What time you eat causes you to pile on the pounds

The time of day you eat not how many calories you consume is key to losing weight, according to new research.

The findings suggest even your best efforts to cut back may prove ineffective if you're not timing your meals correctly.

A recent study found that mice given a reduced calorie diet who ate only during the day lost weight.

But rodents who had their food at night did not reap the same results – despite consuming the same amount of calories.

Lead author of the study Dr Joseph Takahashi said: 'Translated into human behaviour, these studies suggest that dieting will only be effective if calories are consumed during the daytime when we are awake and active.

'They further suggest that eating at the wrong time at night will not lead to weight loss even when dieting.'

  1. I took my doctors advice and stopped eating anything after 7:00 pm.

My weight is decreasing, albeit slowly, but going in the right direction.

I eat a big breakfast, no lunch, nice dinner and no snacks at night.

Trust me, it's hard not to go get a bowl of cornflakes at 9:00 while watching tv.

  2. Stop watching tv and exercise your brain instead of numbing it.

  3. A few years ago some family members gave up snacking after dinner for Lent. They still ate the same amounts during the day and even snacks throughout the day. They didn't really deprive themselves of anything except eating after dinner. They lost quite a bit of weight. One had a belly going that went away.
