Democratic New York Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez attempted to rewrite history in real time during her Friday night MSNBC town hall event with host Chris Hayes.
As the freshman Democrat waxed on about the time in history when her party was at its strongest — during the Great Depression leading up to World War II — she claimed that the 22nd Amendment was ratified in order to prevent President Franklin Delano Roosevelt from running again.
(Reminder, FDR died in office in 1945; the 22nd Amendment came in 1947)

ReplyDeleteKeep in mind FDR WAS on his fourth term in office when he died. He IS the reason for the 22nd amendment. It wasn't passed to keep FDR from running again, it was to keep all presidents after him from getting elected for more than 2 terms in office.

ReplyDeleteFDR, after being elected, and re-elected 3 more times, was enough for Congress to say enough's enough. FDR is the reason for the 22nd amendment. If he hadn't died in office, he would have served at least 16 years, and maybe more. That was back in the day that Congress saw a problem with the presidency, and Congress and the American people agreed that it needed to be fixed, moving forward. FDR is definitely the reason for the 22nd amendment, even thought it couldn't apply to him. He was dead! She was only wrong in that she said it was to keep FDR from running again. Rather she would have been more correct to say it was to keep anyone from serving as president more than two times, like FDR did. The 22nd amendment was ALL ABOUT FDR.
