A Viewer Writes: Bike Lanes On RT. 50

Joe,

Was riding down RT.50 east last night, and noticed new bike lanes along the area that the new fence was added to keep kids from crossing the highway. So now the bikers are going to be riding out closer to traffic and the motorists are going to be trying to turn in the same space. I don't see much of a problem there, NOT! Don't know the ruling about bikes on highways, but it seems to me to be asking for trouble by enabling the bikers to ride down the highway.

There are roads in need of repair and yet $$ is spent on bike lanes on highways and fences that will not stop people from crossing the highway. I'm guessing these decisions are coming from the mayor's office? Does anybody in these departments use any common sense in making these decisions?

  2. Bike lanes are going up everywhere!

I think the governments are getting ready for the time when most of us will be riding on bikes, and few of us riding in cars?

  3. I notice this too and was going to send a photo to Joe. Thanks for bringing it up.

When I saw it I wondered, when did it become legal for bicycles to be on state highways.

This is the most screwed up design because the bike lane is in between the turning lane and the travel lane.

I did not go the distance so I am not sure if this ends at Civic or Mt Hermon on 50.

Most idiotic thing I have seen

  4. I might chime in tell you the fence hasn't made much of a difference , many groups of students gather and walk where they want to , not at the crosswalks.
They walk around the fence and down the medium , then cross anywhere .That's a fact Jack!

Many have NO_ROOM for them & is Irresponsible of Govt !!!

NO Room for lanes on MANY / Some roads Have NO Shoulder !

    ALL 50 states >>>> FEDERAL LAW !!!!!

  7. 13 & 50 are designated Federal Highways since they extend through more than 1 State. When was a law passed to allow Bicycles to be ridden on Federal Highways? If they can then why are they prohibited on the by-pass & Rt1 in Delaware? Who has the right of way where the bike lanes cross the turn lane since the Bicycles are crossing a traveled lane?

  8. To get federal funding for road projects, you have designate a portion of each highway as a bike lane. All a part of agenda 21 to put more people into cities.

  11. The bike lane is the same on Northbound 13 between Batman and College. The high dollar fence on 50 has had citizens jumping over it since construction began and still doing so today.

  13. 10:50 AM I get what you are saying but jumping the fence and walking in the narrow median responsibility falls on the stupid public.

Hope these parents don't come crying when one of their juvenile delinquents get killed.

Where are the cops to monitor this new arrangement and ticket these idiots for jay walking. Did they really think that throwing up a fence was going to solve the problem. Until there are consequences nothing is going to change.

  18. If there were 50 people a day riding their bike through that area I could understand the bike lane. I never see a bicycle in that area. A waste of time and money on that entire project. Wait until summer traffic hits the area and cant drive 3 wide.

  21. You guys are just now noticing the idiotic placement of bike lanes?

Riding bikes in traffic put everyone at risk, the bikers and the motor vehicles. The way these bike paths are designed makes it worse. Oh, and now bikes are allowed to use the WHOLE lane? Nothing bad will come from that will it?

  22. Anyone else notice heading West right by the Arby's going under the rt 13 overpass the bike lane just suddenly vanishes as the road narrows. Now you will have to deal with bikes in the same lane as you at the same time watching for high homeless people on the embankments or hanging out on the median.

    Welcome to the bury.

  23. Perhaps the complainer should educate himself on the "rules for bikes on the highways." They have rights to use most highways in Maryland, unless specifically barred from doing so on certain restricted highways. And automobile operators have to give them the right to use the roadway. You are liable for damages and death, if you don't.

  24. Hold up there, little doggy, 1104. Apparently, you're one of those obnoxious bicyclists who feels entitled to HOG the road regardless of traffic demands. Sorry, that simply doesn't wash. Bicyclists are also legally culpable for their own negligence. If they contribute to an accident, they are just as much to blame as a motorist. Get your head out of your granola and think! If you're going to come on here touting the legality you'd better know the laws and how the legal system works.

  25. If they do not display tags they have no right on the highways.

  30. Was this another one of Flakey Jake's ideas. I drive that part of RT 50 daily. In just the first week I've seen 4 near misses. The next one won't be a near miss. It will be a fatality.
