Serena Williams Fined $17,000 For 3 Code Violations In U.S. Open Final

Naomi Osaka claimed her first Grand Slam title on Saturday after defeating Serena Williams 6-2, 6-4, in the final of the U.S. Open. With the victory, Osaka became the first Japanese woman to win a Grand Slam singles title.

Williams was looking to win her 24th Grand Slam singles title, which would have tied her with Australia's Margaret Court for the all-time record. Williams lost after receiving multiple penalties from Chair Umpire Carlos Ramos — including a point penalty for breaking her racket, and then a game penalty for arguing with Ramos and calling him a "thief."

The game penalty came as a culmination of an on-going argument between Williams and Ramos. Earlier in the match, Ramos handed down a warning for coaching following hand gestures from Williams' coach Patrick Mouratoglou.

Williams responded by telling Ramos: "If he gives me a thumbs up, he's telling me to come on. We don't have any code and I know you don't know that, and I understand why you may have thought that was coaching, but I'm telling you it's not. I don't cheat to win. I'd rather lose."

  3. Was the audience booing Serena or Osaki?

  4. 10:01 they were booing the ref. They are constantly harrasing her. She has brought so much to tennis and all they want to do is make it hard for her. She gets drug tested 2 or 3 times as often as any other player, they harrass her for her outfits. Tennis has treated it's star player horribly.

    1. So are you saying her breaking her tennis racquet should be allowed because she is a star player? If you really watched tennis and knew all the rules technically any player who breaks a racquet on the court is eligible to be fined. That’s not including those that are being coached across the court. She got caught clear as day. She just lost a point and it made her lose her edge in gameplay. Great tennis players don’t show emotion until the very end. Emotion in tennis shows weakness.

  7. who cares? and what does being a mom have to do with cheating? I guess cause you have a child you are incapable of cheating?
    typical nonsense!

  8. Had she shut her mouth after the first time she thanked the chair umpire after their conversation, it would not have escalated, but she couldn't keep her mouth shut and she was getting her a$$ whooped. She has done this in the past at the US Open, so this is common of her and by her.

  9. They were booing the ref, but he was enforcing the coaching rule. Sure, it may be the stupidest rule in sports, but it's the rule, and her coach admitted he was "100% coaching". If you don't want to play under the Rule, fight to change the rule off the court or don't sign up to play.

When you sign up to play, you agree to the rules.

  12. 10:00pm, and rightfully so (sexist card). She's already had several male tennis pros (long time vets) come out in support stating the same.

  16. She has been a towering figure in tennis, and has generally been a good role model. She has pushed it from time to time with her attire.

In this case, she was in the wrong all 3 times and made a spectacle of the championship match. The new champion had defeated her previously so playing well against Serena was no fluke.

The Nike ad campaign news had just broken, and apparently she is in another segment of it, so it was a handy moment to gin up some feigned outrage. Very sad to see her fade in this fashion. But the blame lies in her mirror exclusively.

  17. What gets me is everyone saying “they were booing the chair umpire” he had ALREADY been removed from the court prior to the award ceremony so there is NO WAY they were booing him!
