A controversial measure requiring Maryland employers to provide sick days for their workers will become law.
State senators voted 30 to 17 on Friday to override Republican Gov. Larry Hogan's veto of the Maryland Healthy Working Families Act, which the majority-Democrat General Assembly first passed last year.
The law requires businesses with 15 or more employees to offer up to five days of paid sick leave, while employers with fewer than 15 workers will need to provide five unpaid sick days. It was a top priority for Democrats, who scheduled the override votes to be among the first actions of the 2018 legislative session, which kicked off Wednesday.
The Senate vote came on the heels of the House of Delegates' decision Thursday to overturn Hogan's veto by an overwhelming 88 to 52 vote.

ReplyDeleteWhen I was running a small business in Md sick days were something you earned...after a year you got one day...after five years you got five days. That's on top of five paid holidays and paid vacations...two weeks after five years. And a yearly performance bonus at Christmastime. My employees were very happy with the deal and I didn't need the government to tell me how to take care of my people. They were the lifeblood of the business. Too bad all the work dried up and had to close up shop...there are a lot of good businesses out there I hope can deal with the reporting requirements for something they already do.

ReplyDeleteI work at a place that gives sick leave. Many abuse it. This is a bad idea.
ReplyDeleteAnother perfectly good reason to pack up one's business and take it to another state.
ReplyDeleteIf they are "earned" sick days, then the employees should work the first 5 days of each year for no check, as that money would be doled out on the sick days used each year.
When both employers and employees get tired of grovelling to State regulations, they will both leave the state.

Many of those businesses aren't even paying for holidays or vacations. They just can't afford it and the employers are lucky to have a job.
The way I see it, if you don't like that job try to find one that you like better.

ReplyDeleteSeasonal don't get sick time because "seasonal" special exemptions. Most of the Russians don't come back to work after two weeks anyway. full time only
Delete"Russians" (as you say - MANY other countries are represented) are not considered seasonal. The visa allows for five months of work.
DeleteAlso: Full time is a moot point. They will happily work 50-60 hours a week, unlike their snowflake American counterparts.

This is SO serious a matter in OC that I bet the ruling will not even show up with reporting in the local papers. Once the visiting European students/workers catch on to it, it'll create chaos at many local establishments.

ReplyDelete6:09 I know it's kind of silly for me to defend the policies of a business that no longer exists thanks to the Obama economy but yes, I felt that after 5 years of employment getting 20 paid days off a year was a pretty golden deal. How many paid days off do you get?? Maybe Joe or somebody should do a survey to see what people currently get versus what they will get with this new law. Most decent employers already have paid sick days. Nobody ever forced anyone to work for someone who didn't offer paid sick days.
