GOP going after Mathias in 2018

Maryland Republicans need to pick up five seats in the State Senate in the 2018 election to disrupt a nearly century-old veto proof Democratic majority in the legislature, and the effort, dubbed the “Drive for Five,” leaves Sen. Jim Mathias in familiar territory: in the center of the bull’s-eye.

Mathias is one of six senators being targeted by the GOP in its quest to pick up the five seats.

“Worcester County has generally been a conservative-leaning area. It is currently represented by a Republican congressman and state delegate, and overall, District 38 voted for Gov. Hogan in 2014 70-30 percent,” Patrick O’Keefe, political director of the Maryland GOP, said.

“We believe Sen. Mathias’ votes on taxes and fee increases, and anti-small business votes such as his vote for the paid sick leave bill are not in line or representative of the views of his constituents.”

Thank God. The people of Worcester,Wicomico, and Somerset have finally seen the light. Anybody from anywhere is a better candidate than he is. Remember WICOMICO the school board issue, HE'S the culprit. Bob Aswell...Tired of the phony faces.

  4. He'd been gone long ago if it weren't for the corrupt voting system in MD.

  5. We will vote for his opponent... maybe Marybeth Carozza?

  7. he needs to go. didn't he vote to make Maryland a sanctuary state? wtf! drain the Maryland swamp. jim is all about himself!

  8. Del Carroza needs to stay put. What the GOP needs to take the seat is a dynamic popular business person. Someone new to politics. Sort of like Donald Trump. Someone not bound by political correctness or indebted to special interest.

  9. Delegate Mathias should be easy to beat here on the eastern shore. He has no one to blame other than himself. Case-in-point he voted for the Residential Sprinkler bill that requires all Marylander's building a new home to have residential fire sprinklers installed.

He also voted to override Governor Hogan's veto of the accelerated RPS (Renewable Portfolio Standards) that raised everyone's electric bills. There is more to come out on this rascal very soon. But IMHO is should be easy to unseat this politician.

  10. I pitch that Jim return "home" and star in the OC marketing commercials and we send RODNEY the lifeguard to Annapolis.

    Couldn't get any worse!

    FOUR days until TGIF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  11. He has the out of State / Dc money that Conway had and kept him in office. Mathias needs to go. His home is on the western shore. OC is his political home where he is as crooked as you can get. Look at the businesses he has underhandedly assisted in and invested in.

  12. As much as I don't like him, the reality is, he is the only guy that will get money for the Shore. If a Republican is there, he is in the minority, and will have no pull in Annapolis. Mathias gets us money because he is a Democrat. Otherwise, nobody in Annapolis cares about the Eastern Shore, and they'd let us rot. At least with Jim, something comes in. Get a Republican in there, and you can kiss any money goodbye.

  13. Please get someone who can actually win and a real Conservative...

  14. His only goal in getting to Annapolis was to line his pocket for the future....set the table for his big feast when he heads home. The ultimate in the "good ole boys" syndrome.

  15. Rode his OC coat tails all the way to the state house. Some say, that at least as a Dem, he can get money for the shore. I guess some say the status quo should never be changed. Maryland will never change unless we change the status quo. More Republicans is LESS Democrats ruining our lives. Enough more Republicans, and the Dems will lose their stranglehold on Maryland politics. The status quo has got to go.

  18. To 2:20 Poster that said; Mathias 'is the only guy to get money for the shore'.

You must be an imbecile - it won't matter if Mathias wins or loses the Senate seat - the eastern shore is still destined to be poverty stricken. We're outnumbered irregardless if Mathias is re-elected or not. The vote count - 132-9 (best case scenario) in the House. That's right starting from the Chesapeake Bay to the Atlantic Ocean - the eastern shore only garners 9 votes out of 143 total. And in the Senate - it's even worse - the eastern shore only garners 3 votes out of 47 so we are outgunned by 43 western shore votes.

Look at how they the Maryland Legislature (enemy) apportioned the Presidential electoral votes. They illegally gave all of them to Hillary. By US constitutional standards Trump should have garnered at least 7 of the 10 electoral votes - and yet he got NOTHING - NADA!

  19. Mathias has also sold out Ocean City to Offshore wind. Tourists will now choose another destination, one that does not have blinking red lights at night.

  20. The real concern should be that Trump does not implode between now and the 2018 elections. If the middle of the road conservatives swing the other way, it will be impossible for MD to gain a majority in the legislature. There is a huge group of voters that vote based on issues and actions rather than blindly following party lines.

  21. 510pm stupid comment. Blinking lights cannot be seen when one sleeps. During the summertime season, sun doesn't set until AFTER 730pm. So you (prob local) know what vacationers think??? You don't know poop. Go to a Tues night meeting and ASK questions.

  22. And just like Norman Conway, Jim Mathias is about to find out what it's like to turn his backs on his fellow eastern shore voters. His voting record is out-of-step with our way of thinking. Soon, I hope the day of reckoning will be upon you.

  23. The 2015 election was very close between McDermott and Mathias. And despite McDermott's traditional district boundaries being carved-up by the O'Malley led gerrymandering, Mathias just barely skated by. As I recall the final tally went to absentee ballots. As many of the above posters have noted, he is very very vulnerable to being unseated.

  25. As many times as I've voted for Jim in the past, it's now time to vote party lines. Enough is enough. Maryland is one of the most liberal states in the country because of a handful of lawyers and left-wing swindlers. It's time to take our country, our state, our counties and towns back from these immoral politicians.

Mary Beth can't beat him. She is just a ho hum, yawn, better candidate than some and won the seat that she has. If she runs and loses to Jim then there is a high probability that a Democrat will win her seat. After all it was held previously by Norman and Jim, both Democrats. Leave well enough alone and find a better candidate.

    Umm, Really???

"Maryland is one of the most liberal states in the country because of a handful of lawyers and left-wing swindlers??"

Umm, Really!!! Maryland is one of the most liberal states because of IDIOTS like you and 9:47 PM for voting for this liberal SCUM. You are truly a POS for voting for any damn Democrat! Stupid MORON!!

  37. McDermott lost to Mathias by a slim margin and yet Mathias outspent him by tens of thousands of dollars. If mcdermott had toned down his message a little Mathias would have been out of work.

  39. 1211 you're absolutely right. We do need changes in Annapolis. It's time we stopped voting out of routine and started looking at legislators' take on issues. This nonsense of voting for people just because they've always been there is exactly what got us idiots like Cardin and McCaskill forever. Term limits should apply to the MDGA as well as Congress. People become to a part of the system and profit from it at the expense of taxpayers.

  40. While OC may consist of over 300.000 property tax payers, Mr. Mathias (and many after him) figured out how to run the town with ONLY 3000 "residents" who can vote and support THEIR agenda. New investors in OC should be well advised to AVOID this mafia town.

    1. You are absolutely correct OC is definitely a mafia run town. By any traditional standard it is full of corruption. I would advise any and all reading these posts to stay out of OC. Otherwise you are traveling at tour own peril.
