Senate approves bill to dock lottery winners who got TANF
The Senate passed a bill Monday that would take back money from Virginia Lottery winners if they had received Temporary Assistance for Needy Families benefits in the previous five years.
Senate Bill 192 by Sen. Mark Peake, R-Lynchburg, says that for lottery prizes of $25,000 or more, the state will be credited the amount of any cash benefit the winner received from TANF.
Sen. Bill Stanley, R-Franklin County, said that after taxes, that would essentially strip a winner of all earnings — and thus send them back on welfare.
“Come on man, are we really doing this?” Stanley said. “This is not a partisan issue. This is about taking care of poor people who get lucky!”

Five years? Not fair! Current year? Go for it!`
ReplyDeleteI see both sides. If they are getting any type of welfare benefits they should not be buying lottery tickets.
ReplyDeleteFive years is fine with me if its a big one. Maybe it can be a percentage based scale that increases with the amount of money won. Lets not take the winnings and throw them back on welfare - but that is how the state people think.
ReplyDeleteIt is fair. They are using taxpayers money to pay for the lotto ticket.
ReplyDeleteHeck, why not go back to the moment they reached the age of majority if they were collecting benefits then?

I know, go back further, right?
If I win the lottery, I would simply cash out and move out of Virginia. It was MY gamble, and it was MY win. Virginia offered the game and its rules.
ReplyDelete@8:26, And if you are getting any assistance at all, you will pay it back. Me, I would take every single dollar you won because you gambled with tax payers money. You don't do that. We do not pay taxes so people sitting on their azz, can gamble with OUR money. Besides, you would not be able to cash out and run with all the money. You will not get a check till you are investigated for possibly owning money to any city, county, state or federal government.
