An Oakland jury awarded a staggering $2 billion-plus in damages Monday to a Bay Area couple who both came down with cancer after spraying Monsanto Co.’s widely used Roundup weed killer on their properties for more than 30 years.
It’s the third such verdict against Monsanto, all in Bay Area lawsuits, and by far the largest judgment against the company.
Alva Pilliod, 76, of Livermore was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2011, and his wife, Alberta Pilliod, 74, was diagnosed in 2015. They had used Roundup to kill weeds on the grounds of three properties they owned in the area, applying it once a week for nine months out of the year. Their lawyer estimated they sprayed 1,500 gallons of the herbicide over three decades.

ReplyDeleteWho'd have thought that spraying poison would eventually make you sick?
ReplyDeleteThere was warnings on Roundup since it was released to Farmers in the late 60's early 70's. You were warned / notified to wear respirators and a white contamination white coveralls. I was on the Farm then and remembered when we had to quit using DDT and use 4 other insecticides including Roundup. I would like to see the evidence that Roundup was the reason they got cancer and there was no other contributing factor.
ReplyDeleteI guess the WHO is just a bunch of blubbering idiots 9:14? Get your head out of the sand. Does anyone not have any issue with having to wear hazmat suits to work with chemical sprayed on the food you eat?
ReplyDeleteI've been using Roundup for over 50 years. It is obvious to any intelligent person that Roundup, a poison, is harmful to any living creature. Therefore, when using Roundup, wear a respirator, rubber gloves, long sleeve shirts and trousers, and only apply on windless periods. After applying, remove clothing and wash at a laundromat

ReplyDeleteThe WHO has an agenda just like the IPCC. They do not use science, they use scare tactics and junk science. Wake up!
I use it around my yard and driveway. I've been using it for years.
ReplyDeleteIf you follow the instructions and use it only for what it is intended for, it is a very safe and effective way to kill weeds and vegetation in areas you don't want to grow. I still use it and will continue to use it.
I've tried Vinegar and salt mixture, it works fine, but it is only effective for a few weeks then the weeds come back. Until they find a better product, I will continue using roundup.
Same here 10:50
DeleteHave you ever thought just once no matter how hard you try you're fighting a losing battle?? I've found a weed eater does just fine or better yet get off your lazy ASSES and try pulling some weeds. The combination of the two will get the same results
