Restaurant owner says dozens of workers gone after request from DHS

CANTON, Md. (WBFF) -- Customers of the BoatHouse in Canton were greeted with an unfamiliar sign Saturday.

The restaurant posted copies of a letter at its entrance and on social media.

The letter was written by the owner and explains the restaurant unexpectedly lost more than 30 employees, he says after the Department of Homeland Security requested employment files in order to review I-9 immigration documentation.

The letter read in part, “… properly documented and potentially less than properly documented are all fearful of being separated from their families, many with small children. Many went home to pack up and leave. This was a sad, emotional and tragic event.”

Though I'm sure many of them are good people, if they are here illegally they need to get the message that it won't be tolerated anymore (and apparently they have.)

It's very hard to say whether the 'properly-documented' ones actually had VALID documents or fake/stolen ones.

And here's an interesting question-- how is it that this restaurant's staff had so FEW citizens and so MANY immigrants?

And how many restaurants in Maryland are doing the exact same thing? (I can certainly think of some in Salisbury, can't you?)

  3. The owner knew darn well that they were illegals. There's a new Sheriff in town and his name is not Midget Mike.

  4. If you're legal, don't worry about it. Illegal, go home.

  5. No arrest the person that hired them and make them do 90 days, no work release.

  7. BWAHAHAHAHA!! What?? You say now there are no employees to work at the restaurant? I have an excellent idea. Why not put that minorities who have been collecting welfare, food stamps, EBT Cards, Medicaid and housing vouchers to work!!

Think about the millions of dollars this state would have to balance the budget.

Think about the millions of dollars this state would have by saving on those fraudulent entitlements stolen.

Think about how much the crime rate would go down if these idle minds on welfare were occupied by working.

Arrest the restaurant owner for hiring illegal aliens and that would put a stop to that sh!t!!

    1. Read the article, moron. Their papers were in compliance. Owner did nothing wrong.

  8. There are plenty of businesses which take great pains to comply with the burdensome I-9 requirements. They let prospective employees know up front they have to be legal and prove it. Good for them, and no sympathy for those who don't and get caught.

  9. Had they not been here illegally in the first place, this wouldn't be "a sad, emotional and tragic event."

  10. If you would have been TRUTHFUL to begin with, you wouldn't have this issue. GREED got the better of you, now you have a big MESS!

    Not sorry for you!

  13. Put the owner in jail, and lock him away for 90 days to 6 months. Time to do this, if there are no one breaking the law hiring illegals, they will quit coming into the country! Jobs for Americans only! Screw the Illegals! America first, screw the rest of the world.

  15. 12:08 PM His paperwork can be in order but that does not mean he did not hire illegals. All you need is a social security card (which can be bogus) and a drivers license to complete the form.

All illegals have SS cards. They are bogus, but they have them. And doing payroll in-house makes it easy to skirt the issue.

Most likely after filing his payroll taxes, he received a bunch of "do not match" letters, tipping the feds off to the fact that they were all illegals.

Maybe you should do some research before you spout off at others.

Happens every day here in the bury. I worked for 2 employers who had illegals and he knew it.

  16. Now the Boathouse can hire some Americans, not pay them cash under the table, pay the payroll taxes and wages for employees as directed under the law!!!

  17. Good, finally uphold the law! They should audit Delmar Pizza if you remember they had a lot of no shows on the immigration protest day. They have non-documented workers. I won't utilize any business that hires undocumented workers.

  18. This is Bullsh*t. Pity me I am victim. If your employees were legal you would be open right now. Frankly your butt should be in prison for hiring them and not following through with social security checks.
