Maryland Divided Part 5: Can Salisbury and small enclaves make rural Maryland cool?

By J.F. Meils
Capital News Service

SALISBURY— Salisbury Mayor Jake Day, 34, has a floor-to-ceiling erasable board dotted with Post-it notes on the longest wall of his office.

It’s a jarring display of terrestrial organization for a millennial, but Day is hardly old school. He’s got two masters degrees, one from Carnegie Mellon in urban design and the other from Oxford in environmental policy. He is also an officer in the Maryland National Guard and a local boy whose father was recently named COO of Perdue Farms.

“There were moments when, as a 9-year-old living in Salisbury, I was thinking I really want to be mayor in this town,” said Day.

So he’s had plenty of time to think about how he’d change things in a city with a history of helter-skelter development and a stubborn crime rate.

  1. I haven't noticed the Mayor and his friends suffering from low self-esteem.

  4. Thank you 12:41. For all of the complaints about the Mayor on this site, I have yet to see any constructive recommendations on how people would do things differently, with more success.

    1. 12:41- I have seen numerous, almost countless recommendations on doing things differently using basic logic. You're thinking of WBOC. You must be one of Day's hired minions.

  5. So reading through the article, something REALLY caught my eye.

"Initial funding for 3rd Fridays the first year was around $20,000. In 2016, it was $280,000."

So there are 12 - 3rd Fridays, meaning it costs them $23,333 PER event. Think about that for a minute. How many people go to these? Is it 1,000? 2,000? Are they the same people each one? What exactly are they spending $23,333 a month on? Are these actual tax dollars or does this money come from a grant?

Seriously is this the best use of $280,000?

  6. What is the average income in Salisbury? Why would someone want to live there? Schools, jobs, and crime rate are terrible.

  8. 12:41 We could start by getting rid of this....'and a local boy'.

Send him back to England, I'm sure he has the solution to the immigrant problems for them and maybe he could get another degree without real world experience

    1. Even more so when a person has had a grudge against the city and its officials, past, present and probably future. Just makes for a miserable life.

Whoa, so with those college degrees Day was able to come up with big expansion of Section 8 housing downtown and removing guard rails along side of the river? What an accomplishment! Oh, while raising taxes on local citizens and using Taxpayers funds for all of the freebie "projects". I guess that's what liberals call the Progress. SMH!

Thank You! If truth be told used toilet paper has more value then his degrees and the proof is in his complete lack of any positive accomplishments.

You aren't serious are you! FYI there have been many many recommendations and suggestions posted on this site. Wake the hell up or don't comment nonsense! Just about everyone on this site told the fool that Headquarters Live was an asinine idea and now TOLD YOU SO-it's closed or closing. The foolish little man made a deal that only made him look more stupid then he is and could be said showed his propensity toward dishonesty and what could be said stealing from the tax payers after Joe offered more money for the property. People has all kinds of ideas like letting a non profit use it but no dopey mayor thinks he knows it all when he knows not much about anything. If you want more examples of suggestions I will post them all day long just to prove you wrong and so I can say TOLD YOU SO too.

  15. In spite of the City's continued attitude towards the college, SU has prospered and now it the one bright spot of the town. Had the "Good Old Boys" embraced the University back when it was just beginning to grow....the city too could have blossomed into something special. But now....other than SU Salisbury has nothing to offer anyone.

  16. This Bozo doesn't have a clue! Trump has already proved that "Real life" experience far out weighs his over emphasized resume. He falls into the same category as Obama. Never had a real job and has no creditability or rational thought or recommendations. He will turn out to be another professional politician looking to build his resume on look at me. What a joke and people fall for idiots like this!

Well, now you are in that position go ahead and be a mayor. You have been there long enough to make a showing, get with it (the job).

  18. The article celebrates the birthrate exceeding the death rate by 50%, but doesn't acknowledge that over half of those births are of children who are born to unwed teens and who will grow up fatherless. Of the males, according to current numbers, a quarter to a third of those will be involved in crimes that will end up in their incarceration or early deaths at the hands of their fatherless peers.

  20. 2:37- It appears obvious that you are 12:41 and 12:56. You have created multiple identities to agree with yourself to influence a point shows you are likely one of Day's paid minions. It is also obvious from anonymous follow up comments, that your false claim has not found a positive audience. Is this why you came back at the end of the day to show support for your earlier comments? No one on the play ground is buying it or even likes you, so now you have created imaginary friends?

If you think your pointless and thoughtless retort carries water, I have read you've already been called on by several people so far. If you don't like this site, just keep logging on to WBOC or CNN. Otherwise, you're just trolling with no clue to what you're talking about. To be honest, I don't have a clue what you are talking about right now. If Joe or Mr Crowe post anything on this site, it is not a baseless claim such as yours. It is always backed up from facts, objective data, and proven methods. Your comments are irreverent or just plain stupid, and just about the exact opposite of their integrity.

  21. Salisbury the poop hole of the shore. Sad to because it was once a great little town to live and raise a family. What is There now? NOTHING but a college. A Over priced college at that. People working there are over paid and to do what? NOTHING but teach liberalism.

Oh how you people HATE the truth. You can't stand it. When all else fails you people cry "hate." It's not hate at all it's reality pal. What's that degree got him-a job in the local slaughter house that in and of itself can be said is one of the main reasons why the boy reigns over The Crotch of the Eastern Shore.
