No smoking ... and this time we mean it

Now that the Boardwalk smoking ban is in its second year, Ocean City Police have issued more tickets in the first weeks of summer.

Altogether, 52 citations were issued to smokers on the boards as of June 30, according to Police Public Affairs Specialist Lindsay Richard.

“Officers are taking a stricter enforcement approach rather than focusing on education,” Richard said. “Signage has continued to improve each year and we feel as if our residents and visitors should be aware of the ordinance by now.”

The smoking ban was imposed by the City Council in May 2015 as a health initiative and a way to keep the Boardwalk air clean and the beaches free from cigarette butts. The ban also applies to cigars, pipes, e-cigarettes and other substances that contain tobacco.

  2. This smoking ban is the reason I stopped going to OC. It's a principle thing because I don't smoke. They discriminate. Who wants to give their cash to any group that infringes on some group's freedoms as long as they're law abiding. Never heard of smoking killing a family instantly but heard of plenty of alcohol related situations that have. Better to go to VA Beach or the Carolinas. OC is a slum anyway. Why bother.

  3. And yet OC runs trams up and down the boardwalk, night and day, spewing exhaust fumes into the crowds. I'd rather smell cigarette smoke, not that I can in the open air of an oceanfront boardwalk or beach. OC government sucks, always has, always will. The people that run that town are what makes ME sick, not tourist's cigarette habits.

  4. For smokers it pisses you off. For non-smokers I say it's about time! Smokers are ill mannered and don't care if they offend anybody with their nasty habit. I applaud OC for doing this, and you stinky ridiculous habit controlled smokers to damn bad. I hope you quit smoking.

    1. All smokers are ill mannered? I do not smoke but that comment is a little harsh.

  5. Actually, the signage is not obvious.
I was there last weekend and a store clerk we befriended came out for a smoke and showed us were "the spot" was. Which was in the sand 50-100 feet from the boardwalk. Absolutely ridiculous.

  6. 1010 cheap women and men's cologne makes me physically sick, has since I was a kid. I'm not alone. I know a lot of people are physically repulsed when people lay on the heavy perfume. The same goes for people who refuse to have good hygiene and their bad body odor.

So by your comment, should they start banning anyone from wearing perfume and cologne in public and demand citizens to take a daily shower?

Welcome Big Brother! We salute you, comrade.

  7. As long as you step off the boardwalk you can smoke..not a big deal unless your too lazy to walk to a exit ramp on the boardwalk. My stupid son took up smoking, from a family of non smokers, and he gets mad about it. I say if you didn't start smoking you wouldn't have to walk to the ramp. Smoking is a habit people should just give up!

  8. Not everyone is perfect like you 1019. Nice to know some people's sh** doesn't stink. I guess its hard for you to tolerate the little people.

  9. Smokers should be restricted to West of the route 50 bridge. There's a bus available to them to go back and forth.

  10. 1033 why don't you just suggest that smokers be banned from coming to OC altogether. They're dregs of society. A public nuance. Why have them there at all? They're just losers, right?

  11. So much for living in a free country when people think they can dictate to others what they can and can't do when it doesn't break laws. The people commenting here are a bunch of self-righteous pompous asses. Full of themselves.

  12. Maybe we should make OC a members-only resort where you can't come unless you're of a certain class.

  13. Oh yeah, right...smoking is the problem. If you want to smoke on the boardwalk, do it after ten at night. The police are not allowed to be there; it might upset the thugs.

  14. Too funny,,,I can buy cigarettes on the board walk but not light on up.....so the local government still likes me to pay the tariff..

  15. Smoking on the bayside - no problem! Park the boats on the bayside inlet across Westside OC marinas next to Assateague, walk over the dune - no problem! Beaches, heck 70th street up to the Del line, don't be a jerk and smoking is no problem! Big brother doesn't bother me EXCEPT on the boardwalk.

Well, stay away from the boardwalk while smoking and all is well! City FAIL at its worse with tiny time laws!

  16. 10:10. Your comment is ridiculous. I don't smoke and walking past someone who smokes is not a big deal. People love to complain.

  19. 1040 you make a funny there, but don't think this discussion hasn't been brought up a time or two during recent times!!!

Better yet the discussion included how do we out price a certain "class". You know we do have the highest AVERAGE hotel room cost from Del to SC.

    Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.......................

  21. I am an OC local and a smoker. I NEVER smoke in a vehicle with non-smoking, near an establishment entrance, NEVER throw a cigarette butt on the ground ANYWHERE! I guess my first question is, if you only have to walk a few steps to smoke legally, why don't u, without complaining? Secondly, if my money is green enough to buy cigarettes on the boardwalk, then why can't I smoke them? This appears to be yet another money scheme for OC. And frankly, those who litter their butts and are inconsiderate of others have caused all this turmoil!

  22. My problem is, no smoking in doors, which came years ago and I was fine with that. But now I cant smoke outside??!

  23. 509 People don't realize how much they put smokers out because they're selfish individuals. They think of smokers as sub-citizens even though they'll go drink like a fish at a club and then get in their cars and endanger everyone's lives going home. Think nothing of it. But God forbid anyone light up a cigarette but if you smoke pot, that's cool, too. 528 non-smokers are hysterical. They think they have some moral high road when they look like pompous morons. They don't seem to realize every time a plane takes off, over 8 billion cigarettes worth of carbon monoxide pollutes a mile radius around the take off site, but you don't see them giving up their vacations that require airplanes.

Oh, horse hockey. Those are just convenient excuses for others to throw out to disguise what they are really after, dominion and control over others. And when you say NEVER, I find that very hard to believe.

Nobody should be forced to be around smokers if they don't want to be. But at the same time, their rights do not supersede mine or anyone else's.

I can walk a few feet to distance myself from non-smokers and I can rip off a filter and throw it into a waste basket. Non-smokers can and should make similar adjustments to avoid what they don't like and not put it entirely upon the smokers' shoulder.

Grow up and take some responsibility for your own well-being, but not at the expense of someone else's rights. Whatever happened to cooperation and compromises?

As much as some may think so, smokers are NOT second class citizens. Stop treating them as such.
