Detention Facility Death

Wicomico County can confirm that the identity of the Detention Center inmate who died on Saturday is Erland Edward Roessler, III.

Mr. Roessler had been working at the County Roads Department as part of the Poplar Hill pre-release work program and had performed well. For that reason, upon his release, Wicomico County hired him on a probationary basis to continue working at our Roads Division.

Mr. Roessler was arrested Friday, July 28, 2017, and charged with the robbery of the PNC Bank located at 1019 West Isabella Street, Salisbury, Maryland 21801.

His intake into the Detention facility followed standard protocol and he was being held over for a hearing. There was nothing unusual about his intake or his behavior and demeanor.

He was later discovered unresponsive during regular officer rounds. He was transferred to Peninsula Regional Medical Center by ambulance and later pronounced dead. Mr. Roessler had hung himself.

  1. A shame but it's he hanged himself and not hung himself.

I always hated English class in high school. To me it's not all that important if people can understand what you're saying. Others disagree and that's ok with me.

  6. Left to his own devices he could not get by. He had a history of fitting in a group setting where there was someone to keep him in line. It is so sad there was no place for him after pre-release. I may not know the whole story (I don't) but there seems as though there should have been some hope for him.

  7. The job of the detention center was to keep this man alive. They have a history of people dying on them while in custody.

What ever happened to the corrections officers that let the criminal escape on their way to a mental hospital(Perkins)?
    ----
David Watson who was serving time for attempted murder escaped Friday morning while being transported to a psychiatric hospital in Howard County, Maryland. David M. Watson, 28, was in the custody of the Wicomico County Detention Center, and was being taken to the Clifton T. Perkins Hospital Center on Dorsey Run Road in Jessup when he escaped custody.

Authorities say Watson was being brought to the facility for a mental evaluation. At about 9:40 a.m. Friday, when the van carrying Watson and two Wicomico County Detention Center guards pulled into the hospital parking lot, authorities say Watson managed to push the guards aside and flee into the woods near Dorsey Run Road.

It's time for some new leadership at the Detention Center. A real County Executive would have replaced him by now.
