Protesters Destroy 105-Year-Old "Silent Sam" Confederate Statue At UNC-Chapel Hill

Chaos broke out Monday night as a group of around 300 demonstrators gathered at the base of Silent Sam, a Confederate memorial statue on the University of North Carolina Campus.

After covering it in gray banners to turn it into an "alternative monument" which read, in part "For a world without white supremacy," Silent Sam was pulled down just after 9:15 p.m.

Protesters were apparently working behind the covering with ropes to bring the statue down, which happened more than two hours into a rally. It fell with a loud clanging sound, and the crowd erupted in cheers.

After Silent Sam tumbled to the ground, people darted in and out of the crowd through a haze from smoke bombs. Atop the statue someone placed a black cap that said, “Do It Like Durham,” an apparent reference to the toppling of a Confederate statue there a year ago. -News Observer

After the statue had fallen, protesters rushed to the remains to take selfies and stomp on the 105-year-old monument which was erected with donations from the United Daughters of the Confederacy.

  1. They should put Silent Sam back up on his pedestal and hire armed guards 24/7 for protection and then charge the students an extra fee to cover the cost. Let them see the true cost of their ignorance.

  4. They need to start arresting these idiots. Fine if you don't agree with something but destroying property that is NOT yours is unlawful and they need to face a stiff penalty and be kicked out of school.......oh wait the school won't do that....they would lose money if they did that.

  5. Dave T: Nothing to celebrate here folks, as these actions symbolize true stupidity and a low level of intelligence. The Confederacy is as much a part of America as the Union, and deserves equal respect on all occasions. I'm not from the south, but I support giving them the respect they deserve because they are Americans. Remember, the only new news, is the history you don't know. And destroying symbols and reminders of that history, both good or bad, is a mistake. We learn from our past so that we don't create the same mistakes in our future! Wake up you sub beta morons!

    1. Is it? Last time I checked the Union won...

By your logic should we give the kkk respect because they too, are Americans?

    2. So should Germany have left up all the swastikas and nazi party banners after WWII since "destroying symbols and reminders of history is a mistake"?

    3. As a black man I fully understand 2pm's point. Clear steps were taken to reconcile with the confederacy and bring them back into the American fold. To the proceeding commenters poimt, it is quite fullish we would celebrate any person or institution that stood for ideals that were 100% agaist the spirit of the US Constitution or Declaration of Independence.

    5. As a follow-up note, we all need to take a close look back at history; we might see how we are stupidly allowing us to go back down this path again. Think of it:

Slavery was an institution that most whites could not afford to participate in. Only rich whites could. And the system likely hurt poor whites by freezing them out of jobs they otherwise could have been getting paid for. Yet, whites across the confederacy where fooled into fighting and giving their lives up for this system all the while being fed a certain narrative by the powers that be to keep them hating their fellow Americans. Sounds about like what I see going on today on a number of topics.

  7. I have no problem leaving statues in place as long as a declaration of truth is presented along with each. That truth, is that they were criminals committing treason, fighting to enslave human beings. A statue to honor Nat Turner would reflect history...you good with that Dave T?

  9. KKK = 11+11+11=33
It was created by the 33rd degree of Freemasonry as Albert Pike explained a century ago.
The Klan stood for the New World Order.
    Order out of Chaos.
It created the Chaos, so the Brotherhood could provide the Order.

All of the Civil War Generals were Freemasons.
    Everyone of them.

  10. "The Confederacy is as much a part of America as the Union"

This may be the dumbest thing I've ever read on this website.

Each state that seceded expressed, in writing, its desire to no longer be part of the United States of America and took part in an armed insurrection (and indeed, firing the first shot at a US Army installation) to separate themselves from the United States of America.

The CSA forces killed more than a quarter million United States soldiers and citizens, far more than ISIS or al Qaeda to ever hope to achieve. The CSA killed more citizens and soldiers of the United States in one day at Antietam that al Qadea or ISIS have in their entire history.

And why y'all are so emotionally invested in participation trophies for losers of the Civil War that were erected 50+ years after the war is beyond me. In the words of your favorite quote of 2016...

    You lost, get over it.

Actually Abraham Lincoln was the killer and mass murderer of United States soldiers with an illegal and unwarranted invasion of the Confederate States of America. Lucky for him the north won or he would have been hanged in public instead of shot.

  15. Wicomico ANTIFA members James Yamakawa, Jamaad Gould, Seamus Benn, Dan O'Hare, Michele Gregory, John Wright, Jared Schablein, Amber Green, and Jake Burdette were down there with their Black Lives Matters flags and masks on.

It's a fact, my brother is friends with some of them and he told me they were going. They should be investigated and arrested for this crime.
