More Expensive National Parks May Threaten Access to Nature

The proposed entrance fee increase could price out minority and low-income Americans, experts warn.

Under a new proposal from the National Park Service, 17 of the most popular U.S. national parks could see entrance fees for weeklong passes increase from around $25 to $30 to $70 for a single private vehicle.

Fees would also increase to $50 per motorcycle and $30 per person on bike or foot. The near doubling in park fees is expected to generate an additional $70 million annually, which the NPS says would pay for the parks' neglected infrastructure.

Fee increases would go into effect during the five-month season that parks are most visited. The exact duration of these peak seasons vary by park but generally begin in late spring.

    1. 3:18- you've obviously never been to a national park. Ignorant comment, I should add.

  2. I'm pretty sure that is the PURPOSE of higher fees.
    Geez, I'm so smart.

  3. 3:18 I just got home from a week of hiking in Shenandoah. The entrance fee is now $25, up from $15 just 2 years ago. When I emerged from 6 days of back woods hiking and set up camp at Matthews Arm, the Campground host informed me of the petition against the $50 entrance hike. What cost $45 two years ago, entrance fee and 2 days of campground costs, will cost $100 next year. These are the few areas a struggling family can still afford to have a wholesome vacation at, without spending a small fortune.

(map), you have no clue what these areas are like if you think stepping outside is the same experience. I sat on the ledge of a waterfall. I saw 3 bears, stood within feet of several deer that passed through my site feeding on acorns, saw chipmunks and squirrels competing for those same acorns.

I LOVE the outdoors, (map) you just don't get it, apparently. Try culturing yourself a little, check them out, and learn that your snarky attitude just shows your ignorance. There are several national parks within 5 hours of Salisbury, but I'd rather you keep hollering at kids to stay off your lawn. You seem to just have a bad attitude or a false sense of superiority, if you honestly stand by your comment.

  4. National Parks have very little info-structure and rightly SO, and its certainly not failing...obama closed and cut their funding some. So...the tax us then take our money and buy land and now dbl and triple down on entrance fees...this is government getting into the tourist business, nothing more...I'll boycott their a$$'s too.

  5. 4:55 Your comment is irrelevant and has nothing to do with the impact on the common people. It doesn't matter if you use all CAPS, you've not made any point, what so ever.

SMART? I'm just not seeing it. Sorry. Maybe, humble yourself a little, because you are totally ignorant on this issue.

  6. You guys are wrong about me. I have been there and done that many times. But I feel I don't have to pay to go see nature. If you want go for it then go. If you have the money to pay to see trees, land and leaves good for you. But don't bi-ch about the price. Just pay for it and enjoy. My ignorance is far less then you. I have squirrels, rabbits and birds in my yard that I feed. My (snarky) attitude and I am not superiority to any one as you seem to think that you are. My problem is dealing with people like you that seem to think that they need a park to see how wonderful our country is and bash me for how I feel. I on the other hand would or not do that to you. So keep coming after me that's ok I can take it and hope you can deal my views as I do yours. But I bet you can't by your comments. My culture is just fine thank you for worrying about me. do stand by my comments(5:02(map)

    1. 5:02- map. No, we are not wrong about you. Each comment you make shows how ignorant you are, even further. BTW, no one is worried or cares about you, there's that superiority complex I was referring to. You really don't get it and it shows, but that's fine. I'd rather idiots stay out of the parks.

  10. 10:18 Your concern for me is irrelevant. It once again appears you think your ignorant opinion means a grain of salt to anyone. That's the superiority complex I referred to earlier. Time for GPS. Your map appears old and and useless. Your idiocy is truly astounding, and is not worth any more of my time. You can't argue with crazy.

  11. 12:28, I agree my opinion is mine and maybe my superiority complex comes from dealing with people like you. I could not care less about you and I will keep expressing my opinions when I want and you or anyone else will not change that. So enjoy your sad little life. Bye I'm also done with you. Now go away.
