it is in the big city that they would encourage its residents to protect themselves. Get this througb your head maryland "Shall not be infringed upon" it means you dont get to say what, where and when we carry our means of self preservation in the troubling times we live in.

  13. Hogan you want to talk history, then what about the tributes to the Confederacy? That is also a major part of Maryland history you are destroying. Maryland was a Southern State. If the Confederate Monuments and other memorabilia has be removed because of people has their opinions are insulting to them, which are WHITE, then the same thing can be said about a Tubman $20 bill. Personally I admire Harriet Tubman and her courage. Politians should quit being discriminatory for political purposes.

    1. Guess you miss the point. Tubman fought to free slaves and sacrificed for the very principles of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. Had Conf won they would have kept folks in chains. Has this not yet sinked in with you folks yet that this is exactly why people choose not to honor the confederacy?

  18. The notion of Tubman on the $20 has its roots in the previous administration. Fairly transparent reasons.

Most, but not all, of our currency has had founders of the republic or ex-Presidents on it. So consciously putting a woman on a bill again falls short of either criteria. What Tubman did was courageous but IMHO doesn't 'match up' with what existing faces on the currency did. She has been celebrated in a number of ways already.

There is no good reason to remove Andrew Jackson; his public career was long and notable starting as a teen in the Revolution, and keeping him on the $20 is no slap at Tubman.

Funny how the new "race card" is old white men. Old people do a better job so you are such a bigot.

And again, every Moron has to bring up race. Who cares what color they are.

I agree. Faces such as Kurt Schmoke, Martin O'Malley, Sheila Dixon, Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, Catherine Pugh and soon to be Jack Young.

They all have the same thing in common. They are Democrat and black.

  26. This Governor started making my skin crawl after two years in office. He should be lucky that a Creepy, clueless, dumb, part black Progressive ran against him.

Unfortunately, the Republicans were too stupid and lazy to find a real Republican to run both times. Republican club and Central Committee members tasked with finding good Republican Candidates are only concerned that they have an R beside their name. Who cares if they are RINO's or Democrats who recently switched Parties. Who cares if they have been in the wrong party for years. Who cares if they are plants. Who cares if they are Jack Asses like Alex Scott who is a Progressive with the Democrat Party who switched party affiliation to Republican so that he can try to get a free appointment to fill Marc Kilmer's seat. Yes, he did!

  28. If its not a dead president or a founding father, no one should have their likeness on our paper money, and that includes Tubman. Being black, or a woman, or an outlaw, doesn't entitle one's likeness to festoon our money. Tubman had nothing to do with the founding of our country, or leading it. Our money is symbolic. It doesn't represent Tubman or her accomplishments. It represents our COUNTRY.

  29. You must miss the point also. People choose not to honor the Confederacy, because they kept people in chains? Then why do people like you choose to be a democrat, when they did the exact same thing and did not want slavery to end? You're against the Confederacy but not democrats? Has that not sinked in with you??? Huh? Plus it was WHITES that ended slavery. Where are the coins, paper money, statues, etc. honoring them? Plus Tubman did not FIGHT for anything. She did it in hiding. The whites were out in the opening, FIGHTING for the end of slavery. Anything else you want to say?

I guess when you get freebies from them, honor and pride goes out the window, huh? Selling your soul for a free phone, food stamps, cash assistance, etc. They have you right where they want you. Eating out of their hands. They still have control of you. Keep on selling your soul for those freebies and you will never get anywhere.

Hear, Hear! Most of us that are educated know the real history. History that Hogan and the left wing nuts are destroying. As soon at that shooting in Charleston where 9 blacks died Hogan immediately took all Sons of Confederate Veterans license plates away from members of the SCV. That's right, a heritage organization had their plates recalled and no new ones issued.

Then in August of 2017, the night that all of the State Legislature was headed to Ocean City for several days for the Maryland Association of Counties Conference, Hogan had state employees remove the Judge Taney statue from in front of the Maryland State House. That's right, Sneaky RINO Larry paid employees to work after midnight to take the Taney statue down knowing that ALL State Delegates and Senators would be in Ocean City for MACo! Removing the Taney statue even pissed off Democrats like Michael Busch and Mike Miller. One of them was a descendant of Judge Taney.

RINO Larry is constantly dumping money into Baltimore City and Ghetto 'Bury and appeasing the minorities. I don't know about you, but I don't pay taxes to support Baltimore City when our counties have needs also.

Amen! This was all about Obama trying to erase white history and replace it with a criminal outlaw who happened to be a black person.

There is nothing sacred about our American History and Heritage anymore. Everything is turning into a black county. All of the commercials on TV have to have a black person in it. All of the movies have to have a black star in it and sometimes co-starring with a white person. There can be all black movies and movies with a black star but there can't be an all-white movie or one with a white only star. All TV shows and movies that have a police department in it has to have the chief of police being black.

Has anyone else noticed that many of the commercials on TV now have interracial couples? Nothing like forcing that stuff down our throats. And you idiots keep buying their products and watching their shows.
